The Redondo Beach 1st United Methodist Church eNews for Thursday, 31 May 2018: "Youth Sunday, Pass the Mic" Youth Sunday & Youth Banquet: worship at 8:30am and 10:30am.
From Pastor Molly: living their faith
It's Youth Sunday, which means that young people in our church have planned and will lead our worship this week. We get to hear from four of our young leaders who are graduating from high school this year: Bryan Hwang, Taylor Rose, Eunice Tuuholoaki and Grace Tuuholoaki. I look forward to hearing what they have to say, as leaders in our church and community. I'm so grateful that they've been a part of our congregation, learning and giving of themselves in so many ways. (Please note that we have even more graduating seniors this year! Others will share during coming Sundays.)
I feel a great hope for our church and for the world, when I think about these youth and other young people in our congregation. They already live out a passion for the values our church shares: of caring for one another in Christian community, of learning to serve and grow our faith, of responding to the needs of the community and world. I hope you will join me in celebrating this moment in their lives, and supporting them in the days to come. As a parent, I'm especially excited for my young son to get to see the ways these youth are living their faith.
It's also our Youth Banquet, which gives us a chance to see and celebrate what's happening in ministry with young people in our church. I hope you'll plan to join us for lunch. (Details are below!)
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

2 Corinthians 4:5-12
2 Corinthians 4:5 For what we are proclaiming is not ourselves, but the Messiah Yeshua as Lord, with ourselves as slaves for you because of Yeshua. 6 For it is the God who once said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has made his light shine in our hearts, the light of the knowledge of God’s glory shining in the face of the Messiah Yeshua.
7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it will be evident that such overwhelming power comes from God and not from us. 8 We have all kinds of troubles, but we are not crushed; we are perplexed, yet not in despair; 9 persecuted, yet not abandoned; knocked down, yet not destroyed. 10 We always carry in our bodies the dying of Yeshua, so that the life of Yeshua may be manifested in our bodies too. 11 For we who are alive are always being handed over to death for Yeshua’s sake, so that Yeshua’s life also might be manifested in our mortal bodies. 12 Thus death is at work in us but life in you.
 (Complete Jewish Bible).
2 Corinthians 4:5-12
Verse 5
[5] For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.
For — The fault is not in us, neither in the doctrine they hear from us.
We preach not ourselves — As able either to enlighten, or pardon, or sanctify you.
But Jesus Christ — As your only wisdom, righteousness, sanctification.
And ourselves your servants — Ready to do the meanest offices.
For Jesus' sake — Not for honour, interest, or pleasure.
Verse 6
[6] For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
For God hath shined in our hearts — The hearts of all those whom the god of this world no longer blinds. God who is himself our light; not only the author of light, but also the fountain of it.
To enlighten us with the knowledge of the glory of God — Of his glorious love, and of his glorious image.
In the face of Jesus Christ — Which reflects his glory in another manner than the face of Moses did.
Verse 7
[7] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
But we — Not only the apostles, but all true believers.
Have this treasure — Of divine light, love, glory.
In earthen vessels — In frail, feeble, perishing bodies. He proceeds to show, that afflictions, yea, death itself, are so far from hindering the ministration of the Spirit, that they even further it, sharpen the ministers, and increase the fruit. That the excellence of the power, which works these in us, may undeniably appear to be of God.
Verse 8
[8] We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
We are troubled, etc.-The four articles in this verse respect inward, the four in the next outward, afflictions. In each clause the former part shows the "earthen vessels;" the latter, "the excellence of the power." Not crushed - Not swallowed up in care and anxiety.
Perplexed — What course to take, but never despairing of his power and love to carry us through.
Verse 10
[10] Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
Always — Wherever we go.
Bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus — Continually expecting to lay down our lives like him.
That the life also of Jesus might be manifested in our body — That we may also rise and be glorified like him.
Verse 11
[11] For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.
For we who yet live - Who are not yet killed for the testimony of Jesus.
