Cabo Verde church expands to include second district
Future Advisory Board in 2014. “Division into two districts is the best solution to meet current and future challenges."
The Cabo Verde District is currently 118 years old and has 64 organized churches, 50 ordained ministers, 10 licensed ministers, five lay pastors, and approximately 8,050 members.
Cabo Verde is a small country made up of 10 islands located more than 300 miles off the west coast of Africa; nine of the islands are inhabited and one is deserted. Nearly 500,000 people live in the country with a population density of approximately 300 inhabitants per square mile.
“Our geographic configuration and cultural variations allow for a division of the current district,” said Oziel Morais, district communications coordinator.
Once all the assembly votes were tallied, General Superintendent Eugénio Duarte — a Cabo Verde native — announced the country will have a second district.
"The motion to create a new district is unanimously approved,” Duarte said. “This is a historical moment in the Church of the Nazarene in Cabo Verde. It is 12 p.m. on this 27th of July 2018 in Ribeira Grande. Let us now take a break in this assembly from the assembly business to celebrate this historic moment in our church."
The new district will be called the Cabo Verde North District, and the headquarters will be on the island of São Vicente, the most populated island of the area. The district will also include the islands of Santo Antão, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Sal, and Boa Vista. This group of islands currently has 21 churches, 2,633 members, 16 elders, seven licensed ministers, and accounted for 40 percent of the current district's financial collections in the last ecclesiastical year.
The national leadership now has one year to establish the systems and structures for the new district, which will be made official at next year’s district assembly in Sal Rei on the island of Boa Vista. The new district superintendent and other district officials will be appointed at that time.
“It will be a year of great changes and achievements for the Cabo Verdean church — a great landmark,” Morais said. “All wisdom and direction from above are necessary at this crucial time for the church of Christ in the Cabo Verde islands. May the prayers of the Nazarenes of the islands and of the world be made on our behalf, that the purposes of God may be fulfilled in His church.” (Church of the Nazarene Africa) Read more

Russian YouTube travel show aims to plant churches
Several years ago, restrictive legislation and increasing government pressure in Russia were making it more difficult to rely on traditional methods for evangelism and church planting. Yuri, a Nazarene pastor in Russia, turned to the greater religious freedom of the Internet and of Russia’s neighboring country — Finland — to share the Gospel. He developed a Russian YouTube channel called Alfa-News.TV — an online travel and exploration show that utilizes five key themes to connect to its audience: adventure, history, tourism, exploration, and spirituality.Once the programming draws at least 1,000 regular followers, the YouTube channel will begin broadcasting informal worship services alongside its travel-based content, which Yuri believes they’ll start this autumn. The program has about 300 followers on YouTube, 300 more on its Facebook page, and an additional 300 on VK, a popular Russian social media platform.
As the online services begin to draw a consistent following, Yuri plans to eventually organize the viewers who are interested in real-world house churches or small groups. Nazarene congregations and pastors on the district are ready to provide support, especially the church in Volgograd, Russia, where Yuri previously was a pastor. He considers this the mother church of any new groups that are planted.
This approach will not violate Russia’s recently enacted laws limiting evangelism and locations where Christians can meet for worship.
“If they like an adventure program, when we start to talk about spiritual things they already like and trust us, and they start to hear from us the message about God and the Gospel,” Yuri said. “They give us trust in that area.”
Yuri turned to a Christian TV station in Finland to make this possible. He partnered with them to develop, film, and produce Alfa-News.TV. The station donates studio space and one week of work every month from one of their salaried employees.
A Christian marketing firm in Siberia donated a drone so the team could shoot high-quality aerial footage. Several of Yuri’s Russian friends in the film profession also volunteer their time and expertise.
Yuri chose to partner with a station in Finland because they share an extensive border with Russia and have a significant Russian-speaking population. It also helps that many Russian people are interested in Finland and regularly travel there on vacation.
With high-end camera work, editing, and graphic animations, the show is competitive with other secular programming in the genre.
In one episode, a team of geolocators visits a medieval castle where they reveal interesting aspects of the fortress’ architecture and history, as well as provide travel tips for tourists. Throughout the show, Yuri shares religious or spiritual history of the site, connecting it to topics of Christian spirituality.
Episodes often feature the team praying together for viewers or future visitors to the site.
Another 12-episode series follows Yuri and a group of Nazarene Eurasia Region leaders on a Trans-Siberian Railway trip from Moscow in the west of Russia to Voldovostock on the far east border with China and North Korea. The group learns about the cultures of cities along the way while stopping to pray for God’s Spirit to be present and active in each city.
Additionally, the team occasionally records programs in which they simply sit and discuss complex topics that are relevant to both Finland and Russia.
Yuri even moved to St. Petersburg — a city close to Finland’s border — making it easier and more affordable to travel there regularly for planning and filming episodes of the show as it continues to grow its audience. (Church of the Nazarene Eurasia)

