Volcanic eruption devastates Guatemala
Volcán de Fuego, a volcano located about 25 miles from Guatemala City, erupted 3 June, killing more than 100 people and leaving countless others affected. Nazarenes are responding to the disaster and more help is needed.
Gustavo A. Crocker, chair of the Church of the Nazarene's Board of General Superintendents, and his wife, Rachel, are from Guatemala.
"I want to personally thank the Nazarene family for the outpouring of prayers and support in the aftermath of the volcano eruption this week," he said. "Several of Rachel's relatives and their families live in the proximity of the affected area, but they are all safe and out of danger."
Nazarenes and other local organizations are responding to the tragedy. A group from the church's North Central Field traveled to Escuintla, one of the communities affected by the eruption, to bring emergency medical supplies such as water, food, diapers, and blankets.
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Field Coordinator Dámaris Kellogg and Field Strategy Coordinator Leonel de León were among the North Central Field team members.
Kellogg reports there is no damage to the infrastructure of the Church of the Nazarene in Guatemala, though many members are frightened and were moved to shelters to ensure their safety.
"There are several families that have [had] their loved ones disappear and others [have] their relatives in hospitals," Kellogg said. "There [is] emergency personnel missing, too. We pray for the families affected and for the church that we can see with the eyes of Jesus both physical and spiritual needs. We know that God is in control and that God loves Guatemala!"
The team recently met with CONRED (Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres; National Coordination for Disaster Reduction), SESOP (La Secretaría de Obras Sociales de la Esposa del Presidente; The Secretary of Social Work of the President's Wife), and the Health Department in Guatemala to see how they could serve. They have agreed to work with children twice a day until 9 June and have volunteered at various shelters in the area. The following week they will be working with a team of Nazarene doctors from Mexico who will be adding needed medical professionals.
The team is working with a shelter in Escuintla to communicate with other areas that may be in need.
"We found the people in charge of the shelters and we put ourselves at their disposal to open another shelter if necessary," Kellogg said. "It was a blessing; there were police officers in that shelter and they asked us to please pray with the people and for them."
Local Nazarene churches are also responding to the victims' needs. Pastor Faustino Menéndez initially opened the Escuintla Church of the Nazarene as a shelter for families but later served as an area to store food and other supplies. A Nazarene church in the neighboring area of Coatepeque is working with the church in Escuintla to provide adequate supplies as they continue to treat more patients.
Volunteers from other Guatemala Nazarene districts are also helping. On 6 June, a group from the Atlantic District gathered volunteers and supplies to take to clinics and shelters in Escuintla.
"With the young Nazarenes of the Atlantic District, we managed to gather one van and two trucks and left [Wednesday] at [3 a.m.] towards Escuintla," said Mario Pineda, Atlantic district superintendent.
Local Nazarenes, past and present, have been encouraged by the continued support from members of the Church of the Nazarene from all over the world.
"We are blessed to hear that several Nazarene Disaster Response teams have been deployed within hours of the disaster and they have been helping the victims with immediate crisis assistance, water, food, and spiritual counseling," Gustavo Crocker said. "God's people have been with those suffering every step of the way."
Prayer is requested for the victims' families in Guatemala and the church as it responds.
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Guatemala in 1904. Guatemala reported 753 Churches of the Nazarene in 2017, 655 of which had been officially organized. It has 93,000 total members. Located on the Mesoamerica Region, Guatemala has 12 Phase 3 districts and four Phase 2 districts.

Volcán de Fuego, a volcano located about 25 miles from Guatemala City, erupted 3 June, killing more than 100 people and leaving countless others affected. The number is expected to climb as first responders continue searching for survivors. According to BBC News, this is the first time Volcán de Fuego's eruption resulted in the death of Guatemalan citizens since 1902.
Villages in three provinces — Chimaltenango, Escuintla, Sacatepéquez — were significantly affected by the disaster, leaving many homes consumed by lava and residents buried in ash.
"There's the rest of my family," a victim told Prensa Libre, a local news publication, as he pointed to a pile of ash. "And how could I cry? The only way to cry is to see [my] family."Gustavo A. Passing the torch: Radcliffe family continues service at PNG hospitalAfter serving 33 years as a surgeon at Kudjip Nazarene Hospital in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea, Jim Radcliffe's son Ben is taking his place.
Little did Jim realize then when he and his wife, Kathy, retired at the end of 2017, it would be their son Ben who took over as the surgeon at the hospital.
Back when Ben was attending the one-room high school in Kudjip, he had his ideas about his future.