Are always delivered unto death — Are perpetually in the very jaws of destruction; which we willingly submit to, that we may "obtain a better resurrection."
Verse 12
[12] So then death worketh in us, but life in you.
So then death worketh in us, but life in you — You live in peace; we die daily.Yet — Living or dying, so long as we believe, we cannot but speak.

Last Sunday, Pastor Molly Vetter told us in her sermon, of leaving Nebraska for college in Boston. Last Sunday, Pastor Molly Vetter told us in her sermon, of leaving Nebraska for college in Boston. Meeting a 71 year old man who knew about her hometown of North Platte, NE, it reminded me of my similar experience during World War II traveling by train from New York to Los Angeles. Now, I was born in Los Angeles, joined the U.S. Coast Guard July 20, 1942 and spent my first year in Los Angeles Harbor on Terminal Island. Then I was selected along with four others from the then 11th Naval District to go to M. I. T. in Boston. The five of us Coast Guardsmen traveled by train through El Paso, up to Chicago, NYC and to Boston, my first residence outside of L.A. Stationed for a year in New York City, I made one trip home by train in 1943 and as we approached the middle of Nebraska, all the military on the train began to discuss the fact that we were about to stop at North Platte, NE, a place I had never heard of. My inquiries discovered that that is where the train changed crews and equipment and that the people of the town (it was on the South side of the tracks) were giving out free food, sandwiches, drinks, pies, cakes, cookies, etc. Sure enough, there must have been over one hundred ladies, girls, children, and a few men handing all of us free goodies and every man on this mostly military train got his fill of delicious food from these happy, people while they thanked us for our service in the military. During the war we all were in uniform of the various Armed Forces. Later, on the reverse trip to NYC it happened again, but with different people. The lady who got the idea, involved all the towns in the area, begun by churches, and picked up by other organizations. No one who ever received this accolade of love and food forgot it.
Later, I believe it was about 1958 or so, I was attending our church here and in those days visitors were invited to stand, introduce themselves and say where they were from and a lady in the back of the church announced she was from North Platte, Nebraska, so after worship I talked with her and told her of my double experience of North Platte's generosity to military personnel and she said how her church made it their mission to always welcome the military until sometime in 1946. She told me other places she visited had brought forth similar thanks for their thoughtful services of food and friendship.
It was good, also last Sunday, to hear Paul Caldwell give testimony about his love of our church and what it has meant to him over the years. After church he was renting out parking spaces in our church lot for $10.00 each as a church fund-raiser and beach-goers filled the lot over at least once Saturday, Sunday and Monday with help of other dedicated church members.
This Sunday, June 3rd, we have Youth Sunday and we will be served lunch and see film and hear what our youth are doing this summer to help the needy in Baja, Mexico, attend Vacation Bible School and Camps in our nearby mountains. Every one is invited. I've bought my $15 ticket and you can too, after church worship services. We should all attend and support their activities.
New Appointment for Rev. Nicole Reilley
The Bishop has announced his intention to appoint Rev. Nicole Reilley as the lead pastor at the Valencia United Methodist Church, as of July 1. We are so grateful that Rev. Nicole and her husband, Jeff Luther, have been a part of our congregation over these past 6 years, while she's been the Director of New Ministries for our California-Pacific Annual Conference. We hold her in prayer as she uses her gifts and calling in this new role!

Pass the Mic: testimony in worship
This May and June, we are excited to be including testimonies and stories from the people of our congregation in our worship, at 8:30am and 10:30am.
During May, members of our Readiness 360 team will speak during worship. Our Team continues to work to help us grow as a church; you've been a part of their work when you shared in Lenten Grow Groups, took part in recent surveys, and more. Now, they are excited to share about why church and God matter to them. They'll be reminding us of mission: making disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world, and of our vision to be a church caring for one another as Christian community, learning to serve and grow our faith, and responding to the needs of our community and world. You'll hear from our Lay Leader Ofa Tuuholoaki, Stuart Everson and Paul Caldwell.
