Greetings!
There have been a lot of changes in the Village in the past year and some of us thought it would be good to talk about them.
For one, Doug Pagitt — who has been leading the charge around Emergent Village organizing for many years — has moved on to working on the CANA Initiative. We want to acknowledge the many years of friendship, convening and care that Doug put into this community. We wish him well on his work bringing CANA to life.
Emergent Village as a 501(c)3 organization will no longer be a legal entity with a board (“Village Council”), etc. EV has always first and foremost been a community, and it will continue to be so. This decision was made by the three remaining Council members (Doug Pagitt, Deth Im, and Florin Paladie), who felt there was not enough energy to sustain the infrastructure that this filing status requires.
So with lots of changes afoot, some of us felt like now would be a good time to email the list with these updates ...
EMERGENTVILLAGE.ORG
The EV website will continue to be maintained (by Florin Paladie and Steve Knight) and accessible in order to point people to where emergent conversation is ongoing — namely cohorts, the very active Facebook group (which is in the process of re-organizing with a new moderation system and team), and the Patheos blog.
PATHEOS BLOG
The Emergent Village Voice blog at Patheos is no longer being moderated by Doug Pagitt. A new moderation group is forming. If you’re interested in becoming a regular contributor to the blog, reply to this email and we will put you in touch with someone from the new moderation team.
COHORTS
Dozens of Emergent cohort groups continue to meet around the country and new communities are encouraged to continue forming freely, as needed. You can contact Mike Clawson if you want help or advice about doing that.
SURVEY
We’re curious to hear your thoughts on the value, function, and future of Emergent Village. We’ve put together some survey questions that we’d love you to respond to. We will share the results of the survey publicly, with this email list and the EV Facebook group. The survey will close out March 15th, so please take the survey online soon. We hope this will be a good tool in our collective discernment around the structure and direction of Emergent Village going forward.
CONVERSATIONS @ TRANSFORM 2014
The closest thing to an Emergent Theological Conversation happening this year is the TransFORM 2014 gathering, March 27-30 in San Diego, California. Theologian Joerg Rieger will be with us all weekend, as we explore the intersections of missional, activist, and contemplative practice. There will be time set aside for an Emergent Village conversation that will address questions about the future of EV, EV’s involvement in CANA, the village council and more with Mike Clawson hosting. There will also be a number of Emergent conversations: Afro-Emergence (led by Anthony Smith and Peter Matthews), Queermergent (led by Adele Sakler), and Skeptimergent (led by Kile B. Jones).
Tickets are available on a sliding scale to allow access for all income levels. No one will be turned away for lack of funds, though space is limited. Register online now or email Holly Roach at hollyrsf@gmail.com to volunteer in exchange for registration.
WILD GOOSE FESTIVAL
Wild Goose Festival has become an event where Emergent Village people are meeting up, and in some ways has replaced the annual Glorieta gathering. We would love to see you there, and if you are interested in hosting a conversation or camping together, let’s kick around some ideas on the Facebook group! If you would like to do a workshop or talk at Wild Goose 2014, submit your offering online by February 28.
We hope to see you in person or online this year, to continue experiencing a generative, life-giving, emerging community with you all!