“I wanted to teach history and coach basketball,” he says. “What I didn’t want was to be a missionary or a doctor!”
That changed during his senior year when he took a course on the history of Christian missions. He read about the work of Christian Medical College Vellore, in south India, and heard God’s voice: “If I asked you to do anything, would you do it?”
Ben’s answer was yes, and he yielded to God’s call to a career in medicine. His idea then was to become a physician who would go overseas only from time to time, to relieve missionary doctors.
Two years later, during revival services at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, he felt God’s call again. This time he knew God was calling him back overseas to pursue a career as a missionary doctor.
In his junior year, Ben began dating fellow student Katherine Stevens, who told him she had experienced her call to be a missionary at age 12. They were both pre-med students. Ben graduated in 2003 and worked on campus for a year until Katherine graduated. They were married in August 2004.
They both applied to several medical schools. Eventually, Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University invited Katherine for an interview. The interviewer asked, “Have any family members studied here?”
"Well, my husband applied here last year, but you didn't accept him."
The interviewer studied Ben’s file and said, “Can your husband come for an interview?”
“He’s in the parking lot—but he’s dressed in a T-shirt and jeans.”
“Tell him to come up here.”
They were both accepted and became the first married couple in the history of the school.
After obtaining their medical degrees in 2009, Katherine went on to a residency in family medicine, finishing in 2012. Ben completed his surgery residency in 2014 at Ohio State University College of Medicine where his father had studied. Following his graduation, Ben and Katherine returned to PNG to assist for several months at the Kudjip hospital. The medical college held Ben in such high esteem that they sent a quarter million dollars worth of medical hardware with him to take to the hospital.
Next, the couple applied to the Samaritan Purse’s Post Residency Program. The program funds a two-year term of service for Christian physicians and their families called to medical missions. The program has partnerships with medical facilities in many parts of the world — including Kudjip Nazarene Hospital.
In February 2015, they got accepted and were on their way to PNG with their two boys, Simeon and Matthias.
“When I said yes to God, I didn’t think I would go back to PNG,” Ben says. “But what a thrill it was to follow God’s leading and spend two years working with Dad.”
But Ben didn't get to work at Kudjip Nazarene Hospital just because his dad was a surgeon there. Ben worked hard, earning his father's respect as a surgeon.
"Ben's training was superb," Jim said. "He took charge of most of the surgeries, and I assisted him. He is a first-class surgeon."
Then an emergency developed when Katherine found she was pregnant with twins.
“We would have been comfortable with the Kudjip staff delivering the babies,” Ben said. “But Katherine had kidney stones and other issues that complicated matters.”
The high-risk situation required a five-month stay in Ohio for the birth of twin girls, Tabea and Naomi. They then completed their two-year appointment and returned to Ohio for further surgery for Katherine.
Ben and Katherine arrived back in PNG with their four children in February 2018. During their previous short stints in Kudjip, father and son had worked together as surgeons for nearly three years. Jim has since retired, and Ben is back on the island, working full-time as a missionary doctor.
“I am sad my parents have moved on,” Ben said. “This is a bittersweet transition, as I won’t get to work with Dad anymore. My medical ministry will benefit from my father’s reputation. Doors will open to me because of him.”
According to Jim Radcliffe, his son and daughter-in-law serve a hospital that has entered a new era.
Katherine is the coordinator of medical volunteers. She handles the scheduling of medical students and residents who come to Kudjip from around the world to do training rotations and for medical professionals who volunteer at the hospital, such as with the Samaritan’s Purse program.
Ben, like his father, has a vision of working himself out of a job. He influences the lives of dozens of medical personnel who are learning from him. Kudjip Hospital participates in a program that trains Papua New Guinean doctors who work in rural and remote areas and was recently approved as a training site for doctors specializing in general surgery.
As a doctor, Ben Radcliffe brings healing in the surgical unit. As a follower of Jesus, he lives a life glorifying his Savior. (Engage Magazine).Read more

Philippines educational leaders prepare for future
More than 30 educational leaders from the Philippines gathered to discuss the past, present, and future of Nazarene education in the country. This meeting was the first of its kind for Nazarene educators in the Philippines.
More than 30 educational leaders from the Philippines gathered in Baguio 19 to 22 May to discuss the past, present, and future of education in the Philippines. The event was the first of its kind for Nazarene educators in the Philippines. The presidents, academic deans, and members of the Board of Trustees, including district superintendents and lay people, represented Philippines Nazarene College (Baguio), Visayan Nazarene Bible College (Cebu), and Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary (Manila).
