Redondo Beach, California, United States for Thursday, 18 October 2018 1st United Methodist Church
eNews: Laity Sunday worship at 8:30 and 10:30

Join us Sunday for worship at 8:30am and 10:30am - It's Laity Sunday.
From Pastor Molly: Do Try This at Home
Christianity is best not left to the professionals. It's meant to be practiced by everyone, imperfectly and courageously. It's best when not confined to our church buildings, but let loose in our communities. It becomes powerful as it belongs to the whole community, as love, grace, forgiveness and compassion take root in all of our lives.

Kids: try this at home.

This Sunday, we will celebrate Laity Sunday, a tradition in the church that gives us occasion to celebrate how Christ works in the world, calling ALL of us to be the people through whom God's saving grace is made visible in the world. We (all of us) get to be the ones who help make disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world.

One of our Lay Leaders, Jonathan Tuuholoaki, will preach in both of our worship services this Sunday. I know he will have something powerful to say, and that you will listen for how God will work through him.

Grace and peace,

I will be away on Sunday, at a family wedding in Texas. I will be back in the office next week. As we celebrate Laity Sunday this weekend, we will not have communion during worship.

"Unleashing Your Greatness"
Lay Leader Jonathan Tuuholoaki, preaching
Mark 10:35-45
Mark 10:35 Ya‘akov and Yochanan, the sons of Zavdai, came up to him and said, “Rabbi, we would like you to do us a favor.” 36 He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 They replied, “When you are in your glory, let us sit with you, one on your right and the other on your left.” 38 But Yeshua answered, “You don’t know what you’re asking! Can you drink the cup that I am drinking? or be immersed with the immersion that I must undergo?” 39 They said to him, “We can.” Yeshua replied, “The cup that I am drinking, you will drink; and the immersion I am being immersed with, you will undergo. 40 But to sit on my right and on my left is not mine to give. Rather, it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
41 When the other ten heard about this, they became outraged at Ya‘akov and Yochanan. 42 But Yeshua called them to him and said to them, “You know that among the Goyim, those who are supposed to rule them become tyrants, and their superiors become dictators. 43 But among you, it must not be like that! On the contrary, whoever among you wants to be a leader must be your servant; 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must become everyone’s slave! 45 For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve — and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Complete Jewish Bible)
Mark 10:35-45

Verse 35

[35] And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.
Saying — By their mother. It was she, not they that uttered the words. Matthew 20:20.

Verse 38

[38] But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
Ye know not what ye ask — Ye know not that ye ask for sufferings, which must needs pave the way to glory.
The cup — Of inward; the baptism - Of outward sufferings. Our Lord was filled with sufferings within, and covered with them without.

Verse 40

[40] But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.
Save to them for whom it is prepared — Them who by patient continuance in well doing, seek for glory, and honour, and immortality. For these only eternal life is prepared. To these, only he will give it in that day; and to every man his own reward, according to his own labour.

Verse 45

[45] For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
A ransom for many — Even for as many souls as needed such a ransom, 2 Corinthians 5:15. (The John Wesley's Explanatory Notes).

Bob Peterson

Bob Peterson's popular column for the Mainsail has found new life, online! Read his view from the pews about church life and community news. You'll enjoy keeping up with the many good things happening in our congregation!
 by Bob Peterson

The first time I ever walked into our church building was in April, 1948. My impression was that this was an old person's church. The sermon was given by an old Pastor and his sermon didn't speak to me. So, my wife, Ada Belle and I took our two small children, Jean and Steve, to Manhattan Beach Community Church which, in those days was on Highland Avenue near Manhattan Beach Blvd. We liked what we found there and attended for two years. In 1950 a change in Pastors brought Rev. Hylton Sanders and his wife Dorothy to this church. We attended one Sunday and have never looked back, especially when our children said, “Oh, we like this Sunday School much better than the other!”
I'm sure similar stories have been told by our present membership and over the years by others. What is your story about how you found The Redondo Beach First United Methodist Church on the corner of Torrance Blvd. and Broadway and decided this will be my permanent church. If you don't feel like telling me, tell Pastor Molly Vetter or Ernie Valenzuela or Rev. Stephen Hale. I'm certain they would love to hear your story about finding our church and deciding to join this wonderful congregation.
Incidentally, referring to the above mentioned Rev. Sanders, he had been Ada Belle's and my top church faculty officer at summer camp at Radford Methodist Youth Camp in the San Bernardino mountains about 1939 or 1940 before we started dating, becoming a couple and being married in 1942, so that was the connection. Years later I learned that my former Pastor, J. Maxwell Chamberlin at Southwest Community Methodist Church, and that he was one of the special liberal Pastors of our Methodist Conference. He became a special friend of mine.
Hope to see all of you again this Sunday.

