She bowed down, begging a favor from him. 21 He said to her, “What do you want?” She replied, “Promise that when you become king, these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right and the other on your left.” 22 But Yeshua answered, “You people don’t know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We can.” 23 He said to them, “Yes, you will drink my cup. But to sit on my right and on my left is not mine to give, it is for those for whom my Father has prepared it.”
24 Now when the other ten heard about this, they were outraged at the two brothers. 25 But Yeshua called them and said, “You know that among the Goyim, those who are supposed to rule them become tyrants, and their superiors become dictators. 26 Among you, it must not be like that. On the contrary, whoever among you wants to be a leader must become your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave! 28 For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve — and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

James and John were brothers who followed Jesus. They were also fishermen like Andrew and Peter. Mark 3:17 says that Jesus called James and John "Sons of Thunder."
Our Bible verses for today tell us about a time when the mother of James and John came to Jesus. She said to Jesus, "Promise that one of my sons will sit at your right side in your kingdom and the other at your left" (verse 21b). Jesus replied, "But it is not for me to say who will sit at my right or my left. My Father has decided who will do that" (verse 23a). Then Jesus went on to remind His disciples that they should not be proud and "show their power over the people" (verse 25b). Instead they should be willing to serve others.
Jesus is the perfect example of someone who was willing to give up His life and serve other people. I hope you will be like Him today![Jo Krueger]
"Whoever wants to be first must serve the rest of you like a slave. Do as I did: The Son of Man did not come for people to serve him. He came to serve others and to give his life to save many people." [Matthew 20:27-28]
PRAYER: God, I want to be humble and serve others like Jesus did. In His name. Amen.
