Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Chrostek for Friday, February 10, 2017 from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown in Kansas City, Missouri, United States

Greetings RezDowntowners,
I hope this message finds you doing well. We’ve had a full week at RezDT, but before getting into the fullness of our mission and ministry opportunities I wanted to take a moment simply say, thank you. Thank you for your prayers last weekend as I traveled to Michigan to lead area clergy and lay leaders across the state. I could feel your support and prayers as I shared stories of transformation and change and I hope that God will continue to use us here at Resurrection Downtown to change the world through events like these. It was great to be away at that conference, however, it felt so good to get back to life in Kansas City.
This weekend we’ll conclude our sermon series on living life Unafraid, focusing on our fears of death and dying in addition to the fear of the Lord. This has been such a great series focusing on God’s steadfast love and overwhelming strength. This last weekend will be a great conclusion and we’ll be handing out a great and practical tool to carry with us in the future so that we each might continue to face our fears by the grace of God. Before then, we’ll be hosting our monthly Women’s Breakfast Series tomorrow morning at 9am with Sherry Danner! I am excited to see you in worship and I’m looking forward to sharing news of where we’re heading over the next several weeks as I introduce our next sermon series called, Breaking Ground: reclaiming the foundations of our faith!
In the meantime, here are a variety of ways to connect to the life of this church in the next few weeks.Women’s Breakfast Series – Join us this Saturday, February 11 at 9 am at 1522 McGee as we gather for a time of fun, food and fellowship. We will hear from Sherry Danner, a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist, who is passionate about the empowerment of women to understand their stories and use their unique, God-given voices. This month's topic is Self-Compassion: Calming the Inner Critic. As Christian women, we are frequently kind and encouraging to everyone around us but extremely hard on ourselves. If your "self-care" has become yet another list of things you don't have time to do, maybe it is time for a little self-compassion. Bring a friend, and bring a breakfast dish to share. Or just come and join us – we always have plenty to eat! For more information, contact Pam at pamelacurry@me.com or Bobbie at bobbielcrew@outlook.com.
MATTHEW’S MINISTRY: FAMILY DAY OUT DOWNTOWN! Join us this Sunday, February 12th, at 1:00pm as individuals of all ages with special needs and their siblings enjoy a fun-filled day of crafts, activities and fellowship while parents and caregivers take an afternoon for themselves. Parents/caregivers are welcome, but not required, to stay the first half hour or the full time to help loved ones get acclimated and comfortable with the environment. This is an open event to the community. You do not need to be a member of the church to participate. For more information, to volunteer or to register, contact Hannah.Murray@cor.org.
Theology, Literature and Race 2.0 – This class will continue a conversation, started last summer, exploring issues of race through selected essays, dialogue and most importantly, grace. All are welcome, but please know that discussions are designed to go deep and may at times feel uncomfortable. Our hope is that you will engage in self-reflection, honest conversations and genuine relationships. Starting Tuesday, February 21, at 7 pm, the 3-week study will take place in partnership with Centennial United Methodist Church and will be led by Rev. Dr. Jeff Williams from Centennial UMC and Matt Bisel, Saint Paul School of Theology student. The first session will be held at Centennial UMC located at 1834 Woodland Ave, Kansas City, MO 64108. Please register for this class at cor.org/downtown/getconnected. If you have any questions contact Matt.Bisel@cor.org.
Travel to the Holy Land with Pastor Scott. On November 8-17 Pastor Scott will lead a spiritual journey of a lifetime to the Holy Land. On this pilgrimage you’ll have a chance to retrace the life and walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. You’ll have a chance to visit the cities and sites we read about in the Bible. It is something we recommend everybody experiences if at all possible. For more information visit Connection Point this weekend to pick up an informational brochure before or after worship. For more information please email scott.chrostek@cor.org.
Souper Bowl Food Drive. This is the last weekend to drop off non-perishable items at the church for our Super Bowl Food Drive. Healthy proteins are always in high demand so try to include them in your offering if you can. Our collection will go to support the pantry at Reconciliation Services, one of our FaithWork Partner agencies. They serve lower income and elderly residents on the Eastside of downtown Kansas City.
Volunteer Tax Preparers
. Nextstepkc.org working with MU Extension, AmeriCorps and the local community is helping elderly and lower income residents in our neighborhood file their tax returns. This free service saves them money and could put a little money back in their pockets depending upon their return. There are many opportunities from hospitality, sitting with neighbors doing the paperwork, and auditing the paperwork to satisfy a multitude of volunteer skills and desires. There is training required to work directly with tax documents. If you are interested in connecting in this way, please email pastorpatrick@cor.org and he would be happy to connect with you with more information.
Homework Club at East High School: East High School currently serves 1100 students in grades 9-12 in the Kansas City Public School District. Inside the doors of East you will find over 40 languages spoken by students representing 42 countries! We are looking for volunteers to help out during Homework Club on Tuesdays and Thursday from 2:30 - 4:45 pm. Homework Club is an opportunity for students to raise their grades to improve their GPA, to get caught up in classes so they can graduate, and to help them be academically eligible for life-skill building sports. Volunteers will be subject to required RezDT and KCPS screening and asked to attend a brief orientation meeting at East High School. If you are interested in connecting with the youth in our neighborhood or would like more information, please email Pastor Patrick patrick.mclaughlin@cor.org and East High School teacher and RezDT member Amy Skjordal amyskjordal@gmail.com.
