In Real Life |

Buck is the horse whisperer In Real Life, that Redford modeled his character after in his movie. And Buck became the set consultant during filming of The Horse Whisperer. However, it is in the movie, entitled Buck, that we hear how Buck became a real life whisperer. We explore how he treats animals gently; how they come to know his slightest nudge and want to please him. We learn that Buck decided to live a life of gentleness though he was raised in the midst of violence and abuse. As a child roping performer he was whipped for not being perfect. How many show horses or beasts of burden are whipped to perform? Do they perform better? Do they love their owners more? Are they unable to learn in whole healthy ways, with positive affirmation?
Foster parents nurtured Buck and showed him dignity; bringing out who God intended him to be. Through his deep relationship with animals Buck discovered that animals’ behavior (good or bad) is generally a reflection on their owner’s state of health and soul. Likewise how we treat other humans can be a reflection of our own inner peace or lack thereof. Buck is a living metaphor for grace and for discipleship. If only we can learn to build each other up with gentleness and respect, then maybe (just maybe) we may whisper in each other’s ears a kind word.
What whisper do you have today?