David Ackerman, Church of the Nazarene Philippines-Micronesia Field Education coordinator, led the group discussions. During this time, they discussed four major topics: discovery, dream, design, and destiny. Then, the representatives met in small groups and answered a series of questions related to each of these four topics. The small groups wrote their insights on poster paper and taped them to the walls.
The group highlighted the ways God has blessed education in the Philippines, as students can go all the way from kindergarten to earning a doctorate of philosophy in the current system.
Finally, the group discussed the future of education in the Philippines. The group came up with many ideas during these discussions, agreeing that the schools need more dialogue and collaboration to facilitate a more effective educational system moving forward.
Asia-Pacific Regional Director Mark Louw was the guest speaker at the retreat. On Sunday, Louw offered a message from 2 Timothy, tracing how Paul’s letter gives insights about the being, knowing, and doing of theological education. Towards the end of the retreat, he provided a collection of his reflections based on the groups’ discussions.
The leaders of these three Nazarene schools are eager to embrace God’s leading to be effective educators for a new generation of church leaders, both lay and ordained. (Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific)Read more

Children celebrate World Weekend of Prayer in Dominican Republic
Hundreds of children gathered in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 2 June to celebrate the World Weekend of Prayer for Children at Risk.
Hundreds of children gathered in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 2 June to celebrate the World Weekend of Prayer for Children at Risk. The event was organized by Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and the Integrated Life Network for Childhood and Adolescence, in association with VIVA, Together For Childhood.
The children and adults who accompanied them enjoyed games, songs, prayer, and reflections about working together for the well-being of children. They focused on the critical role that prayer plays in communicating with God and interceding for those who are most vulnerable — children.
The participants also prayed for those who work in the child and adolescent protection system, asking the Lord to enable them to advance government policies that guarantee the rights of children to receive education and to live full and healthy lives.
“For NCM, it is of vital importance to join initiatives such as the World Weekend of Prayer for Children at Risk," said Paquita Bido, Mesoamerica Central Field NCM coordinator. "Through these activities, we contribute to the spiritual formation of our children while we attract the attention of those who should pray for their well-being, including parents and the authorities.”
To end the event, participants released white balloons as a sign of victory, joy, and peace for children around the world. (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

Flags of the Nations: South Africa
The South Africa flag was designed to symbolize unity. The red, white, and blue colors were taken from the colors of the Boer Republics. The yellow, black, and green are taken from the African National Congress flag. Black symbolises the people, green the fertility of the land, and gold the mineral wealth beneath the soil.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country. This week: South Africa

Rev. Kevin Jack, lead pastor of Beavercreek Church of the Nazarene in Beavercreek, Ohio, spoke at the Baccalaureate service on Friday, May 4. His address highlighted the importance of character and the ability to continuously learn, even outside of the classroom.
“Here’s what I want to press upon you: If your formal time as a student hasn’t filled you with a sense that you are a student and able to learn at all times and all places not just in matters of intellect but in matters of wisdom and character and integrity, then it has failed you regardless of the grades you received. But if you go out into the world, equipped with an education, but armed with courage, and grace, and mercy, and love, you will live out the fullest extent of your calling,” said Jack.
Shirley V. Hoogstra, J.D., president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, spoke at the traditional commencement ceremony on Saturday morning. Hoogstra advised new graduates on how to “make good personal and professional moves” for the rest of their lives.
“First, it starts by knowing your purpose in life … It is to love God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves,” said Hoogstra.
She went on to explain the “five main ways that God guides us” is called “the GPS of decision-making,” or the five S’s: Scripture, spirit, sense, signs, and saints.
Scripture — “Being rooted in scripture allows you to be motivated and instructed in living a wise life … and allows us to have a deep and rich prayer life that advances God’s purpose and therefore our purpose.”
Spirit — “Big and small promptings are like the directional voice of the GPS. I have seen God reroute me in ways that are comforting.”
Sense — “Having the ability to perceive and judge what is happening around you and the ability to interpret for others, helps to guide situations and people.”
Signs — “The GPS of circumstantial signs or the working of providence … ‘the timely preparation for future eventualities.’”
Saints — Hoogstra explained the importance of the family of God and the community of faith. “When we are in a friendship, we are ‘participating in something divine.’”
The 2018 Service Above Self Awards were presented to Michaela Hershberger and Ashton Dupler. These awards are given annually to the male and female graduates who exemplify the school’s motto of “To Seek to Learn is to Seek to Serve.”