In June, our youth who are graduating from high school this year will share reflections:
On June 3 (our Youth Sunday), four youth will speak: Bryan Hwang, Taylor Rose, Grace Tuuholoaki and Eunice Tuuholoaki.
On June 17 (which is Father's Day and our Graduation Sunday), Grace and Will Martens will speak.
On June 24, Paul Callender-Clewett, Joshua Kosnoff, Todd Potter and Adam Yorke will share with us.

The weather didn't do us any favors but we did rather well renting our lot over the weekend. We only rented on Memorial Day and made $820. This Sunday is Youth Sunday, and so this week we will be led in worship by the youth band. It’s always inspiring to have the kids leading worship, and we owe a huge thank-you to Stephen (Hale) and Brad (Taylor) for taking on the job of coordinating it all. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Pastor Molly break out her cello (I know she’s playing it, because I wrote a part for her).
Next week we’ll be enjoying our 2ndComposer Sunday, featuring the music of my good friend Sean McDermott. I met Sean in the Master Chorale – he’s a great tenor (in fact, I hired him to join me singing Christmas carols at Pink’s house a few years ago) – but I didn’t know he composed until someone mentioned it in passing, and I invited him to present his stuff at my choral reading session (I produced a choral reading session every year for 12 years until we lost our venue). This Sunday is Youth Sunday, and so this week we will be led in worship by the youth band. I met Sean in the Master Chorale – he's a great tenor (in fact, I hired him to join me singing Christmas carols at Pink's house a few years ago) – but I didn't know he composed until someone mentioned it in passing, and I invited him to present his stuff at my choral reading session (I produced a choral reading session every year for 12 years until we lost our venue). I was entranced by his music – it was lush and melodic and very singable. My thought is to make each Composer Sunday contrast, so that the music doesn't always sound the same. Whereas Sharon's music is at times both intimate and flashy, Sean's music is a bit more traditionally based, yet melodically and harmonically innovative and rich. The piece that we will be premiering is particularly interesting (I don't understand why it hasn't become a standard). We'll also hear an organ solo by Eileen for the prelude, a solo for piano and soprano for the prayer song by Audrey and Cris, a mellow ballad played by the band during communion, and a piece for piano and English horn for the postlude, with Cris at the piano and Eileen playing the English horn part. The next Composer Sunday will be in the fall, and I'm thinking about asking Byron Smith, who is the national god of gospel and spirituals (and a great guy to boot). I'll keep you posted.
The Brilliance is a New York City-based band that is led by the duo David Gungor (Michael's brother) and John Arndt (both of whom played with Michael in the Michael Gungor Band). They started making music together that they called "liturgical art", which then evolved into peaceful protest music. Today, they consider their music to be "spiritual protest". Prayers of the People, this week's prayer song, was released on the 2015 album Brother, and follows our familiar "sing-pray-sing" format.
Michael Gungor is an American singer/songwriter who leads the musical collective Gungor. He began his career in Grand Rapids, Michigan, producing albums from his church through Integrity Media. He released his first album, Bigger Than My Imagination, in 2003, which contained the Dove-nominated single Friend Of God. He later formed the Michael Gungor Band, which consisted of his wife Lisa on vocals, his brother David Gungor on bass and John Arndt on piano, Josh Eatmon on drums and former Desperation Band member Michael Rossback as a guitarist and producer. In 2010, he renamed the band Gungor and has released or collaborated on 18 albums to date. The song Us For Them was part of an ambitious project called Soul, Spirit, Body – a trilogy of albums that was kicked off with the August 2015 release of the album One Wild Life: Soul, which contained Us For Them. That release was followed in March of 2016 with the album One Wild Life: Spirit, and the September 2016 release of the album One Wild Life: Body, which contains this week's closing song, Free. Michael and his wife Lisa live here in Los Angeles with their daughters Amelie and Lucie.
