"Global Mission announces new NCM director"
Global Mission has announced Nell Becker Sweeden as the new director of Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (NCM).
Becker Sweeden has served in various roles within NCM during the past 12 years, most recently as education coordinator. Her areas of expertise include international development, educational initiatives, and theology. While serving as education coordinator, Becker Sweeden was also assistant professor of theology and Richard B. Parker co-chair of Wesleyan Theology at George Fox Evangelical Seminary. Her recent accomplishments include authoring the book Church on the Way: Hospitality and Migration.
Becker Sweeden has a strong call and passionate heart for compassionate ministry.
“I am fascinated by how Jesus’ compassion is described in the Scriptures as an urge in his gut, or a compulsion, to respond with love to people who are suffering,” Becker Sweeden said. “A key piece of this for me is continually placing myself in the margins of our world to live out Christlikeness within communities and through relationships.”
Through NCM, Becker Sweeden seeks to be a part of God’s people — the church — who are faithful and active in living out God’s love in the world.
Becker Sweeden studied Spanish and theology at Point Loma Nazarene University and holds a Master of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary. Additionally, she completed her Doctor of Philosophy at Boston University in practical theology with specializations in Wesleyan theology and church and society. Becker Sweeden is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene.
“I am deeply appreciative of the gift that Nell has been to our church,” said Verne Ward, Global Mission director. “She has the unique ability to bring clarity around the connection of what we believe theologically and how we lovingly serve the world. This practical engagement demonstrates not only Nell’s training, but also her genuine heart for the church and relentless pursuit of the heart of Christ.”
Becker Sweeden recognizes that compassionate response in the face of suffering and injustice is at the heart of our Nazarene identity.
“I look forward to working alongside churches to help facilitate transformational ministry in their communities,” Becker Sweeden said. “NCM does not exist outside the church, but through local congregations who are seeking to live out their faith within specific communities. My prayer is that together we will continue to weave our faithful response to God’s love for the sake of the world.”
Becker Sweeden will relocate with her family to the Kansas City area this September.

"Gas explosion damages Philippine church, injures 1"
Around 1:30 p.m. local time Monday, a gas explosion was reported at the Pines City Church of the Nazarene in Baguio City, Philippines.
One worker, Frank*, received extensive burns and has been hospitalized. A pregnant church member had just exited the room when the explosion occurred and was unhurt.
Initial reports indicate that there was possibly a gas leak from a propane bottle emitting fumes and when a worker lit the stove in the kitchen, the fumes ignited.
“It was like a grenade went off in the church,” said one of the church members. “The ceiling came down — windows and doors were blown out.”
Prayer is requested for Frank and the rest of the church family at Pines City Church of the Nazarene.
More information will be added as it becomes available.

"Nazarene church celebrates 70 years in Cuba"

Cuba Nazarene Theological Seminary celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Church of the Nazarene in Cuba on May 26, hosting more than 1,500 people. Guests included more than 140 pastors, dozens of Nazarenes leaders, believers from different denominations, a Work & Witness team from Oregon, USA, officials from Cuba's Office of Attention to Religious Affairs, and the children of Cuba's pioneer Nazarene missionaries, Norma Brunson, Leon Henrick, Delia Prescott, and Robert Prescott.
Those assembled celebrated with songs of praise and thanksgiving to the Lord led by a choral group. Cuba district superintendents Leonel Lopez Ortiz and Luis Batista also participated. Retired pastors and others who have been part of the history and of building the church in Cuba received special awards.

