Wear Justice Elevates the Fair Trade Conversation on Campus
This month the campus was buzzing with the CJR's first Wear Justice event. CJR intern Elaine Giles led the event, gathering our largest group of students to date to help put on an event to focus the conversation on the people behind our clothing. Cheap fashion means that people are being exploited for their labor to bring us low prices on our clothes, and Wear Justice was a week-long campaign to raise awareness. Starting with a movie night featuring The True Cost more than 125 students gathered for Ben & Jerry's (fair trade) ice cream and to watch the movie on the lawn under the evening sky.
On Friday, April 13 the Wear Justice Ethical and Sustainable Clothing Fair invited fair trade clothing vendors to campus. Patagonia
headlined the vendors with their new, not yet to market, fair trade wet suit and their Worn Wear Repair Shop, where Patagonia employees repaired clothing and talked to students about sustainability. A giant Clothes Swap was the highlight of the day with students bringing clothes they no longer wear to exchange for another student's clothing. A student group put on a Re-Runway Show, featuring all thrifted clothing ensembles. It was a great day with huge momentum toward helping our campus and student's be more conscious of our consumer choices.

CJR interns and student staff have worked hard this year to elevate the conversation about Fair Trade on campus. From the coffee we drink to the clothes we purchase, we can each have a positive impact on the men and women who harvest our food and produce our products and clothing.

Fair Trade Campaign Posters were designed by CJR intern Gabriela Masuda

and displayed during our Wear Justice event.

Center for Enriching Relationships offers counseling support for Beauty for Ashes Recipients

The CJR supported five students this year with the Beauty for Ashes Scholarship for survivors of human trafficking. Rebuilding your life after the trauma of being trafficked means facing the damage of your exploitation. When CJR staff Kim Berry Jones met a psychologist from the Center for Enriching Relationships (CER) in 2016 a partnership began to form. The CER now works with the CJR to offer greatly subsidized counseling to the students receiving the Beauty for Ashes scholarship. Thanks to their generosity our students now receive the additional support of counseling, a benefit that is bringing life changing results.

kNOw MORE Human Trafficking Awareness & Prevention Curriculum: Creating a Barrier Between Traffickers and our Children
