Depression is not a shameful illness that has to be hidden from ourselves and others. It is alright to suffer from it; it is part of our being and part of the story of our lives. But this does not mean that we should allow ourselves to sink into a morbid sadness. In order to find new life we have to react! We do not have to become slaves to these feelings which rise up in our consciousness, but we must learn to manage them so that we can be gradually liberated from them.(Jean Vanier, Seeing Beyond Depression, page 33)
