Reflecting God – Embrace Holy Living - Kansas City, Missouri, United States - "Hope In Christ, Our Anchor" Thursday, 15 January 2015 - Scripture: Hebrews 6:13-20"Hope In Christ, Our Anchor" by Paul Martin
In 1830 a letter was received by the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society from missionary John Keightley. He related the story of the conversion of a man who had claimed allegiance to another religion: “I was requested to baptize this [man’s] child. While addressing the parents, before the child was baptized, the father began to tremble, and it was evident he felt the power of God.” The man came for instruction, and “After seeking the Lord with a broken and contrite heart for several months, he has found peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Later a paper shared more of his story: “This man maintained his Christian character unblemished, and was appointed to the office of class-leader in 1838; and in 1839, being a fisherman, he was out at sea one day, and the boat was upset by a gust of wind, and he and another were drowned…he said to his comrades, ‘I am going to glory.’”*
No earthly anchor to grasp; the heavenly was sure. His anchor, his hope was the Rock Christ Jesus![*Charles Marke, Origins of Wesleyan Methodism in Sierra Leone and History of Its Missions, London: Charles H. Kelly, 1913, 39-40.]
Hymn fot today: "The Nachor Holds"
I have journeyed
Through the long, dark night
Out on the open sea
By faith alone
Sight unknown
And yet His eyes were watching me
The anchor holds
Though the ship is battered
The anchor holds
Though the sails are torn
I have fallen on my knees
As I faced the raging seas
The anchor holds
In spite of the storm
I've had visions
I've had dreams
I've even held them in my hand
But I never knew
They would slip right through
Like they were only grains of sand
The anchor holds
Though the ship is battered
The anchor holds
Though the sails are torn
I have fallen on my knees
As I faced the raging seas
The anchor holds
In spite of the storm
I have been young
But I am older now
And there has been beauty
That these eyes have seen
But it was in the night
Through the storms of my life
Oh, that's where God proved
His love to me
The anchor holds
Though the ship is battered
The anchor holds
Though the sails are torn
I have fallen on my knees
As I faced the raging seas
The anchor holds
In spite of the storm
