The Redondo Beach, California, United States First United Methodist Church eNews for Thursday, 14 June 2018:"Celebrating Grads and Dads this Sunday" "Celebrating Dads and Grads! Worship at 8:30am and 10:30am."
From Pastor Molly:connectionalThis week, I'm away from Redondo Beach, connecting with the people of our California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in worship and work at our Annual Conference session. Our Annual Conference is both a geographic region of the church (including southern California, Hawaii, Guam and Saipan) and a yearly event. Clergy and lay members from all our churches will assemble, representing a beautiful diversity of ethnicity, age, gender, context, gifts and perspectives. Our Bishop, Grant Hagiya, will lead us through the Conference Session, and Bishops from further away will bring sermons to inspire and illuminate. Four lay members of our church will attend, too: George and Peggy Mercer, Stephen Hale and Jonathan Tuuholoaki.
Honestly, I love that Conference gives me a chance to connect with colleagues and friends who've inspired me, and to check in with others I've mentored and encouraged, too. Always, I'm moved by what a gift it is to be a part of a church that's so wondrously complex and diverse.
We United Methodists like to speak about our "connectional system," our distinctively interconnected way of doing church. We have neither the centralized leadership of the Roman Catholic Church (whose Pope has supremacy over the whole Church), nor the local, congregational leadership of a Baptist church. Instead, we balance the powers between our Bishops and Annual Conferences, between the clergy and lay delegates at our every-four-year General Conference and our Judicial Council. We United Methodists have a more complicated system of belonging together, woven deeply into our DNA. This also means we're often slow to change, and that change requires a working-together of lots of different people and communities. It requires all of us being attentive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and careful to listen to one another.
All this makes our time in "conferences" so important. As we seek to be faithful to God in the midst of diverse contexts and radically shifting cultures, we need to find ways to listen to each other and to God, if we hope to move forward. I hope you'll join me in praying for our church--for all the congregations in our California-Pacific Annual Conference and for all the Conferences throughout the world.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

"New Point of View"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
2 Corinthians 5:6-10, 13-17
Testimony from graduating seniors:
Grace Martens and Will Martens
2 Corinthians 5:6 So we are always confident — we know that so long as we are at home in the body, we are away from our home with the Lord; 7 for we live by trust, not by what we see. 8 We are confident, then, and would much prefer to leave our home in the body and come to our home with the Lord.
9 Therefore, whether at home or away from home, we try our utmost to please him; 10 for we must all appear before the Messiah’s court of judgment, where everyone will receive the good or bad consequences of what he did while he was in the body., 13 If we are insane, it is for God’s sake; and if we are sane, it is for your sake. 14 For the Messiah’s love has hold of us, because we are convinced that one man died on behalf of all mankind (which implies that all mankind was already dead), 15 and that he died on behalf of all in order that those who live should not live any longer for themselves but for the one who on their behalf died and was raised. 16 So from now on, we do not look at anyone from a worldly viewpoint. Even if we once regarded the Messiah from a worldly viewpoint, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is united with the Messiah, he is a new creation — the old has passed; look, what has come is fresh and new!
 (Complete Jewish Bible).
2 Corinthians 5:6-10, 13-17
Verse 6
[6] Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
Therefore we behave undauntedly — But most of all when we have death in view; knowing that our greatest happiness lies beyond the grave.
Verse 7
[7] (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
For we cannot clearly see him in this life, wherein we walk by faith only: an evidence, indeed, that necessarily implies a kind of "seeing him who is invisible;" yet as far beneath what we shall have in eternity, as it is above that of bare, unassisted reason.
Verse 8
[8] We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
Present with the Lord — This demonstrates that the happiness of the saints is not deferred till the resurrection.
Verse 9
[9] Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
Therefore we are ambitious — The only ambition which has place in a Christian.
Whether present — In the body.
Or absent — From it.
Verse 10
[10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
For we all — Apostles as well as other men, whether now present in the body, or absent from it.
Must appear — Openly, without covering, where all hidden things will be revealed; probably the sins, even of the faithful, which were forgiven long before. For many of their good works, as their repentance, their revenge against sin, cannot other wise appear. But this will be done at their own desire, without grief, and without shame.According to what he hath done in the body, whether good or evil — In the body he did either good or evil; in the body he is recompensed accordingly.
Verse 13
[13] For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause.
For if we are transported beyond ourselves — Or at least, appear so to others, treated of, 2 Corinthians 5:15-21, speaking or writing with uncommon vehemence.
It is to God — He understands (if men do not) the emotion which himself inspires.
If we be sober — Treated of, 2 Corinthians 6:1-10. If I proceed in a more calm, sedate manner.
It is for your sakes — Even good men bear this, rather than the other method, in their teachers. But these must obey God, whoever is offended by it.
Verse 14
[14] For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
For the love of Christ — To us, and our love to him.
Constraineth us — Both to the one and the other; beareth us on with such a strong, steady, prevailing influence, as winds and tides exert when they waft the vessel to its destined harbour. While we thus judge, that if Christ died for all, then are all, even the best of men, naturally dead - In a state of spiritual death, and liable to death eternal. For had any man been otherwise, Christ had not needed to have died for him.
Verse 15
[15] And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
And that he died for all — That all might be saved.
That they who live — That all who live upon the earth.
Should not henceforth — From the moment they know him.
Live unto themselves — Seek their own honour, profit, pleasure.
But unto him — In all righteousness and true holiness.
Verse 16
[16] Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
So that we from this time — That we knew the love of Christ.
Know no one — Neither ourselves, nor you, neither the rest of the apostles, Galatians 2:6, nor any other person.
After the flesh — According to his former state, country, descent, nobility, riches, power, wisdom. We fear not the great. We regard not the rich or wise. We account not the least less than ourselves. We consider all, only in order to save all. Who is he that thus knows no one after the flesh? ln what land do these Christians live? Yea, if we have known even Christ after the flesh - So as to love him barely with a natural love, so as to glory in having conversed with him on earth, so as to expect only temporal benefits from him.
Verse 17
[17] Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Therefore if any one be in Christ — A true believer in him.
There is a new creation — Only the power that makes a world can make a Christian. And when he is so created, the old things are passed away - Of their own accord, even as snow in spring.Behold — The present, visible, undeniable change! All things are become new - He has new life, new senses, new faculties, new affections, new appetites, new ideas and conceptions. His whole tenor of action and conversation is new, and he lives, as it were, in a new world. God, men, the whole creation, heaven, earth, and all therein, appear in a new light, and stand related to him in a new manner, since he was created anew in Christ Jesus.
(John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes).

