The Upper Room Daily Devotional in Nashville Tennessee United States for Thursday, 14 June 2018 "All-Surpassing Power" by Lindsay West (Texas) 2 Corinthians 4:7-15 (Complete Jewish Bible).
We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. (2 Corinthians 4:7 (NIV))
I had lived my whole life with my hands jerking out of my control. I thought it was normal. It wasn’t until middle school that I learned how serious my condition was. One Sunday morning, I had a grand-mal seizure. One moment I was in the kitchen and the next in an ambulance. I was diagnosed with epilepsy, chronic migraines, and POTS (a heart condition making me susceptible to dizziness). During my freshman year of high school, I used a wheelchair because I was too unstable to walk down the halls. I felt limited by my health and judged by my peers; but I also kept remembering that no matter how weak I am, God is strong.
As believers, we have the all-surpassing power of God inside us. Although my body was unpredictable and weak, I was being upheld by God. When I became scared or my body tightened as if about to seize, I would call out to God and God would answer. Through all of the seemingly endless doctor’s appointments and emergency room visits God never left me.
I find comfort in knowing that God lives in me and will never leave me. Despite my diagnosis, I can face each day with renewed faith, knowing that my soul is well and that nothing of this world can crush or destroy me because God is with me.
TODAY'S PRAYER: Dear Lord, use us for your purpose and to bring glory to your name. Amen.
TODAY'S READING: 2 Corinthians 4:
7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it will be evident that such overwhelming power comes from God and not from us. 8 We have all kinds of troubles, but we are not crushed; we are perplexed, yet not in despair; 9 persecuted, yet not abandoned; knocked down, yet not destroyed. 10 We always carry in our bodies the dying of Yeshua, so that the life of Yeshua may be manifested in our bodies too. 11 For we who are alive are always being handed over to death for Yeshua’s sake, so that Yeshua’s life also might be manifested in our mortal bodies. 12 Thus death is at work in us but life in you.
13 The Tanakh says, “I trusted, therefore I spoke.”[
2 Corinthians 4:13 Psalm 116:10] Since we have that same Spirit who enables us to trust, we also trust and therefore speak; 14 because we know that he who raised the Lord Yeshua will also raise us with Yeshua and bring us along with you into his presence. 15 All this is for your sakes, so that as grace flows out to more and more people, it may cause thanksgiving to overflow and bring glory to God. (Complete Jewish Bible).
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Because God is with me, I can face anything today brings.
PRAYER FOCUS: Those living with epilepsy
