Pastor Molly, preaching
God's Calling
8:30am
in the Epworth Lounge 9:30am Forum with Pastor Molly: A Report from Lima, Peru in Epworth Lounge 10:30am in the Sanctuary
Sunday's Scripture:
1 Samuel 3:1-20
Scripture Text 1 Samuel 3: The Lord Speaks to Samuel
3 1-2 Samuel served the Lord by helping Eli the priest, who was by that time almost blind. In those days, the Lord hardly ever spoke directly to people, and he did not appear to them in dreams very often. But one night, Eli was asleep in his room, 3 and Samuel was sleeping on a mat near the sacred chest in the Lord’s house. They had not been asleep very long[a] 4 when the Lord called out Samuel’s name.
“Here I am!” Samuel answered. 5 Then he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. What do you want?”
“I didn’t call you,” Eli answered. “Go back to bed.”
Samuel went back.
6 Again the Lord called out Samuel’s name. Samuel got up and went to Eli. “Here I am,” he said. “What do you want?”
Eli told him, “Son, I didn’t call you. Go back to sleep.”
7 The Lord had not spoken to Samuel before, and Samuel did not recognize the voice. 8 When the Lord called out his name for the third time, Samuel went to Eli again and said, “Here I am. What do you want?”
Eli finally realized that it was the Lord who was speaking to Samuel. 9 So he said, “Go back and lie down! If someone speaks to you again, answer, ‘I’m listening, Lord. What do you want me to do?’”
Once again Samuel went back and lay down.
10 The Lord then stood beside Samuel and called out as he had done before, “Samuel! Samuel!”
“I’m listening,” Samuel answered. “What do you want me to do?”
11 The Lord said:
Samuel, I am going to do something in Israel that will shock everyone who hears about it! 12 I will punish Eli and his family, just as I promised. 13 He knew that his sons refused to respect me,[b] and he let them get away with it, even though I said I would punish his family forever. 14 I warned Eli that sacrifices or offerings could never make things right! His family has done too many disgusting things.
15 The next morning, Samuel got up and opened the doors to the Lord’s house. He was afraid to tell Eli what the Lord had said. 16 But Eli told him, “Samuel, my boy, come here!”
“Here I am,” Samuel answered.
17 Eli said, “What did God say to you? Tell me everything. I pray that God will punish you terribly if you don’t tell me every word he said!”
18 Samuel told Eli everything. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord, and he will do what’s right.”
The Lord Helps Samuel
19 As Samuel grew up, the Lord helped him and made everything Samuel said come true. 20 From the town of Dan in the north to the town of Beersheba in the south, everyone in the country knew that Samuel was truly the Lord’s prophet.[Footnotes:
3.3 They. . . long: The Hebrew text has “The lamp was still burning.” An olive oil lamp would go out after a few hours if the wick was not adjusted.