Update from our Finance Committee
This Monday, I reported to the Administrative Council the September financial results. The year to date income that was budgeted is now $50,000 behind. We recognize that the timing of our income varies depending on the months, but the deficit has continued to grow, so it is important that we recognize it at this time.

The income for the next three months is budgeted for $100,000. With the shortfall of $50,000, we need to have income of $150,000 or $50,000 per month to reach our goals. This income supports our ministries and the programs at our church. We need everyone to help to correct this problem so we can continue all.

Thank you for your support.
Gary Baughman, Chair of the Finance Committee
We have fund raising activities planned - our golf tournament this weekend and the Night on Broadway in November. If we all can help out, we can correct the shortfall and build for next year.
Join Pastor Molly for fun and thought-provoking sermons this fall. We will explore questions about how God sees us, and how Jesus invites us to look at the world, with a dive deep into the Gospel of Mark.
See and Be Seen Sermon Series

Thursday, October 18, 2018 - Music Notes

Jim Raycroft
    Music Director, Jim Raycroft, will
    share upcoming worship music
selections and a little bit of history, too.
  by Jim Raycroft

I have to send a huge shout out to everyone who participated in Composer Sunday last week.  It was wonderfully inspiring and hugely successful, and, as usual, our musicians – singing musicians and instrumental musicians – stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park.  There were 7 pieces of music to be prepared, and each piece was different and inspiring.  Karen sent me a text later that day telling me how wonderful it all was, how much she enjoyed meeting the members of the congregation, and how beautifully the choir sang.  My wife, Eileen, says she spoke to someone who was there who told her that she always makes a point to come for Composer Sunday.

In 1969, Tim Hauser formed a vocal group he called “The Manhattan Transfer”, after the novel by John Dos Passos.  The group that became renowned, however, was formed in 1972, comprised of Hauser, Laurel Massé (who Hauser met while driving a cab), Alan Paul (who was a cast member of Grease) and Janis Siegel.  Massé dropped out of the group in 1978 after being badly injured in a car accident, and was replaced by Cheryl Bentyne.  Their self-titled album of 1975 contained recordings of the tunes Java Jive and Tuxedo Junction, and scored their first top 20 hit, Operator.  Operator went to #22 on the US Hot 100 chart, and was #26 in Canada.  The group continues to perform to this day, with all the members having relocated to Los Angeles.  Baritone Trist Curless replaced Hauser in the group when Hauser died of cardiac arrest in 2014.

The band Hillsong United was formed in 1998 from close friends within the Hillsong youth ministry (called “Powerhouse Youth”).  So many songs were being written within the youth ministry that it was suggested they make an album.   The songs One and Everyday were recorded and released with the annual Hillsong worship album in 1999.  They both achieved gold sales status in Australia, and the band has gone on to win five Dove Awards in 2014 and were nominated for an American Music Award and won the Billboard Music Award Top Christian Artist in 2015.  Their song This I Believe (The Creed) was released in 2014 on the album No Other Name.  The album peaked at #2 on the Aria albums chart, and although This I Believe (The Creed) has not been released as a single, it was #2 on Worship Leader’s Top 20 Songs of 2014 and has received airtime.

Be Thou My Vision is an old favorite hymn that has its roots in 6th century Ireland.  The original Old Irish text - Rop tú mo Baile – is often attributed to Saint Dallan Forgaill in the 6th century.  The prayer was an Irish monastic tradition for centuries before being set to music.  There are two manuscripts of the text in the National Library of Ireland, both dating back to the 10thcentury.  It was first translated from the Old Irish into English by Mary Elizabeth Byrne in 1905, and then re-written into singable verse by Eleanor Hull in 1912, which is the text most commonly used.  In 1919, it was set to the Irish folk tune Slane, named after the town of Slane in County Meath, where, on Slane Hill in 433, Saint Patrick defied a royal edict by the High King of Ireland and got himself into trouble (it wasn’t about snakes, it was about a bonfire).  The tune first shows up published as With My Love on the Road in Patrick Joyce's Old Irish Folk Music and Songs in 1909.  The 1919 edition of the Irish Church Hymnal is where we first find the song we sing today.
