Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scipture Email Devotion for Thursday, 4 December 2104
SCRIPTURE: The Lord is my light and my salvation.  Should I fear anyone?  The Lord is a fortress protecting my life. Should I be frightened of anything?[Psalm 27:1 (CEB)]
In February 2014, I spent three days in the hospital, being treated for very high blood pressure that could’ve led to a stroke.
There were many weeks of rest, taking medications that curtailed many activities I enjoyed so much, and changing some old dietary habits.  Even knowing what I had to do to improve my health, I was still afraid.
I went with a group of United Methodists in Marion County to Orlando, to hear Adam Hamilton give a talk about the Bible.  After reading many of Hamilton’s books, seeing and hearing him in person was wonderful treat.  It also inspired me to pick up my Bible again, in search of some divine motivation for my recovery.
In Psalm 27, David put his trust in the Lord, who was his light and salvation. Because of Jesus, the words in Verse 1 remain true today, even as I continue the long road to recovery.
While I’m still restricted in some activities, I can indulge in some light walking and short bicycle trips.  I’m thankful for friends in several places who continue to pray for me, and the technology that keeps me connected to them.  I’m also thankful that the Lord is “my light and my salvation,” and that I shouldn’t be “frightened of anything.”
PRAYER: Lord, you are our light and salvation.  Through your son’s example, may we not be afraid to share that light with others.  Amen.
