A LETTER TO YOU
Dear Hope United Methodist Family,

On November 19, 2000 Gretchen and I visited Hope United Methodist Church for the first time. We were still a very young family, we were still settling in to Southern California, me for the first time, and she after several years back east. We were looking for a place where we could grow in our faith, and were touched when a church we had visited over the weekend delivered a fresh loaf of bread to our home. The 18 years since then have seen us blessed by growth in ways we could never have predicted, always supported by the congregation of Hope United Methodist Church.
The loving support of Hope UMC was coupled with the guidance of four different pastors whom I have been blessed to serve with. This support by pastors and congregation was felt through so many milestones in my ministry: the study and attainment of my Masters of Divinity at Fuller Theological Seminary, my path through the candidacy and ordination process in the California Pacific Conference, and becoming a fully connected Elder in the California Pacific Conference. I began at Hope as a member, was hired as the youth director, and for the last several years have been blessed in the leadership as an associate pastorate. In these past 18 years, I have also been blessed to see growth in Hope United Methodist Church. I was fortunate to be able to lay the ground work of what has become a very fruitful youth program. I oversaw the opportunity for adults with developmental difficulties to experience worship in small groups and in our overall church community. I have had the blessing to see the doors opened by the
Lombard Mennonite Peace Center as Hope became a mediating congregation. So many blessed ways that God’s grace flows in this beautiful community.
I have had personal blessings here as well. When Gretchen and I attended here the first time we were only a few years from our wedding, with no children. Over time our family grew with the addition of two beautiful daughters. Annie and Molly grew up at Hope Church, babysat by wonderful church members, playing with toys in my office, and now participating in Children’s and Youth
activities. I am forever grateful for the blessing of having them with me at work, being able to see some of their first steps in my office, and celebrating the confirmation of my oldest daughter not just as a parent, but as a pastoral leader.
Gretchen and I could not have asked for a more loving, supportive environment
to raise our girls. Gretchen, Molly, Annie and I wish the peace of Christ for you, and know that we take your blessings with us as we move forward.
The opportunity to grow never ends. As people of faith we continue to grow, find new opportunities to serve and new and exciting places to experience and share grace. On July 1, 2018 I will experience such an opportunity. I have received word from our district superintendent John Farley that Bishop Grant Hagiya will be appointing me to my first lead pastorate. As with all things new, the people and places we leave behind will be missed, but always hold a special place in our heart. They give us the
strength to move forward with joy and gladness. Thank you, Hope United Methodist Church, for helping me get to this place. From church member, to youth leader, to local pastor and now to full Elder, your presence and prayers have guided me to this wonderful opportunity. As I step away from
Hope United Methodist Church, I will be taking with me the 18 years of growth you have all been participants in. I know you will welcome future church leaders with the same love and support you gave me, and will in return be equally as blessed by their presence, gifts, and service.
God is Love — Rev. M. Andrew Davis

Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
A Good Word about Pastor Drew Davis, one of my favorite human beings. I use humor a lot to express my friendship, but today, it is time for a serious word of appreciation. Drew Davis has just received a new appointment — his first time as “Solo Pastor” or “Pastor-In-Charge” at another United Methodist Church. Drew Davis is one of the most actively compassionate people I have ever met. Countless times in staff
meetings, when we hear about someone who might have their feelings hurt, Drew says, “I will take responsibility to call them and make sure everything is communicated with grace.”
Pastor Drew is my pastor. He has asked me hundreds of times, “And how are YOU doing?” while I am trying to take care of someone else. Drew is a life-long learner. He has accepted new challenges on a regular basis, to serve human needs
right now, and to learn additional skills to help him help people in the future. In the midst of a complex and busy schedule, he carves and shapes his time to give active love to each of his family members.
His Martinsville, Virginia accent has become the vessel of communicating God’s word. Drew says he has 2 sermon messages (no, not wrestling and comics).
1) God loves you, and there is nothing you can do about that.
2) God loves you, so what are you going to do about that?
So yes, I am grieving that I don’t get to be around Drew all the time. And yes, I am rejoicing for the mission of Jesus Christ, whom we serve, that The Reverend Michael
Andrew Davis will take the message given by Jesus Christ, and nurtured by Hope UMC, to the next place.
God bless you, and I’ll roast you later.
Your permanent friend,
Pastor Brian Kent