Kudjip, Papua New Guinea
Scott Dooley, his wife Gail, and their three daughters, Allison, Emma, and Olivia.
Papua New Guinea hospital advances ‘two cents’ at a time
In Kudjip, Papua New Guinea, stands a Nazarene hospital that served nearly 70,000 patients in 2017 alone. This mission hospital employs more than 230 staff from all over Papua New Guinea and regularly plants churches through patient follow-ups, including five churches just last year.
But a mission this vast and impactful isn’t free of obstacles — particularly financial ones. Kudjip Nazarene Hospital Administrator Scott Dooley shared some of the trials the hospital has faced.
“We had tried for a few years to get donors for a multi-million-dollar project that was critical to keeping the hospital functional,” Dooley said. “The church gave, and over time, we got enough donations to try to begin to piece together a solution.”
The result wasn’t up to the standards the hospital had hoped for, but it was a blessing because it kept the hospital functional.
Later, the hospital was given an opportunity to apply for a larger source of funding, but the hospital hit its fair share of speed bumps during the application process.
“The truth is we didn’t really qualify,” Dooley said. “[At] every step I would find things that technically disqualified us.”
Just as the hospital staff and administration team were expecting the worst, they learned the donor believed in their mission so much that they were willing to openly make exceptions.
“We have seen who your church is,” the donor fund manager said. “You are the people that get it done. You bring in experts and volunteers and people you couldn’t possibly pay what they are worth. You get more done with little than we have ever seen. We don’t know how you would have done it, but somehow you would have pulled together a working system with the little you had. We just want to come alongside and help you do it well.”
After the project was complete, some of the early donors felt that what they had initially given was insignificant compared to this donor.
“A friend said he worried sometimes that people will see that the hospital is building these giant buildings in our infrastructure project [and feel] like they are just putting in ‘two cents’ compared to the wealth being contributed by other partners,” Dooley said.
Dooley and the rest of the hospital staff know this wasn’t true. Jesus shared the same truth with his disciples in Mark 12 after watching a widow at the temple give two small coins, saying she “has put more into the treasury than all the others” (verse 43).
“I am now convinced that Jesus is being literal [in Mark 12],” he said. “God will literally do more with the two cents of obedient sacrifice given in love than all the wealth of the world.”
Thanks to the continued prayer and generosity from individuals in the Church of the Nazarene around the world, not only are the lives of the patients changed, but other businesses and organizations are moved by the mission and support surrounding the Kudjip hospital.
“It is really all those people giving their last two cents,” Dooley said. “From the elderly lady I have written with who has supported this hospital literally since its inception, to the long-term missionaries who have given their lives to this work, to the visiting work team who pay their own way here, this is what makes the hospital run.”
Without Church of the Nazarene members around the world contributing to missions financially and through prayer, projects like this would never be possible.
“It is true that we build better quality at a fraction of the cost of any contractor in the country, but ultimately major donors don’t invest in our projects just because we are great at building things, but because we are a great hospital,” Dooley said. “And we are a great hospital because of the church.” (Kudjip Nazarene Hospital

