Resurrection West,
This Sunday we will celebrate Mother’s day in worship! More than that, we will celebrate all women and the impact they’ve had upon our lives. Many of you submitted pictures, which will be shared in a special musical piece our worship arts team has been developing. Pastor Adam will also be preaching about the moms who met with Jesus! This will be a day of inspiring word and moving music as we gather to worship at 9am, 10:45am, or 5pm. A reminder you might consider worshiping at the 5pm service. In our two morning services we average 300-350 (or more), where we average half of that at 5pm. Our KiDSCOR Sunday School has grown on Sunday evenings to sometimes have more than 30 kids inSunday School. It’s exciting to see many families with children finding a home at the 5pm. We are in the planning stages now for adding a fourth worship service when we open the phase II expansion later this year.
Many of you have been asking me what it takes to become a member of Resurrection West. The answer is to come to “coffee with the pastors” on Sunday afternoon may 22nd, 2:30-4:30pm.Childcare is available and you can register at cor.org/west/coffee, but we always have room for walk-ins. You will learn more about the church, get to know Pastor Chris and myself, review membership expectations, and share in some sweets.   • MEGA MISSION – SPRING 2016! Saturday, May 7. Meet at 8:45am at Resurrection West for a brief time of breakfast snacks, coffee, instructions and prayer. Then, serve in one of our five local opportunities, including:
  1. Packaging diapers at Happy Bottoms
  2. Sorting used LEGOS for children in-need through The Giving Brick at the RezWest Mission Center
  3. Sorting and organizing donations at Mission Southside or Turnstyles Thrift Store
  4. Serving at Rose Brooks Center, which provides emergency shelter for women and children.
  • All ages are welcome and all are invited to wear a MEGA MISSION t-shirt - extras will be available. Due to the specific number of volunteers needed at each location, sign-ups are required ASAP! Register at cor.org/west/megamission.
  • Learn, Grow and Serve with Building Better Moms - Did you know Building Better Moms is a national program that originated at The Church of the Resurrection? Since its beginning, BBM has brought women together to grow spiritually through opportunities to serve and learn. Registration opens this weekend for 2016-17 BBM. For more information, go to cor.org/west/bbm or stop by the BBM table in the entry after Sunday worship services. 
  • Dayton Moore, General Manager of the World Champion Kansas City Royals, will be speaking at Resurrection West on Saturday, June 11, from 8-9:30am. This special guest appearance is open to any of the men in our community and is in coordination with the current Saturday Morning Men’s Group study, More Than A Season. A catered breakfast will be available for purchase. 
  • Resurrection West Blood Drive – Monday, May 16, 1-7 pm. Share the gift of life! Anyone who is healthy, at least 16 years old (under 18 needs parental consent) and weighs at least 110 pounds may donate blood. Make appointment at savealifenow.org, enter sponsor code “rezwest.” 
  • Resurrection West Sports Camp and Vacation Bible Camp, “Meet the Royals”! Two great opportunities for kids this summer, one amazing week of fun! Registration is now open for RezWest Sports Camp and RezWest VBC. Both camps will take place June 20-24; Sports camp (Basketball, Soccer, Flag Football & Cheerleading) will be held in the morning, followed by VBC “Meet the Royals” in the afternoon. Register for one or both of these events. A supervised “sack lunch” time will be held for those who participate in both activities. We hope to help hundreds of kids grow in faith, wisdom and friendship through these programs, so we will need many volunteers - youth and adults! All parents who volunteer for VBC and have children younger than kindergarten will be able to register their little ones in early childhood VBC or nursery.   • Catch the Wave of Fun! Join KiDSCOR Team Summer! Be a part of helping kids search out their faith this summer! No experience necessary – just be ready to have some fun with the kids. We are looking for parents, youth and other adults who would be willing to serve two Sundays in KiDSCOR or at one of our awesome summer camps.   • RezWest Mission Trip to Malawi – January 12-22, 2017. Travel in mission with Pastor Jason to Malawi! Serve with our Malawian brothers and sisters as we reach out to the community through a variety of projects. This is an exciting way to step out of your comfort zone and affect the lives of so many. Included in the trip is a cultural safari experience you won’t want to miss. Go to to cor.org/content/malawi-serve-trips for more information. 
  • 5th - 7th Grade Summer Mission Trip, July 11-15 - Join us for a week of serving others, growing closer to Christ and having a lot of fun! We are heading to Lawrence to serve through non-profits, including homeless ministries, housing projects, food/shelter non-profits and much more. Register by June 1st to guarantee your spot.   • Family mission trip to Omaha, Nebraska, July 21-23. This will be a great way to instill the value of service to God and others into your kid’s lives. Join Pastor Jason, Christie Walker - Director of Children’s Ministries, and their families to serve. Registration will open for this mission experience for parents and kids K-5th grade next week.   • The Clothing Ministry is in great need of drivers to deliver donations to our ministry partners, including Grace United Methodist Church, Salvation Army and Village UMC. If you would like to volunteer as a driver and are able to make deliveries twice a month, please contact Rich Trump at rstrump@att.net. 
  • Pre-Baptism Class – Tuesday, May 10, 5:15 pm, RezWest Sanctuary. Holy Baptism is a covenant between an individual and God. All are welcome to receive this sacrament in the United Methodist Church. If you are considering baptism, please attend this class with Pastor Jason Gant. Register atcor.org/west/baptisms.   • Holy Land Trip – Nov 14-23. Join Resurrection West pastor Jason Gant and Resurrection Blue Springs pastor Penny Elwood on this amazing 10-day tour, Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus. Information brochures are available at the RezWest front desk. Contact Debbie.Dietz@cor.org with questions. 
Finally, I will be preaching a three-week series beginning May 29th called “Adventure: living the abundant life”. My hope is to unpack what it means to live the abundant life Jesus spoke of. We will look at biblical stories of people called to certain adventures and others who fell into them. We'll focus on what I’m calling the “never principles”: never giving up, never alone, and never stop! Since this series will kick-off Memorial Day weekend, I am hoping to share some “never giving up” stories and testimony that may be here at West among our veterans. Did you serve your country? Do you have testimony of how God carried you through a difficult time or situation in your military service? Would you be willing to share your story with me? Please let me know by simply replying to this email. I believe we have allot to learn about never giving up in the disciple John Mark’s story. He penned the Gospel of Mark, the first Gospel written and often characterized as the Gospel of action! John Mark’s story is filled with the human condition, support from fellow disciples, and a powerful story of call and service to God. I look forward to preaching into it!
I’m off to write the teaching lesson for tomorrow morning men’s study on a chapter in Dayton Moore’s book, More Than A Season. I’m so excited he’s coming to speak and want to encourage you to spread the word with guys not to miss this event on June 11th. Allen Henning, one of our most committed servant leaders here, hoped to have Dayton come so he reached out and the rest is history. Way to go Allen!
