Caregiving in the News
Give thanks with a grateful heart
Times-News | November 20, 2017
"It is appropriate that the month chosen for National Family Caregivers Month is also the one in which we celebrate Thanksgiving. Whether you are on the giving or receiving end of caregiving, I hope you possess an attitude of gratitude. Being thankful for - or in spite of - your situation, has been found to improve your overall physical condition, especially your heart."
The evolution of caregiver resources
Caring.com | November 20, 2017
"Caring for an aging loved one has always been a responsibility that not only requires an immense output of physical and emotional energy, but is often undertaken against a backdrop of competing personal, professional and familial responsibilities. Caregivers face a lot of stress, and are at higher risk of developing chronic illnesses compared to non-caregivers. But it's not all bad news. Over the years, the caregiving landscape in the U.S. has evolved in some remarkable ways, leading to more caregiver resources than ever before."
Medicare, Medicaid and long-term care: your questions answered
Next Avenue | November 17, 2017
"This topic is weighing heavily on the minds of many Americans, and for two good reasons: 70 percent of people 65 and older will need some kind of long-term care eventually and long-term care costs are astronomical. The median annual fee for a private room in a nursing home, for instance, is $97,455 and hiring a home health aide runs roughly $49,000 a year, according to the 2017 Genworth Cost of Care Report."
New Resources for Caregivers
Tools for caregivers - cognitive assessment and brain health
We're always looking for new resources that could help out family caregivers. Recently, we came across The BCAT, a cognitive assessment and brain health company. They've posted a thoughtful blog post about self-care practices for caregivers in recognition of National Family Caregivers Month. While on their website, check out some of the resources they have for caregivers - including educational materials, virtual visits for care recipients, and a calculator that will help you understand how your daily life impacts your brain health.

Falls Prevention Webinar
November 28, 2017 4:00PM ET | Webinar
We're honored to partner with the National Council on Aging on a series of resources for family caregivers of older adults. Many caregivers may not realize that 1 in 4 adults over the age of 65 falls every year, injuring themselves and often exacerbating other conditions of aging. Family caregivers and those at-risk for a fall can be partners and participants in falls prevention. The good news is that falling is not a normal part of aging. The toolkit and other resources for family caregivers will be shared on Tuesday, November 28th at 4:00 PM ET in a national webinar. Register today.
