SCRIPTURE: “The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad.”[Psalm 118:24]
This is the time of year that can be full of lights (the LED variety). We can become unraveled by the materialistic side of Christmas so much so that we sometimes lose sight of what God has already done for us by coming to earth – Emmanuel: God among us.
One of my favorite books to re-read in December is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. It reminds me that I often enter into Advent with preset expectations and those expectations limit the wonderful surprises God has planned for me. As the book’s story unfolds with the adventure of the six Herdman kids taking over the annual church Christmas pageant I begin to understand what truly happens to us when God’s perfect light breaks through life’s imperfections. What if Mary and Joseph looked tired and in disarray? What if the Wise Men weren’t as rich as we think they were and brought the most costly gift they could: a ham? What if the Angel of the Lord was named Gladys and she had skinny legs, dirty sneakers, and a bad reputation yet yelled out to all: “Hey! Unto you a child is born!”
This Advent let us be completely open and fidgety with anticipation in our waiting for God to surprise us. Let us come just as we are and humbly bring the “hams” of our lives to present to Jesus.
Yes indeed Gladys, the Lord has certainly done it this very day! The time for singing, dancing and joy is near.
