Weekly eNote from Pastor Jason Gant for Thursday, 26 April 2018 of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection West in Olathe, Kansas, United States "Connection and Community"
Resurrection West,
This Sunday will be a great day of worship as we gather to ask this important question; "What would Jesus say to….Church of the Resurrection?" Pastor Adam will be preaching as we seek to understand God's call and vision to change lives, strengthen churches, and transform the world! This will be a great Sunday to remember who God has called us to be and to better understand where God is calling us to go! I know you have friends that would be interested in hearing this message, so invite them to join you at 8am, 9:30am, 11am, or 5pm.
Many of you commented on the power of last Sunday's offertory song'Dear Hate' by Maren Morris, featuring Vince Gill. I shared Sunday, following Pastor Adam's inspiring message on 'what Jesus would say to gun violence' that Morris wrote the emotional song two days after the mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina in June 2015. You can view and share the 5pm version with Becca and Craig singing on our RezWest Facebook page here. You can also view and share all past RezWest sermons here.
We continue working with our consultants from the Auxano Group who are helping us to form our 2030 vision over the course of this year. This past Sunday Auxano consultants moved throughout all of our campuses assessing ways we might improve our guest experience. They asked the following seven questions;
  • Does our web-site and digital media help guests to know when to leave for worship?
  • Is it clear where to turn into the campus?
  • Will I know where to park when I arrive?
  • Which door will I enter?
  • Can I clearly tell where to take my kids?
  • Do I know where to go for help or information?
  • Do I know which doors to enter for worship?
We are called to reach non religious and nominally-religious people in our purpose here at Resurrection, so these are critical questions to think through. Not only in the way of signage or what is often called ‘passive communication’, but also in the way of warmth or ‘active communication’. People welcoming people! We learned about many places for improvement and will work diligently to do just that, but we also recognized many places where you were excelling at these ideas - especially in the area of warmth!
Our parking attendants were out all day in the rain directing traffic. Greeters were smiling and offering high fives and fist bumps to kiddos as they entered. You held open doors as people entered, which the consultants pointed out as a key approach to hospitality. We were reminded that when a guest comes to our home, we would never expect them to open the door for themselves, so shouldn’t we extend the same warmth at church? Well, you did! I even saw this happening last night as volunteer leaders welcomed teens to rezlife youth group. Way to go! KiDSCOR volunteers helped family’s with kids find their way and ushers gave personal attention to help find seats.
The consultants said the first-time guest often decides whether this is the community for them in the first 11 minutes. It takes allot of courage to walk into a church building for the first-time or for the the first-time in a long time. I hope we continue to be the kind of faith community that cares more about the needs of our guests than our own personal wants. All too often churches find themselves focusing inward rather than outward. I’m so proud to serve here at RezWest because of your desire to be used by God to build a Christian community where non-religious and nominally religious people are becoming deeply committed Christians!
Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday, May 13th and we want to celebrate all the women in our lives; moms, sisters, daughters, etc.Please send us a pic (one per household only) so we can include it in our video montage tribute in Mother’s Day worship. It can be any pic you’d like, as long as she approves it! Send your pic directly to our Director of Worship Arts, Lindsay Hefner, at lindsay.hefner@cor.org
Finally, last Sunday we welcomed 21 new members to our faith community here at RezWest. We are so glad you are here and will invite you to stand and be recognized in all services this Sunday. If you see someone you know, please reach out and welcome them home!
