Greetings RezDowntowners,
I hope this message finds you doing well and I hope you still have a voice after cheering on the Kansas City Royals to their first visit to the World Series since 1985. It is so cool to see how this city is coming alive and coming together! Go Royals!
It’s been a great week in the life of the church as well. On Monday I had the opportunity to speak in Dallas, TX to a group of pastors looking to plant churches across the country. While I was there, I shared a keynote presentation and several break-out groups. The whole time I was sharing and reflecting upon stories from Kansas City. I talked about the power of invitation and holy interruption. I shared about the importance of seeing everything we do and everyone we meet as an opportunity to invite others to join us on a journey of knowing, loving and serving God, and to make friends out of strangers. It was great fun and the best part was how proud I felt to be your pastor. I am privileged to be a part of this community and to be a part of this city.
It has been a great week of reflecting, but it’s also been a week filled with activity. We launched our Care Classes this week with great success, our Men’s Retreat kicks off today at Noon, we have a big FaithWork Saturday this Saturday and Coffee with the Pastors is happening this Sunday. Another thing that we’re getting excited about is our first ever Family Advent Night and Children’s Christmas Program. If you are interested in helping out, playing a part or ministering to our children and youth, we would love for you to help us put together our first Children’s Christmas Play, click here to find out how!
It has been a great week and it will be an even better weekend in worship! We are continuing our sermon series on The Call, The Apostle Paul’s life, mission and ministry. It will be a weekend filled with anointing and baptism. I hope you’ll invite friends to join us as we continue building Christian community where non-religious and nominally religious people are becoming deeply committed Christians.
In the meantime, here are some ways to get connected to the life of this church:
Men’s Retreat Starts Today! Bring a friend and join other men Friday – Saturday, Oct. 17 - 18,noon to noon, for food, skeet shooting, fishing, horseshoes and just hanging out by the fire. Pastors Scott and Todd will be at Camp Timberlake (8285 W. 179th St., Overland Park, KS) to lead discussions as we build community in the great outdoors! Bring a chair, a sleeping bag and your fishing pole if desired. A small fee of $10 will be collected at the campout to cover costs, but scholarships are available! To RSVP or for more information, visit rezdowntown.org/mensretreat or contact Troy Herrick at detailsbytdh@gmail.com.
October Faithwork – Every 3rd Saturday of the month, we send out people to serve the community. All you have to do is show-up at the church at 1522 McGee at 9am wearing clothes that can get dirty, and we will send you out to serve at Happy Bottoms, ReStart and a community garden. We also will have on-site projects for people who like to knit, plus an activity for kids to decorate cookies and deliver them to those in need. It will be a huge day and you will want to be a part of it! For more information, contact Pastor Todd at todd.maberry@cor.org. Also, the KC Marathon will be happening and you'll want to be sure that you avoid the Marathon traffic, please approach from the East side!
BBQ Club is Back this Saturday – Pastor Todd is curious to know which BBQ place is the best in Kansas City. Each month he tries a new dive on the third Saturday of the month. For October, the BBQ Club will be trying out Quick’s BBQ (1007 Merriam Lane, Kansas City, KS). Quick’s, family owned and operated since 1964, slow cooks the BBQ over hickory fired ovens. If you love BBQ, plan to meet Pastor Todd around 12:30 pm (after Faithwork). Bring a friend – unless your friend is a vegetarian!