The Excellence in Teaching Award for the 2017-18 academic year was presented to Dr. Doug VanNest, Professor of Pastoral Practics.
Dr. Jim Dalton, Professor of Accounting and Business Programs Coordinator for the MVNU School of Graduate and Professional Studies, presented the commencement address to students during the afternoon non-traditional ceremony. Dalton gave graduates a calling to carry out the university’s motto by expressing gratitude to those who have served them through their journey, and to actively seek out an individual way to serve.
“Graduates, each of you here today have someone who has helped you when you were struggling during your race here at MVNU,” said Dalton. “Whether you are graduating today in business, education, health care, ministry, public safety, or in social work, I am charging each of you to find your way to serve.”

Celebrating the Class of 2018 was top priority at Olivet Nazarene University during the week of May 1. From senior week activities to the Baccalaureate service on Friday evening to the Commencement ceremony on Saturday morning, campus was buzzing with special events and thousands of visitors.
After finals were done, seniors enjoyed some time for relaxing and remembering together — Chicago Day, Final Fiesta, Lantern Festival, Worship Night — as well as lots of photos and reminiscing on campus.
Baccalaureate on Friday evening was a time set aside for worshiping together as a campus community with family members present. Special music by the University Orchestra, Orpheus Choir and School of Music faculty plus a message from University President John C. Bowling inspired the graduates.
Personal testimonies from graduates Danielle Maranion, a psychology and sociology double major, and Jonathan Hentschel, a sport management and Spanish double major, expressed thoughts and feelings that many in their class shared with them.
“I pray that the lessons learned here at Olivet will serve you well in the years to come,” said President Bowling in his Charge to the Class of 2018. “You are the heart and soul of a new generation. The world needs you. I encourage you to go forth with confidence, hope and joy.”
Commencement ceremony on Saturday morning marked the academic achievements of this class with 629 bachelor’s degrees conferred. Trevecca graduate Ingrid Rekedal
Trevecca Nazarene University celebrated its 117th Commencement Convocation on Saturday, with ceremonies held in four separate campus locations due to the rainy weather.
The University conferred more than 850 degrees during the weekend event, with thousands of family members, friends and guests in attendance. Graduates celebrated the completion of a number of degrees, ranging from associate and bachelor’s to master’s and doctoral degrees.
Ingrid Rekedal, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in theatre education, was excited as she waited for the processional into Moore Gymnasium to begin.
“I’m excited to graduate with all my friends and family here to share in the accomplishments of the last four years,” she said. The 2018 graduate plans to move to New York City to pursue musical theatre. “The goal is to be on Broadway, so I’ll be waitressing, teaching and auditioning.”
For graduate Angie Guthrie, who received her master’s in organizational leadership on Saturday, the milestone wasn’t just about achieving her goal, but also about setting an example.
“I had a goal that by the time I turned 40, I would be done with school, and my kids are almost done,” she said. “It really shows that it doesn’t matter what age you are, you can always accomplish the goals you set for yourself.”
With the Commencement exercises centering on a theme of “a new song,” Dr. Sam Green, professor of music and director of Trevecca’s worship arts program, delivered the challenge to the graduates. He implored the Class of 2018 to live lives that have an impact on the world.
“Graduates, do you wonder today what new songs you will write in the coming years that will impact the world in which you live and work?” he said. “We have desired to instill in you Christ-like character with real-world relevance, thereby becoming salt and light to those around you. Our hope is that you have been and will continue to be transformed into the image of Christ. The world is desperate for women and men who serve with integrity and character resembling that of Christ.”
Three members of the graduating class—Alana Grimaud, Elizabeth Dye and Jeffrey Norfleet—offered a short response to Green’s challenge.
During the ceremony, University officials also awarded emeritus status to two retiring faculty members, Dr. Judy Bivens and Dr. Ruth Cox, both of whom have served in Trevecca’s School of Education for 18 years. The University also recognized retiring dean of students, Steve Harris, for his 39 years of service to Trevecca by honoring him as an emeritus dean.
In addition, Trevecca officials bestowed an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters on Rev. Pascal Permis from the Southern Florida District of the Church of the Nazarene. Throughout his ministry, Permis has helped to start 18 new churches in several states, including Florida, Georgia, New York and Tennessee, as well as Haiti and Canada. A native of Haiti, Permis has been active in the recovery effort following the 2010 earthquake that devastated the country.
Dr. Dan Boone, president of Trevecca, awarded the citizenship award to Kip Kenerly, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in media arts and studies.
