SCRIPTURE: The People Walked in Darkness”…Except for Moses!?[John 8:1]
Someone recently asked reflectively “I wonder how many people passed by the burning bush in the desert before Moses without noticing that the bush wasn’t being consumed.  There is no indication that anyone actually did, but I’m pretty sure that I would have been too busy or preoccupied to notice.
I recently attended a workshop on “Lectio Divina  in Nature”  at Lake  Junaluska as the seasons were changing. Lectio Divina is normally a spiritual practice involving a brief passage of scripture, but in this session participants were invited to walk the same very short nature trail three times, once for an overview, the second time noticing what “spoke to us”, and the third time revisiting  that one leaf, outcropping, blossoming branch, rock ….the one that we had just noticed in round two…..and spending time with it. Afterward the dozen or so of us  shared: about rebirth, about shelter, about leaves of all colors, sizes and shapes going back to the earth  to nourish new life. What we all noticed in the sharing  was the diversity of experience and lessons learned. We had each passed by the other dozen or so miracles that spoke to someone else at least twice. ”Walking in darkness?”
In this busy season let us not miss the light of God trying to get our attention in the craziness. Let us not miss the chance to see the tiny miracles or hear the cry of the needy, or lose out on the chance to bring the light of hope, love, joy, and peace, of the four advent candles wherever there is darkness.
PRAYER: Gracious creator spirit: May we heed the quiet voice that calls us to reflect the light of that first fire…. as we lighten someone’s burden by carrying it for a little while, as we enlighten our leaders about justice, as we brighten someone’s difficult dark path by walking a short way with them, and as we encourage others in the endeavor to   “punch holes in the darkness” of pain, hunger, fear and hatred.