John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for 1 Samuel 3:1-20
Verse 1
[1] And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
Before Eli — That is, under his inspection and direction.
Word — The word of prophecy, or the revelation of God's will to and by the prophets.
Precious — Rare or scarce, such things being most precious in mens' esteem, whereas common things are generally despised.
Open vision — God did not impart his Mind by way of vision or revelation openly, or to any public person, to whom others might resort for satisfaction, though he might privately reveal himself to some pious persons for their particular direction. This is premised, as a reason why Samuel understood not, when God called him once or twice.
Verse 2
[2] And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
His place — In the court of the tabernacle.
Verse 3
[3] And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
Went out — Before the lights of the golden candlestick were put out in the morning.
Verse 7
[7] Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.
Did not know — He was not acquainted with God in that extraordinary or prophetical way. And this ignorance of Samuel's served God's design, that his simplicity might give Eli the better assurance of the truth of God's call, and message to Samuel.
Verse 10
[10] And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Came and stood — Before, he spake to him at a distance, even from the holy oracle between the cherubim: but now, to prevent all farther mistake, the voice came near to him, as if the person speaking had been standing near him.
Verse 12
[12] In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
In that day — In that time which I have appointed for this work, which was about twenty or thirty years after this threatning. So long space of repentance God allows to this wicked generation.
When I begin, … — Tho' this vengeance shall be delayed for a season, to manifest my patience, and incite them to repentance; yet when once I begin to inflict, I shall not desist 'till I have made a full end.
Verse 13
[13] For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
Restrained them not — He contented himself with a cold reproof, and did not punish, and effectually restrain them. They who can, and do not restrain others from sin, make themselves partakers of the guilt. Those in authority will have a great deal to answer for, if the sword they bear be not a terror to evil-doers.
Verse 14
[14] And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
Have sworn — Or, I do swear: the past tense being commonly put for the present in the Hebrew tongue.
Unto — Or, concerning it.
Purged — That is, the punishment threatened against Eli and his family, shall not he prevented by all their sacrifices, but shall infallibly be executed.
Verse 15
[15] And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.
Doors — Altho' the tabernacle, whilst it was to be removed from place to place in the wilderness, had no doors, but consisted only of curtains, and had hangings before the entrance, instead of doors; yet when it was settled in one place, as now it was in Shiloh, it was enclosed within some solid building, which had doors and posts, and other parts belonging to it.
Feared — The matter of the vision or revelation, partly from the reverence he bore to his person, to whom he was loth to be a messenger of such sad tidings; partly, lest if he had been hasty to utter it, Eli might think him guilty of arrogancy or secret complacency in his calamity.
Verse 17
[17] And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
God do so, … — God inflict the same evils upon thee, which I suspect he hath pronounced against me, and greater evils too.
Verse 18
[18] And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
It is the Lord — This severe sentence is from the sovereign Lord of the world, who hath an absolute right to dispose of me and all his creatures; who is in a special manner the ruler of the people of Israel, to whom it properly belongs to punish all mine offences; whose chastisement I therefore accept.
Verse 19
[19] And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
Fail, … — That is, want its effect: God made good all his predictions. A metaphor from precious liquors, which when they are spilt upon the ground, are altogether useless.
Verse 20
[20] And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.
From Dan, … — Thro' the whole Land, from the northern bound Dan, to the southern, Beersheba; which was the whole length of the Land.
Sermon Story "God Calls Then and Now" by Gary Lee Parker with Scripture for Sunday, 18 January 2015
Wow! Samuel was miraculous conceived through the prayers of his mother because his mother was childless. Now, Samuel has been working for the Lord God under the priest Eli for a number of years and sleeping in the church. Remember when the parsonage for the pastor and their family was connected to the church building? This may have not been the case, but it could have been. Now, Samuel realized after working for Eli for a number of years that the Word of God has been absent for a number of years as well as Eli's sons were abusing their priestly office. Samuel was lying down to go to sleep and he heard someone calling his name. Now, he really did not know God at this time so he assumed it was Eli calling him. Samuel arose and went to Eli saying to him Master you called me. Eli did not call him and told Samuel to go back to bed and go to sleep. This happened two other times and on the third time, Eli realized that the Lord God was calling Samuel and he told Samuel to go lay down and if he heard the voice again to simply say speak Lord for Your servant is listening. Samuel did and the Lord God called Samuel and began telling him that because of the sins of Eli's sons and Eli not punishing them, the priestly family would no longer exist in the family since they inherited the status because they were descendants of Aaron. Samuel listened to God and went back to sleep. When Samuel awoke the next morning beginning to perform his daily duties and Eli called him, Eli spoke to Samuel and said that he should tell him eveything God told him leaving nothing out or the punishment will happen to him as well Samuel told Eli everything and Eli responded that God is God and He can do anything he wanted. How would you have responded if you were Samuel to the voice calling your name? Would you tell Eli everything that God told you even though it was bad news for Eli and his sons? How do you understand this call from God to Samuel especially since everybody in Israel began to know you were God's prophet? Imagine now that you are riding in your car and you hear God's voice to come to Him and prepare for pastoral ministry or some other ministry. You respond that you will even though God was calling you to be a pastor to the people who are marginalized in the church and society. You remember many pastors at that time and before you who were either discredited or treated as second-class pastors because they were reaching out to the marginalized and not the middle class and above people of society and the church. You are fearful because you were raised in a Welfare home by a single mother and also was born with a speech impediment. You move on away from school and enter the military, pursue you last year of college, get married, have a child, begin to prepare for pastoral ministry through the church's course of study then divorce strikes your home. Through this divorce and gaining full physical custody and legal custody of your child who his developmentally delayed you prepare and become a teacher. God is still calling you for pastoral ministry to the people who are marginalized. You leave you highest paying job as a teacher you ever had moving half way across country to study at a seminary. During this time, your child is hit by a car and almost dies, he struggle with taking care of your son and earning a living while studying for your seminary degree. You hear God's call to prepare a ministry to educate or re-educate clergy and laity to fully include people who are differently abled as laity or clergy in God's church. For some reason, you are not recognize by your church for the ordination track to become an elder as a pastor. You still hear God's call and desire to have this God vision fulfilled. What do you do? How do you keep your hope and faith in God's working through you? Where you give up or keep the faith in God's action?

