Advent Devotion for Sunday, 21 December 2014 from Society of St. Andrew

"Praying for Peacemakers"Read: Matthew 5:9 “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.

Writings I enjoy most are biographies of notable people. For example, life-stories of Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King, Jr., Woodrow Wilson, and Albert Schweitzer are inspirations to me. These have at least one thing in common, having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In their own way, in varied circumstances, they were peacemakers. They sought peace and justice. Their objectives differed, their success was not always measurable, and their efforts were frequently controversial.

Today’s world needs peacemakers—among war-torn people, in city
streets, in homes, workplaces, sports arenas, and classrooms. Violence, discord, and strife take many forms: armed conflict, terrorist attacks, family abuse, playground bullying, human trafficking; and mental or spiritual

turmoil. Seeking peace, on a personal or global scale, is a noble calling.

Those living with hunger may find peace when they have food on their
tables. The Society of St. Andrew works constantly to make this possible.
To relieve hunger is to make peace in the spirit of the One whose birth we celebrate in this season.

Centuries before the birth of Jesus, the prophet Isaiah foresaw the
Messiah to be “Prince of Peace.” Jesus said “Blessed are the peacemakers.”
Jesus wept for the city’s failure to know what made for peace. We pray Christ will show us paths of peace today, including peace of mind and heart.

Peacemakers are needed. How can you be a peacemaker today?

Prayer: “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.” (Prayer of
St. Francis of Assisi)[Hasbrouck Hughes, Williamsburg, Virginia, United States]

Feed your spiritual hunger during the weeks leading up to Christmas with these daily devotions from Society of St. Andrew, offering scripture readings, meditations, and prayers focusing on the coming birth of Jesus, the “Prince of Peace.”

And as you feed your spiritual hunger, we invite you to give generously to feed the physical hunger of nearly 50 million low-income Americans through the gleaning and food distribution ministries of Society of St. Andrew.
Through your faithful giving, as you are fed, so will our hungry brothers and sisters be fed. Every dollar you share will put 50 servings of healthy, nourishing food on their plates this winter.

May God’s light shine brightly through you in this holy season.
