Caregiving in the News
Markets Insider | November 6, 2017
"EMD Serono, the biopharmaceutical business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, in the US and Canada, announced the results of the Embracing Carers™ international survey highlighting the often-overlooked needs of unpaid caregivers. The survey, released as part of a multi-year initiative by the company, uncovered that nearly half (49%) of unpaid caregivers surveyed have feelings of depression."
Next Avenue (Rita Rubin) | November 9, 2017
"The briefing featuring congressional stories of family caregiving was sponsored by the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) and the John A. Hartford Foundation in partnership with AARP, the Alzheimer's Association and the National Alliance for Caregiving. Its goal was to "raise awareness of the need for action to support and assist family caregivers," and call attention to the recommendations of the 'Families Caring for an Aging America' report, GSA said."
The Times-News | November 6, 2017
"According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, more than 65 million people - almost one-third of the U.S. population - provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during any given year. This responsibility requires a great deal of time and energy. In some situations, it can become a 24-hours a day/7-days a week job. It is fitting that the theme chosen for this year's National Family Caregivers Month (November) is 'Caregiving Around the Clock'."
AARP (Laura Skufca) | November 2017
"AARP conducted a survey among caregivers and care recipients to examine the emotions they experience as well as how their relationship with their loved one may have changed as a result of caregiving. One key finding was that More than half of caregivers (54%) say they have experienced an unexpected joy in caregiving. This most commonly relates to a sense of satisfaction in helping their loved one as well as learning more about the person they are caring for."
The Motley Fool (Michael Douglass) | November 6, 2017
"While much ink has been spilled about how expensive healthcare is in retirement, even the most rigorous numbers (like Fidelity's estimates that healthcare will cost $275,000 per couple retiring today) are based on averages that cannot take into account all the possibilities. In fact, those estimates neglect a major healthcare expense that could dwarf your other costs -- one that, according to BlackRock, 70% of retirees will likely encounter in some form. That's long-term care."
CMS | November 2017
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will be issuing new Medicare cards, starting in April 2018. The cards will be mailed to all newly-eligible and existing beneficiaries, with a statutory deadline of April 2019. The new cards will no longer include SSN numbers, the purpose being to reduce fraud and protect the beneficiary's medical identity. In addition, caregivers will automatically have access to the medical number of their care recipient, which is especially important for Alzheimer's or dementia related caregivers.

We're honored to partner with the National Coalition on Aging on a series of resources for family caregivers of older adults. Many caregivers may not realize that 1 in 4 adults over the age of 65 falls every year, injuring themselves and often exacerbating other conditions of aging. Family caregivers and those at-risk for a fall can be partners and participants in falls prevention. The good news is that falling is not a normal part of aging. The toolkit and other resources for family caregivers will be shared on Tuesday, November 28th at 4:00 PM ET in a national webinar. Stay tuned for the registration link.