"It was of great joy to hear the voices of the children of the first American missionaries and some of their testimonies of how the Nazarene work in Cuba started," Otoniel Fernández said. "Also the pleasant visit of Sister Rosa Saenz together with her husband, Mesoamerica Regional Director Dr. Luis Carlos Saenz, who shared the Word of God. The joy could be seen on the face of each guest. It will long remain in our memories how meaningful it has been to reach our 70th anniversary. We hope that with God's help we can reach another decade where the Church of the Nazarene in Cuba goes 'by the old Path in the Way of Holiness.'"[Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica Region]

"Indiana ministry center supports unique partnership to combat inner city problems"
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department patrolman Adam Perkins, left, and CORE paramedic Shane Hardwick, right, work together as part of the Shalom Project, a community policing/health effort led by the Shepherd Community Center.
A woman hangs out of her truck's driver’s side window, attempting to flag down the police cruiser rolling down East Washington Street. She needs help. She wants the officer to pull over.
Police patrolman Adam Perkins, with paramedic Shane Hardwick riding shotgun, steers the cruiser onto the next side street, pulling up behind the woman’s truck. She exits and marches back to the car.
Without an introduction, she launches into her story: She’s on a mission to find her daughter, who is strung out on heroin. The daughter is somewhere in the neighborhood, and there’s a warrant for her arrest. The mother wants her daughter found and put in jail, fearing it's the only way to save her. “I had a dream last night that she died,” the woman says. “And she did die a month ago.”
...
Getting to know the back stories of people in need is a key to success for Perkins and Hardwick, a unique public safety pairing in Indianapolis. Unlike just about everywhere else in the country, where cops ride in police cars and paramedics ride in ambulances or firetrucks, these guys ride together as partners.
The idea was the brainchild of people at the Shepherd Community Center, which has been fighting poverty on the east side for 30 years. A year ago, Shepherd launched a new effort, called the Shalom Project, a thrust into the neighborhood that involves efforts to get at the root causes of poverty, crime and despair. With support from a number of local foundations and supporters, it added five new positions, including people to help the neighbors get jobs, budget their money and navigate the often confounding landscape of social services. Key to the initiative was the hiring of a community police officer who would be dedicated solely to the neighborhood. All in all, Shalom is a $300,000 annual expense.

Myitkyina, Myanmar

"W&W team experiences miraculous abundance during Myanmar trip"
A Work & Witness team from Bethel Church of the Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho, USA, arrived in Myanmar May 21. Shortly after reaching Myitkyina in the northern part of the country, the team began engaging with the local people.
Each day, around 100 children came from surrounding Nazarene churches and communities to participate in the 5-day Vacation Bible School the team had prepared. The kids enjoyed games, lessons, and interaction with the team members, eagerly awaiting their arrival each morning.
The team brought 100 pairs of The Shoe That Grows to be handed out to local children on the last day of VBS. The shoes have tire rubber for soles and can last years because they can continue to be adjusted to accommodate about five years of growth and change in foot size.
“We brought 100 pairs of these shoes from the states. Since the shoes come in small and large, the team members handling the VBS had been sizing up the feet of the kids in attendance during the week, as well as counting the number of attendees.
The packs (filled with goodies, toys, and The Shoes That Grow) were prepared, counted, and places were readied for handing out these bags.
After the start of the JESUS film, additional kids found there way into the church to watch… We lost count of how many to expect. The JESUS film ended and Sam [missionary District Superintendent] spoke to the kids, asking how many had made a decision for Jesus for the first time. We estimate that over 80 percent of the crowd raised their hands! Praise Jesus!
Sam then showed the kids a pair of the shoes and explained how these shoes would grow with their feet. He then asked the children to line up by size. It becomes obvious very quickly that we are going to be short some bags and shoes, especially for the smaller sized feet. So we manage the kids as best we can by looking at shoe size and shift some to the larger group and we start handing out the packs with the shoes.
In Matthew chapter 14 and again in Luke chapter 9, there are parallel versions of Jesus feeding 5,000 people from two loaves and five fishes. It was reportedly a young boy’s lunch. In Mark chapter 8 there is a similar story of Jesus feeding 4,000 with seven loaves. Whether 4,000 or 5,000, two loaves or seven, when Jesus blesses, there is always an abundance left over.
As the children were given backpacks with shoes, it began to become obvious that we were going to be short. We had counted — numerous times. Team members Eric and Shane counted together. Melinda and Katie counted separately. Those leading VBS, prior to sending the kids to the JESUS film, calculated that we had 71 large sized feet and 33 small. Do the math: we only had 100 sets of shoes. We were going to be short! There was an old man — most likely a grandpa — holding a young girl, wanting a bag for this precious little girl and we were out… none left.
We were trying to explain that she was really too little to wear the shoes anyway. Remember we brought 100 pairs. We had only 90 backpacks prepared. We had kids still standing in line waiting for a backpack and shoes. And we had none. Then Katie, for who knows what reason, looked again at the bags we had used to carry the prepared shoes and packs to be distributed. She found more, including the smaller sized shoes! We re-stocked our distribution locations and continued to give until all had received, including the little girl being held by her grandfather.
Stunned, Katie and Melinda counted the remaining shoes… 21 extra pairs of shoes! We don’t know for sure how many we gave out, perhaps 120 or so. Remember: multiple people counted, multiple times. We only brought 100 pairs from the states. Only 90 backpacks. And we have extra. LEFTOVERS!
Jesus still blesses today in miraculous ways! And I am witness to His blessing and miracle of the shoes for these children of Myitkyina.”[Kirk Bartlow, team member]