Trinidad and Tobago suffers damage after floods
Many churches and homes were damaged last week by severe flooding after heavy rains caused rivers to overflow in Trinidad and Tobago. Some buildings were left with major structural damage, including the Church of the Nazarene in Piarco.
Local fire departments have rescued several people who were trapped in their homes, flights have been canceled due to lack of visibility, and many people have lost all their belongings, including several Nazarene pastors and their church members.
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and local Nazarene churches are collecting and distributing food and supplies throughout the country. In many cases, the floods made it difficult for them to provide care and resources to civilians.
NCM is in the process of sending more pastors and church members to the affected areas to provide additional help where needed. They have also contacted government agencies and other relief groups to offer up their services wherever possible. (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

Brad Griffin of The Fuller Institute is youth pastor at the Mountainside Communion Church of the Nazarene.
M19 pre-conference event to highlight positive trends for youth engagement
Nazarene Youth International announced the M19 Conference, scheduled for 11-13 February in Kansas City, Missouri, will feature a pre-conference event called Growing Young: Helping Young People Discover and Love Your Church. The pre-conference will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. 11 February, and all ministry leaders are invited to register.
The event will be led by Brad Griffin, director of the Fuller Youth Institute and youth pastor at Mountainside Communion Church of the Nazarene, and Keegan Lenker, lead pastor at Gig Harbor Church of the Nazarene. Griffin and Lenker will educate attendees on the positive things happening amid the ominous reports of the demise of faith among youth.
The Fuller Youth Institute studied congregations that effectively captured the imaginations and hearts of young people and found six core commitments these churches held in common.
“In a time when so much emphasis is being focused on generational differences, Growing Young reminds that there are proven and effective ways to engage young people into the life of the church that also revitalizes congregations for missional fruitfulness,” said David Busic, general superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene.
Pre-conference seating is limited, and registration costs $25. For more information or to register, visit m19conference.org/pre-conference.
Early bird registration for the M19 conference is $39 until 31 October, after which the price will increase to $59. (Church of the Nazarene USA/Canada)

The Cameroon flag is a vertical tricolor of green, red and yellow, defaced with a five-pointed star in its center. The center stripe is thought to stand for unity: red is the colour of unity, and the star is referred to as "the star of unity." The yellow stands for the sun and also the savannas in the northern part of the country, while the green is for the forests in the southern part of Cameroon.
Flags of the Nations: Cameroon
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Cameroon
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Cameroon in 1999.
Cameroon had a population of 24,994,885 in 2017. Located on the Africa Region, Cameroon has not yet reported any Churches of the Nazarene. For more information about the Africa Region, visit africanazarene.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole. The Global Ministry Center is the mission and service hub of the Church of the Nazarene.