1. Hail Jesus! You're my King!
Your life frees me to sing
I will praise You all of my days
You're perfect in all Your ways
2. Hail Jesus! You're my Lord!
I will obey Your word
Because I want to see Your kingdom come
Not my will but Yours be done
3. Glory, glory to the Lamb!
You will take us into the land
We will conquer in Your name
And proclaim that "Jesus reigns!"
4. Hail, hail! Lion of Judah!
How wonderful You are!
Hail, hail! Lion of Judah!
How powerful You are!
5. He's the Lion in the Tribe of Judah
He's the Root and the Offspring of David
He's the Lily of the Valley
He's the Bright and Morning Star
Tag: The Lion of Judah shall break every chain and give to us the victory again and again

How long to sing this song
How long, how long, how long
How long, to sing this song
3. He set my feet upon a rock
And made my footsteps firm
Many will see
Many will see and fear

I will sing, sing a new song
Chorus; I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song

This Sunday is Father's Day, or as our church calls it, Dads and Grads day. Why not celebrate both, for I know most Dads had something to do with with their child's growth and therefore, their move up from Kindergarten through collegiate grad work. So, congratulations to all Dads with special memories of those no longer with us, and to all Grads no matter where they are moving up to.
Last Sunday we were privileged to hear the several compositions of Composer, Music Director Jim Raycroft's friend, Sean McDermott, who writes beautifully. I particularly liked the anthem the choir sang titled Ave Maria. Jim's notes on the work indicate it was performed for the Vatican in Rome and was a success there. I can see why. Of course Jim conducted it magnificently as our choir outdid itself in the rendition,
At this time our Church Trustees have an important major financial drive to make needed repairs for outside stairs, lighting to save money throughout and new flooring in the Epworth Lounge. It is also hoped that a new church sign for the South Steps of our sanctuary could be included. The sign has long been in shabby disrepair and needs attention soon.

Why Church?by Liz Gyori
For me, it boils down to this: I am a better person as a part of the church than I would be, and have been, without it.
Some people track the changes in their lives by milestones: before and after marriage or kids, job changes or moves. I do that, too, but I add another marker: before and after I joined my first Methodist congregation at age 25. And while that milestone is significant to me, it doesn't mean that I was all bad before then and consistently good afterwards. It was more like I'd been asleep to the possibilities that a life of faith offered, and then, wonderfully awakened to them. (Click to read more)

Next week is the choir's last Sunday before the summer break, and they're going to serenade you with that lovely ballad you heard on Palm Sunday, I Believe, as well as rock the house with the raucous Victory Chant and get everyone grooving with Swingin' With The Saints. Be there or be square...
During the summer, we'll be hearing from a variety of guest artists, including our own Pauline Tamale, Stacy Park, Daryl Thomas and the McCandless family. We will also play host to a special group called the Slaves Of Goodness at the end of August. We'll have more on them later.
How Wonderful, How Marvelous, also known as I Stand Amazed, is a gospel tune written 1905 by Charles H. Gabriel, who was responsible for writing more than 7000 songs, including His Eye Is On The Sparrow. In fact, I Stand Amazed In The Presencecan be found at #371 in our own hymnbook. He was born on a farm in Wilton, Iowa in 1856 and developed an interest in music at a very early age, traveling around leading his own shape note (an early American musical artform) singing schools at about age 17. He eventually became music director at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in San Francisco (1890-1892), then moved to Chicago to work with a music publishing house. He died in Hollywood in 1932, leaving behind a huge musical legacy.
On September 26, 1976, 14 year old Larry Mullen, Jr. placed a note on the bulletin board of Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, Ireland, looking for members to form a band. 6 people responded. They began as Feedback, performing covers of other artists' music, then in 1977 changed their name to The Hype with 5 members. In March of 1978, they phased out their fifth man and changed their name to U2, playing their own original material. Their 1st big break came when they won a competition on St. Patrick's Day, 1978, which provided them with the opportunity to record a demo that would be heard by CBS Ireland, a record label. Since then U2 has gone on to release 13 studio albums and have become one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, selling over 170 million albums worldwide. They have won 22 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked U2 as 22nd on their list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". 40 is a setting of Psalm 40, and was released as part of the 1983 album War, and has been included in no less than six other albums. The song was recorded at the end of the recording session for the album, and bassist Adam Clayton had already left the studio. The three remaining members decided they didn't have a strong song to close the album, but were being thrown out of the studio because their time was up. So they quickly wrote and recorded 40 (in about 20 minutes, according to Bono – born Paul David Hewson) with The Edge (born David Howell Evans) switching off between guitar and bass. At live performances, Clayton and The Edge would switch instruments and the band members would begin to leave the stage – first Bono, then Clayton, then The Edge, and finally drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. The crowd would continue to sing the refrain "How long....to sing this song..." long after the band had left the stage.