The team partnered with JESUS Film Harvest Partners to bring in a set of JESUS Film equipment. Three young men from the local church were trained in how to use the equipment. During the film, more than 50 young people prayed to accept Jesus as their personal Savior.
Included with the equipment were solar panels, which local leadership says will be very useful as most villages where the film will be shown have no electricity.
Throughout the week, the team of 11, along with about eight men from the Rambu Church of the Nazarene, also began painting the church and tiling the floor of the platform.
On May 31, a community dedication of the new church building was held. Hundreds attended from inter-denominational congregations and celebrated the opening of the new Rambu Church of the Nazarene.
Time and time again, team members return from Work & Witness trips stating that it is they who have received the greater blessing.
The Nazarene church people in Myitkyna were incredible. Their hard work, self-sacrifice, feeding us, putting tree-ground makeup on the ladies, laughter, smiles, handshakes, colorful clothing, and serious commitment to the task of reaching people for Christ was an inspiration… It humbled us and gave us a deep love for these special people in both Yangon and Myanmar. The vests they made for each team member at the dedication was a bit overwhelming to the team. Truly, we can never outgive God.[Pastor Jim Franklin, team leader][Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific Region]

Flags of the Nations: Venezuela

"Flags of the Nations: Venezuela"
The Venezuela flag is a tricolor with yellow, blue, and red stripes from top to bottom with a coat of arms and an arc of eight stars at the center. The flag is modeled after the one used by the liberation leader, Francisco de Maranda. Blue represents independence from Spain, red symbolizes courage and the centered stars are symbolic of the seven provinces that supported the revolution.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Venezuela
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Venezuela in 1982.
Venezuela had a population of 29,275,460 in 2015. That same year, Venezuela reported 86 Churches of the Nazarene, all of which had been officially organized. Venezuela has 8,140 total members.
Located on the South America Region, Venezuela has one Phase 3 district, three Phase 2 districts, and one Phase 1 district. For more information about the South America Region, visit samnaz.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.

"Hispanic/Latino National Congress gathers pastors, leaders from across region"

The quadrennial Hispanic/Latino National Congress was held from June 15 to 17 at Southern Nazarene University under the theme "Honoring the past, celebrating the present, anticipating the future: Vision 2020."
"The congress was a wonderful Nazarene family reunion from different USA/Canada Hispanic/Latino ministries and districts," said Roberto Hodgson, Multicultural Ministries director.
The Hispanic Strategy Committee and Casa Nazarena de Publicaciones sponsored the congress. Speakers at the event were General Superintendent Gustavo A. Crocker, retired elder Jose Rodriguez, and Hodgson.