Grateful for the Children in our Church
I am so excited about the energy and excitement that's growing in our children's ministry these days; if you were at 10:30 worship last Sunday, when children's SundaySchool began for the year, you may have noticed the energy of all the children as they came into worship at communion time. It's been a joy to begin to know several of the new families who've been coming regularly, and I look forward to getting to welcome them further into our church life. Now, we're dealing with the challenges I most love to deal with in the church: needing more volunteers because we have more kids inSunday School.
Having kids around church fills me with hope. I know that we needed to be raising young people in the life of our congregation for the sake of our future. But I also know that we need them for our present time. If any scripture passage makes that message especially clear, it's the story we'll read in church this Sunday: the story of the calling of Samuel. Still a child, he was the one to whom God chose to speak, and as he became a prophet, he would have many more important messages to speak to his people. I hope you will join me in remembering this story, in sharing joy at the children in our midst, and in listening carefully for what God may be speaking to us, through our kids. Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
Please note that the Church office will be closed Monday, January 19 to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

We are grateful for the generous contributions of so many of you, supporting in our ministries in 2014.
We ended the year just over $1,000 short of our $490,000 budget; even with this small deficit, we can celebrate the ministries enabled by our budget, and all that's made possible by your giving. This is an amazing thing we are doing together! We were not, however, able to pay 100% of our apportionments to the Annual Conference, our giving share in the ministry of the United Methodist Church in our region, nation and world. We hope to stretch ourselves toward a goal of meeting these askings and obligations in the coming year. As we move into 2015, we have adopted a budget with only a modest total increase; to fulfill our budget and commitment, we will seek even deeper and broader support. It is not too late to make a pledge of financial giving, either with the card that is in our pew pockets or via our website. Most importantly, it is now a great time to make a priority of giving to the church in our own personal and family budgets--to choose regular giving as a part of our monthly finances. Thanks for your generosity and support, for your involvement and prayers. |

The UMC recommends that at least 25% but, preferably 50%, of a congregation serve in leadership roles in order to maintain a healthy vital church. Think about that.... That’s ½ of us! That’s 1 out of 2 of us! Are you already serving God in a leadership role? Are you feeling a nudge to be more involved? I am thankful to be part of this healthy, vital congregation and I long for it to continue. We have many congregants living out God’s leadership call, helping guide us in the UMC mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Yet, I am sure there are more of you interested in some training to guide you in this mission as well.
If you are feeling a nudge from God to be more involved (or if you are already involved), please join me at a one day UMC Training Conference at Holman UMC on Feb 7th. This Conference is intended for both current and emerging leaders. If you are interested but not sure of your topic, take a look at this flyer and talk to Molly or me. We would love to help you think about the direction God may be leading you. There are enough topics that there’s bound to be something for everyone. Register by January 20, 2015 for just $10. After the 20th, the fee is $20. Registration includes lunch. And, if you let me know you’re coming, perhaps we can carpool!

Rehearsals are on Wednesdayevenings, from 7:30-9pm in the Choir Room. Everyone's welcome. Come share your gifts and be a part of some amazing music-making to glorify God. |
