Trinity United Methodist Church in Gainsville, Florida ~Daily Scripture Email - Tuesday, 18 February 2014 - Devotion "Gideon"
The Lord said to Gideon, "You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her." (Judges 7:2,3)
You're probably a lot like Gideon; I am. When I go into a challenging situation, I want "all the help I can get"! So, when Gideon was called to go into battle, he gathered as many warriors as he could find. But God kept cutting the number back and back and back until there were only 300 (Hey, I wonder if that's where that movie title came from; I've not seen it, so don't know; if you do, let me know).
Here's how E. Stanley Jones came at this same idea: He prayed, "God, call me to something that is so big and so beyond my own abilities that I will fail without the help and power of your Holy Spirit." Well, being a Mom or Dad, or teacher or worker; you name it, there is a dimension to all of life that is beyond us, and it's so important to
call on God for "our daily bread."
Remember: You are not alone. So, call on; rely on the power of God - today and everyday. Amen.