The planning committee worked to organize services, plenary sessions, and workshops to provide a variety of resources for pastors, leaders, and youth as they serve in their unique ministries and contexts. Organizers hoped the congress would inspire and equip the participants to fulfill the mission of the church to make Christlike disciples in the nations.
"The attendance surpassed expectations," Hodgson said. "The goal was 200 participants and final registration was over 270. Glory to God!"
Among the numerous comments from participants were expressions of satisfaction for a useful and inspiring time together.

"MNU partners to provide college experience to developmentally disabled"
MNU President David Spittal and Lakemary President & CEO Gianna Gariglietti sign the agreement to provide the Community Transition Program.
Lakemary Center and MidAmerica Nazarene University are partnering to meet the needs of students diagnosed with certain developmental disabilities through the creation of a two-year, cohort-model certificate program recognized by the U. S. Department of Education. Starting this August, students in the Community Transition Program will spend four semesters taking courses at MNU’s Olathe campus.
The goal of the certificate program is to prepare students for success in the workplace and to provide them with the socialization and maturation that occurs in the college setting. The unique program is the first such certificate partnership between a university and a center servicing the developmentally disabled in the Kansas City metro area.
Fifty percent of the classes will take place in a blended format, meaning students will attend the same class as typically developing college students, under the instruction of MNU faculty. The remaining classes will be held on MNU’s main campus under the direction of Lakemary personnel. Students will attend the program in cohorts of 10 to 15 and groups will start twice a year.
“This is an opportunity to attend college for individuals who would not otherwise have that chance,” said Neil Friesland, MNU professor of education. “These students have similar hopes and dreams as typically developing college students. They want the chance to make and keep friends, learn skills that will help them earn a living, and work toward a special achievement.”
Friesland and Nancy Damron, dean of the School of Education, have worked with Lakemary Center’s staff to create the program.
“We want to be a community resource, and this program is a mission fit,” Damron said. “Our research and experience tell us that parents and their developmentally disabled students want a college experience, they just didn’t have a partner to provide that until now.”
The program will be co-administered by the two organizations. Students will apply through MNU, and Lakemary Center will direct the intake of applicants. Applicants do not need to be currently receiving services through Lakemary in order to apply to the Community Transition Program at MNU.
To assist those interested in the program, there will be an informational meeting for students and families Wednesday, June 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. at MNU in Metz Hall, room 228.

Mount Vernon, Ohio

"Mount Vernon becomes first RCOSAC-validated university with new criteria"
Mount Vernon Nazarene University is the first USA/Canada Nazarene university with all its ordination majors validated by the USA/Canada Regional Course of Study Advisory Committee according to the newly revised ability statements.
The Course of Study Advisory Committee validates Church of the Nazarene ordination education programs for universities, colleges, and seminaries across the U.S. and Canada. They have been doing this on a regular basis for the past 20 years based on ability statements. The original number of ability statements was 79 and RCOSAC chose to reduce the number of ability statements without losing the content. With the new set of 44 ability statements, MVNU submitted paperwork for re-validation that met the new criteria.
Jeanne Serrão, dean of the School of Theology and Philosophy at MVNU, serves on the USA/Canada Course of Study Advisory Committee.
“We are the first USA/Canada Nazarene university, college, or seminary, to get all our programs validated with the new ability statements by the USA/Canada RCOSAC," she said. "It is a huge job to change over to the new ability statements with the paperwork required, but we worked hard and are blazing the trail for our sister institutions."
This past year, five MVNU ordination majors went through the full process and were re-validated for the next 10 years. The Church of the Nazarene's General Board gave final approval in February 2016 to: Children’s Ministries, Youth Ministries, Educational Ministries, Worship Ministry, and Urban Ministry. The last two ordination preparation majors, Pastoral Ministry and Intercultural Studies: Church Ordination Track, are in process for final approval by the General Board in February 2017.[Mount Vernon Nazarene University]
