Matumelo Seiiso was expecting her third baby last fall. But living in Nkau, Lesotho—a remote mountain village—nothing was easy for her. The nearest clinic was several hours away on foot.
Then, late in Seiiso's pregnancy, she began to bleed profusely. If not for her maternal health assistant, Mamopeli Chabana, she might have faced the emergency frightened and alone. And Gary, it could have been tragic.
Instead, Chabana traveled with Seiiso to the closest clinic, supported by PIH. Trained nurses and midwives assisted her high-risk delivery. And today, in honor of Mother's Day, we're thrilled to share this photo of Seiiso's baby girl, Lineo:

Your consistent support enabled health care that saved Seiiso's—and Lineo's—lives. And Gary, we're so grateful.
But across Lesotho, countless mothers are less fortunate.
That's because Lesotho is remote. Health care is scarce. Poverty runs rampant. And mountains cover more than half the land—becoming deadly obstacles between women and health care. Last year alone, 20,000 women died in pregnancy and childbirth. Few nations are more dangerous for expectant mothers.
With supporters from around the world, we're able to fight back every day—training more maternal health assistants, equipping more safe clinics, and identifying more pregnant women in need.
This Mother's Day, we wanted to reach out and say THANK YOU—for supporting this work for mothers in Lesotho, Haiti, and everywhere we work.
With best wishes for a wonderful day,
The Team at PIH
