The Church of the Resurrection United Methodist of Leawood, Kansas, United States eNote from Pastor Adam Hamilton for Friday, 9 January 2015

Friday, 9 January 2015

Dear Resurrection Family,
I hope you are doing great on this very cold morning! On Tuesday of this week I flew to Los Angeles to Judson Studios, the stained glass firm working on the design of the window for the new Leawood sanctuary. This weekend in worship at Leawood I'm going to show a couple of pics from my visit and a couple of samples of glass pieces related to our window. More about what I saw and learned at the end of this note.
This weekend we'll be continuing in our series of sermons on Half-Truths. 81% of young adults in a national survey identified as one of the scriptures they knew by heart: "God helps those who help themselves." There's only one problem - it's not in the Bible! This is a great example of a half-truth. There is important truth in this statement, but thankfully, it misses the whole truth about God and who God helps, and it can lead to a mindset in our faith that is not healthy. We'll look at the truth in this statement, and where the statement misses the mark. I think you'll find the message helpful, inspiring and meaningful. It's going to be a great weekend in worship!
Did you know that in 2014 we had 450 people who attended worship at Resurrection 90% of the time or more? I want to commend each of these for their commitment to be in worship either physically present or online. We have a small gift for each of these, but they won't be available for a couple of weeks - we'll keep you posted. I've listed at the end of this email all of those recorded in our database as having 90% or greater worship attendance. If you missed less than 6 times last year, but you don't see your name, it may be because you did not sign in, or it could be because we could not read your handwriting, or simple human error on the part of someone entering attendance. So, if you are certain you missed less than 6 weekends last year, and we're in error, please email my assistant, Sue Thompson, atsue.thompson@cor.org.
I want to encourage each of you to get an "A" in worship attendance in 2015. That would mean missing less than 6 times. When you are sick or out of town, you can always join us online - register your attendance online and this will count. Why do I want you to get an A in worship attendance? It is a sign of your commitment to Christ and of your priorities in life, and God is honored by your worship. At the same time in worship we encounter God and our faith is deepened, and we are empowered for serving God in the world. In worship I am reminded of who God is and who he wants me to be.
Monday and Tuesday night this coming week is Resurrection Night at the Movies. We're going to see the movie Selma about the march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. The film captures the story of the events leading up to, and after, what became known as Bloody Sunday. Click here to see the trailer for the film. Below are the times, come when you can, but if you are able, join us for the showing that corresponds to your worship time. Tickets will be available after worship throughout the weekend or until sold out:
  • Monday, Jan. 12, 6:30 pm show: Sunday 7:45 am and Sunday 9 am worship
  • Monday, Jan. 12, 7 pm show: Vibe and Saturday 5 pm worship
  • Tuesday, Jan. 13, 6:30 pm show: Sunday 10:45 am worship
  • Tuesday, Jan. 13, 7 pm show: Sunday 5 pm worship
I'm excited about our All Church Gathering coming up this month. This is our annual fellowship dinner, business meeting and look ahead to where God is leading the church in the coming years. Dinner is from 5 to 6, and then we'll move into the sanctuary to vote on our 2015 budget, to approve four new candidates from our congregation who are pursuing ordained ministry, and to elect officers and review my compensation for 2015. Then it really gets exciting. We'll hear about some exciting news at our campuses, see the building plans for Resurrection West, and we'll have the final vote required in order to break ground next month on the Leawood sanctuary. We'll unveil the stained glass window design (you'll see bits and pieces this weekend, but at The Gathering we'll share the entire window, actual size. We'll hear about a future Resurrection campus in south Johnson County and there's much more. It is going to be an awesome gathering. Everyone is welcome, but you need to register. There's no cost, though donations will be accepted for supper (pasta and salad this year). Click here to register for the 2015 All Church Gathering!
I thought I'd tell you a bit more about Judson Studios, our stained glass designer and fabricator. Judson is one of the leading stained glass window companies in the world. They were founded in 1897 by the dean of the USC School of Fine Arts. Their work is seen in the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, in the Los Angeles Cathedral and hundreds of other churches. They are currently completing a commission to design and install 2,200 stained glass panels for the new Shanghai Disneyland.
For our project they are using three glass techniques: painting on colored glass, glass etching and glass fusing. Seeing their work in LA left me convinced that this window will be magnificent. Stained glass and natural light were two of the most important elements our congregation indicated they hoped would be in the permanent sanctuary. I believe you'll be pleased and you'll find this window proclaims the gospel, it will draw non-religious people to want to come to the church to see it, and it will foster a deeper sense of worship. I asked David Judson how long the windows should last. Because our window will be protected from the elements - separated from the clear glass exterior window by several feet of space, he indicated that this window could last hundreds and hundreds of years.
Okay, I've got to run. Below is the list of the 450 people from all of our campuses who were in worship more than 90% of the time last year. Thank you to each of you for your faithfulness in worship!
See you this weekend!
Adam