Murdoch, Western Australia
Janet Stone remembered
Janet Mary Hopgood Stone, 84, passed away 14 October in Murdoch, Western Australia. She was the widow of Max Stone, the first Australian-born district superintendent of the Australia Southern District.
Born on 14 February 1934 in Adelaide, South Australia, Janet Hopgood and her family attended the Prospect North Methodist church in Adelaide from an early age. Also attending this church was her future husband, Max Stone, who accepted Christ during a special mission at the church in 1951. After hearing the Nazarene radio program Showers of Blessing later that year, Max and Janet began attending the Adelaide Church of the Nazarene, the third Nazarene congregation in Australia, which was inaugurated in March 1947. The congregation experienced a season of revival that year, resulting in the salvation and entire sanctification of many who later went on to become Nazarene pastors in Australia, including Max Stone.
Soon after their wedding in 1954, Max and Janet attended Nazarene Bible College in Sydney (now Nazarene Theological College). After graduation from NBC in 1957, the Stones returned to Adelaide, where Max became the Pastor of the Croydon Park church. Four years later, Max was ordained in the Church of the Nazarene.
By 1964, they moved to Queensland with their three boys, Garry, Mark, and David, where Max, who was now both district secretary and a member of the District Advisory Board, became pastor for the next five years of the Stafford church in Brisbane.
From 1969 to 1973, the Stones served the central Queensland mining community of Biloela, where Max was the pastor of the Biloela church and operated a driving school while Janet founded and operated a successful childcare center. The following year, the Stone family moved back to South Australia, where Max served for the next six years as pastor of the Gawler church.
The Australia Southern District was created in March 1977, and Max became the first district secretary. A few years later, Max accepted a call to the church in Victoria. During this six-year pastorate, Max was elected district superintendent in January 1981, and Janet later became district president of Nazarene Missions International. During his time serving as DS, Max also served as supply pastor in Melbourne, Adelaide, Gawler, and Birrong.
After Max resigned as district superintendent due to health issues in 1994, the Stones relocated to Western Australia, settling in 1996 in Rockingham. During his retirement years, Max served as a supply pastor twice in Perth and also as a chaplain for Baptist Care. Later on, Max and Janet moved into the Mandurah Gardens Retirement Village in Coodanup, where Max served as chaplain until a year before his death in 2012.
Janet Stone is survived by her three sons, Garry, Mark, and David; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday 25 October at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Former Australia-New Zealand Field Strategy Coordinator Robert Woodruff will conduct the service. Mexico Oaxaca District holds first women's conference
The Mexico Oaxaca Northwest District held its first women’s conference called “Glorious” from 12-13 October at the Praise and Proclamation Center Church of the Nazarene. Nearly 1,000 women came from districts across Mexico to attend the conference.
District leaders wanted to use this event to strengthen the participants’ identities in Christ and to strengthen women’s ministries in local churches throughout the country.
“Women play a key role and have a great influence in society,” said Josue Barrera, district communications coordinator. “This event had the purpose to empower, bring spiritual healing, and present the Gospel message through the preaching of the Word.”
There were three local pastors who spoke throughout the conference — Nineye Herrera, Mabel Betanzos, and Carlos Ortiz.
“An important aspect of this event was the time of fellowship participants enjoyed during the services and during break times,” Barrera said. “As a result the district will be stronger, and the district leadership hopes this event will encourage other departments to celebrate events like this to win Oaxaca for Christ.”
Local leaders considered the event a success and are looking forward to hosting this conference annually.
“We hope to create a movement amongst the churches in the district, and this event is a good start,” Barrera said. “November 2019 will be the next women’s conference.” (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

Paraguay Center of Leadership Development resources local leaders
Local church leaders throughout Paraguay recently completed a six-month training program called Disciples in Ministry.
The national ministry coordinators were each in charge of the training in their respective areas — Samuel Ferreira was in charge of Nazarene Youth International, Pastor Pablo Tello was in charge of Nazarene Missions International, and Viviana Tello was in charge of Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries.
“We are immensely grateful for this training,” Pablo and Viviana said. “Every Sunday, from the month of April through October, leaders from different churches have attended faithfully to receive instruction, resources, and tools for ministry in NYI, NMI, and SDMI.”
The Disciples in Ministry program has been a very impactful experience for the Church of the Nazarene in Paraguay, allowing the district to reconnect with local leaders.
“All of this has strengthened the unity and fellowship between the churches on the district,” Pablo and Viviana said. “We have enjoyed times of worship and prayer. It has been a wonderful time that has doubtlessly marked the lives of many.”
A graduation service was held 7 October in Fernando de la Mora, Paraguay, for those who completed the course, which was offered by the Center of Leadership Development on the Central District.
Jorge Julca, Disciples in Ministry and Theological Education regional coordinator, spoke at the event. More than 20 certificates were given to leaders of different congregations from the Central District, and many more attended training workshops that were offered at the event.
“Throughout these months we have been able to testify to the work of God,” Pablo and Viviana said. “We have seen how God is raising up people who are available to love God’s work and want to invest their lives where God has called them.”
On 15 September, participants took a short-term mission trip to the community of Atyrá. They visited the Church of the Nazarene in Mbururú to show what they learned over the previous year through the program.
In the morning, the entire NMI team walked through the community to share the Gospel. Later in the afternoon they had a party on the church property for children called “Party with Jesus,” which was led by the SDMI and NYI. At the party there were songs, games, a Bible lesson, and a snack.
Following the children’s party, the group finished the day by hosting a worship service. Ferreira spoke at the service.
“Seeing people give their lives to God was the best part of the day,” Pablo and Viviana said. “About 40 people attended throughout the day. Many more received prayer and made a decision for Christ in their homes. It was a beautiful day; the participants returned tired and satisfied with the day’s ministry.” (Church of the Nazarene South America)