MISSIONS CORNER
Thank you so much for donations to Christ Ministry Center to aid those who have recently come seeking asylum in this country. The report from Christ UMC is that clothes are not currently needed, but the following items are very much in short supply: diapers size 2-5 and diaper wipes, personal care items, laundry soap especially for babies. Please bring those items to the marked box by the food cart. (For more information on the current situation see the newsletter entitled “E-Vangel newsletter” from Christ United Methodist Ministry Center).
Also, let us all be praying for the situation where children are being separated from their parents, that a much better solution may be found and this practice may be stopped.
Thank you for your specia offerings in May for Children of the Promise Orphanage in Tijuana, which houses and helps 50 homeless teenagers. With your support our church was able to send them $1500! Your gifts are much appreciated!
The June special offering will be for Interfaith Community Services, headquartered in Escondido and serving North County. Hope was one of the founding members of Interfaith in 1979 and has been a strong supporter ever since. For the first half of 2018 they hope to help 1000 homeless people
get off the streets and into permanent housing — they are well on their way but need more help. In. addition, they have programs for youth, seniors, veterans, the unemployed, those with mental health issues, and those recovering from addiction.
Recently, the Leichtag Foundation, a local charitable group, offered to match up to $300,000 donated to Interfaith. Our offering this month will go toward that matching gift. For more information see their website at www.interfaithservices.org.
If you’re interested in ongoing mission efforts in our church, attend our Missions and Outreach meeting on Monday, June 24, 7 pm in Jones 6. Bring ideas and suggestions, hope to see you there! (Carol Millspaugh, Chair, and Terry Sieck, assistant chair)

MUSIC NOTES
This month in the music ministry ...
June is jumping with joyful and jubilant music!
Come and hear praise music on Saturday night
and worship with the SNA praise band. Come at 9am and worship with the New Wine Ensemble.
Come at 10:45 and worship with Voices of Hope, our traditional choir. Our Sunday morning offertories include Matt Askins on June 10 singing, “I Believe,” Lea and Ken Schoenwetter on June 17 with Lea as our soloist and Ken on piano. June 24 we get to hear Rachel Casey on French Horn, and on July 1 we will hear our choirs one last time before their summer recess as we celebrate VBS and some favorite patriotic hymns.
A big THANK YOU to all music volunteers and
patrons!
As Hope’s music director, I just want to thank all who volunteer each week in the music ministry, all who serve on music committees, all who donate money to our ministry, all who cook and clean and file and create, all those in the A/V booth, all who donate extra time and talent for whatever needs arise, and for all — stepping out in faith to serve God through music. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ...
Feeling God’s Nudges ...
There are so many opportunities to serve and
glorify God in the music ministry. Think about joining us in the fall. Sing with the adult choir at 10:45, ring with the Hope Ringers bell choir, join us for Yuletide or Holy Week or the CCS composer festival, help with ushering or greeting a concert, serve at a reception, join the concert committee, work on the audio/visual team, join the flute choir, sing in the Axios youth choir or Joyful Noise children’s choir, take pictures for us at an event, help with photo albums, become a prayer warrior, decorate a bulletin board ... If you’re feeling God’s nudge, pray about it and think about being a part of the music ministry.
We would love to have you! Email us at

Choirs Going to Carnegie Hall • June 14-18
We are thrilled that we will be representing our music ministry in New York this month! What an amazing outreach experience. Church choirs from Ontario, Canada; Missouri, Minnesota, Georgia, Washington, North Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Arkansas, California, Pennsylvania, and Brazil will all join forces and sing Pepper Choplin’s “Our Father” Cantata together with full
orchestra at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, June 17. To be able to share God’s Word through song on a big secular stage is such an honor and privilege. I thank the choirs in preparing this work throughout Lent, and we will take all of Hope UMC with s in our hearts and through our singing ...

THINGS ARE CHANGING
No, not with our pastors, but with our Welcome Page in the bulletins. Because we’re such an active church, we have a lot of information that we need to communicate with you, and sometimes we end up with quite a few verbal announcements at the beginning of each church service. But we’d like to change that. Beginning in July, the Welcome Page in your bulletin will include short announcements. And we do mean short. Please remember that the Times of Hope, our newsletter, is the best place for you to
share all the details of your event or the celebratory announcements that you’d like to make. For a Welcome Page announcement, please keep it to the bare necessities: date, time, purpose of event, contact name, and contact method. That’s it. If you need to say more, you should probably be placing
an article in the Times of Hope. We’re developing a format for the submission of
Welcome Page announcements which will be
available on the church website and in the office. Questions? Please call Melissa Basch in the office.
