SCRIPTURE: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”[Psalms 119:105 (NIV)]
There are 22 lamps in our home. They are all different sizes and shapes…some sit on tables while others have their base on the floor. They are turned on in a variety of ways…some it is a mere touch while others require turning the knob or pulling the string. They have different strengths to match the jobs they are called to do…a small illumination to light the bowels of the night or a bright beam for reading.
Their job is to be “a lamp to our feet and a light to our path” when darkness falls. Two things are common with all of them. If they are going to do their work it is necessary for them to be connected to a source of power…electricity. Also, they must have a bulb of some strength to let the light shine. If there is no bulb to shine, there is no light regardless of how good the connection.
In Psalms 119:105, we are told that the word of the Lord is “a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”-present with us to illuminate the many roads of life...mountain tops and valleys. Like the lamp, we can only experience this illumination when we are securely plugged into the source…the Words of Jesus Christ. We can only be a light in the world for others when our lamp has a bulb in the socket. Advent and the anticipation of the coming Savior is the perfect time to check our plug and our bulb. How secure is our connection? How bright is our bulb? It is easy to get caught up in the “busyness” of the roads of life and forget the source of our strength that let’s our light shine.
PRAYER: Dearest Lord Jesus, Help me to secure my connection with you and your word as my source of power and let my light shine brightly to help light someone’s path. Amen
