POINTS OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN
HOPE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
AND
HOPE KOREAN COMMUNITY
VISION STATEMENT:
God is calling the United Methodist Church to reach out to a multitude of cultures in our communities.  Hope United Methodist Church is already comprised of people from many cultures and countries.  Hope UMC now has an opportunity to reach out to Korean people in North San Diego County.  Our vision:
We envision creating a place where first generation Koreans can worship in their home language,
AND
We are working to create a true unity, a blended, integrated community of faith that more closely reflects the ethnically and culturally diverse population of the North San Diego County communities that our church serves.
We are called to create something new, beyond just a “shared facility” – one people in Christ, loving and appreciating one another.
POINTS OF AGREEMENT:
The three-month trial period (Nov. 6, 2016 – Jan. 29, 2017) is complete.
During these 13 weeks, we have had opportunities to talk, fellowship and eat together.  We have met to develop a MOA, which is a fluid, “living” document, subject to modification as Hope UMC & HKC see fit.
During these 13 weeks, the Korean Communication Team (comprising members of Hope UMC and HKC), has met regularly to assess how things are going and to address any emerging issues.
A special All Church Conference has been called for February 26, 2017 to discuss our relationship with the HKC and to allow members of Hope UMC to affirm that relationship with a vote.
NAME:   The group shall be known as the Hope Korean Community (HKC).
LOCATION/TIME:
HKC will generally meet from 9:30-12:30 on Sundays in CH5-6 and only in CH6 on the occasional weekends that conflict with the existing Hope UMC calendar.
Korean children and youth will attend Hope UMC Sunday School classes, their infants and toddlers will attend the Hope UMC Nursery.
Adults are welcome to attend any adult classes held throughout the week.
Children and youth are welcome and encouraged to attend Hope UMC Nursery/children’s/youth mid-week programs.
HKC will use space on Wednesdays from 9:30-Noon for Bible Study class, except on those Wednesdays in which there is a conflict with the Hope UMC calendar.
The HKC Annual Report and MOA Update will be included in the annual Hope UMC report to the Church/Charge Conference.
SAFE SANCTUARY:
The Hope Korean Community will covenant to abide by the Hope UMC Safe Sanctuary Policies as detailed but not limited to those listed below:
Two adults must be present for any gathering involving minors (or the door kept open to provide a line-of-sight if only one adult is present);
Children (through 5th grade) must be supervised by a designated adult at all times;
FBI background checks for employees;
State background checks for all volunteers working with minors;
Nursery care must be done by Hope UMC paid childcare workers under the supervision of Hope UMC’s Dir. Of Children’s Ministry.
FINANCES:
Financial POCs from Hope UMC will be Nancy Turk (Hope UMC Business Manager), Paige Glaze (Hope UMC Treasurer), and/or David Millar (Chair, Hope UMC Finance Committee); Financial POCs from HKC will be Isguel Lee (Chair, HKC Finance Committee) and Cindy Kim (HKC Treasurer).
HKC will contribute up to $400/month for the custodial costs and utilities, and additional funds as needed to support shared ministries such as Sunday School curriculum/materials, childcare costs, office and kitchen supplies.
Contributions toward longer term financial commitments (such as facility maintenance and improvements) will be discussed and agreed to on a case-by-case basis as the need arises.
There will be no change in Hope UMC apportionment commitments as a result of the relationship with the Hope Korean Community.
Hope Korean Community will provide their own offering envelopes.  Offerings designated for a specific service/ministry will go toward that  service/ministry.  Loose plate offerings will go toward the service in which they are collected.
Specific bookkeeping and accounting practices and details are still to be determined.
SIGNAGE:
Hope UMC’s existing monument signs shall not be modified until the congregation has voted to affirm a permanent relationship with HKC (sometime after the 3-month Trial Period).
At that time, signage representing the Hope Korean Community will be subject to approval by the Hope UMC Church Council Trustees and may be reviewed or revisited as needed in order to have the flexibility to respond to the needs of the Hope Korean Community.
After the vote to affirm a permanent relationship with HKC, the banners in the parking lot may be modified to reflect all worship times at Hope, including the time of the HKC service.
Scriptures and poems of God’s guidance:
From J.Min Kim:
Ephesians 2:18-19 and 21-22.
18 for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God,
21 In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord;
22 in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God.
From Susanne Soans:
A Christmas Prayer from The YMCA of the Rockies
May your body serve God's purpose
It's the house in which you live
Not an option to ignore its care, you see
With exercise, no excess food or drink, this gift to give
May you always be the best that you can be
May your mind be always seeking
For the answer that is there
In the question that God sends us, one by one
To be a true believer requires work and constant care
May you have learned something new when day is done
May your Spirit always lead you
Down the Christian Principles trail
Serving family, friends, all mankind in the way
For your leadership and productive work role model will prevail
May this ministry of God's spirit never stray.
From Kyung Ah Kim:
John 13:34,35
새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another
너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라
"By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
From Carrie Jaquess:
Galatians 3:26-28
"You are all God’s children through faith in Christ Jesus. All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek; there is neither slave nor free; nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
Romans 12:4-5
4For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, 5so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.
