The God Pause from The Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States for Saturday, 16 June 2018 - "Little is Much When God Is In It"
1.
In the harvest field now ripened
There's a work for all to do;
Hark! the voice of God is calling,
To the harvest calling you.
Refrain: Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame;
There's a crown, and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus' name.
2. In the mad rush of the broad way,
In the hurry and the strife,
Tell of Jesus' love and mercy,
Give to them the Word of Life.

Refrain: Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame;
There's a crown, and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus' name.
3. Does the place you're called to labor
Seem so small and little known?
It is great if God is in it,
And he'll not forget his own.

Refrain: Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame;
There's a crown, and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus' name.
4. Are you laid aside from service,
Body worn from toil and care?
You can still be in the battle,
In the sacred place of prayer.

Refrain: Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame;
There's a crown, and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus' name.
5. When the conflict here is ended
And our race on earth is run,
He will say, if we are faithful,
"Welcome home, my child--well done!"

Refrain: Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame;
There's a crown, and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus' name.

This hymn is from a gospel song tradition--not appearing in any Lutheran hymnal--has a message that seems apropos for our scripture. According to the book, Then Sings My Soul, this song was sung by George Beverly Shea at the age of 92. The event was a reception for Billy Graham and his team on the eve of one of their evangelical efforts. Morgan thought it was a strange choice of hymn for such a matter. Here they were on the verge of a great mission headlined by the most famous evangelist in the world, and they were singing about the littleness of human effort. Morgan later realized it was the perfect message to be sung. God uses the littlest things in the greatest of ways.
Lord, you have called and equipped us, but we know if things were left up to us, we'd probably mess it up. Thanks for making a little into much when you're involved. Amen.
