Blue Springs, Missouri, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Blue Springs eNote with Pastor Penny Ellwood for Friday, 29 August 2014
Take a look at our upcoming activites below:
Hello Resurrection Blue Springs Family and Friends,
Yesterday Bill and I celebrated our 33rd anniversary. Last night we talked about how we hoped it was only our halfway mark, as we've been so blessed in our marriage.   In last Sunday's sermon Adam spoke about the power of words in families. Bill taught me something early on in our relationship about the power of words.
I come from a long line of complainers.  Unfortunately, I picked up this bad habit as well.   So when Bill and I were first married, I had a tendency to complain about all his irritating little habits with my friends and colleagues (not that I didn't have a fair share of my own).  If you would have asked my workmates what they knew of my husband this is likely what they would have shared.  However, whenever I went into my husband's place of work, invariably one of his colleagues would come up to me and say something like, "Your husband speaks so highly of you." or "He was telling me about how you . . " and would go on to share some positive story or attribute that complimented me.  "He must love you very much,"  they always ended up saying.
When I thought about the difference, I was ashamed of myself. There were so many wonderful things I could have shared about him but I choose to nitpick and highlight the negatives instead of the far greater number of positive things I could have said.  I decided I needed to change my ways.  There was little good reason to say a disparaging word about him and so (for the most part) I try not to now. I think this has added to the strength of our marriage over the years.  He still ends up being the brunt of some of my sermon illustrations, but hopefully those who know me now also know more about the amazing partner I married and how much I love him as well.  He continues to make me a better person and I am inordinately blessed to have him in my life.
This weekend in worship we are continuing our sermon series on The Power of Words. We’ll be focusing on the words we use when it comes to politics. Adam interviewed Jack Danforth as a part of this message forSunday. Jack Danforth was the US ambassador to the United Nations and served for 18 years in the US Senate.  He’s also an Episcopal priest and founder of the Danforth Center for Religion and Politics.  This will be an important message on how we bring our faith to bear on the words we use in politics. In this Sunday's bulletin and listed below, you'll see a host of new classes and opportunities beginning this month to help you seek a deeper understanding about who God is with others who want to grow and learn about how to become a deeply committed Christian together
It is also Labor Day weekend, which means we’ll be holding a Family Worship Sunday This means that we won’t have KiDSCOR programming, but our Nursery will be available for infants to 4 years of age.  These opportunities are important for our children to learn about the importance of worship with their families.  I can still remember sitting next to my grandma and singing in worship as a child.  She smelled of carnations and always carried these hard malt ball candies to entice us to learn to sit still.  Additionally, our Church offices and buildings will be closed Monday, Sept. 1in observance of the Labor Day Holiday
Last Sunday at Pizza with the Pastor, we welcomed 5 new members into our Church family:  James Caldwell, Aaron and Rachel Jones and their children Callen and Everett.  Please extend them a warm welcome to Rez Blue Springs, when you next see them.
Here are some of our upcoming activities:
Gift Baskets for Auction  We are putting together 4 gift baskets for the live auction that will take place at the end of the Ride Against Hunger motorcycle ride on September 20th.  The theme of the 4 baskets are Barbeque, Movie Night, Italian, and Beauty.  You can select from a list of requested items for the baskets, purchase those and return them to the baskets at the church.  The money raised from the auction and from the motorcycle ride will go to provide weekend food to students in Blue Springs through our Healthy Foundations program.  Please return the items by September 7th.

No question about life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile. It's about exploration and discovery.  It's a perfect opportunity for our youth to invite their friends and engage with them in the basics of Christianity.  The evening will start with a time of fellowship, followed by a short worship with our youth praise team and then the Alpha lesson and small group discussion.  Pizza is available for $1 a slice at 6 pm.
