The Upper Room Daily Devotional in Nashville Tennessee United States for Tuesday, 19 June 2018 "Prayer Works" by Mary Ellen Piland (North Carolina) Ephesians 6:18-19
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Philippians 4:13 (KJV))
Recently a routine eye exam revealed a macular hole in my left eye. I had not noticed any changes in my vision, but I was suddenly in danger of losing my sight and needed surgery immediately.
Anxiety overwhelmed me. I tried to cope on my own by reading scripture and reciting memorized verses, including today’s verse. I reached out to my pastor to ask for prayers for my doctors, my husband, and me. I began to feel some relief. I was hesitant to seek help on social media, but what better way to ask for prayers from many friends?
As I was getting ready the night before surgery, I was surrounded by calm feelings of peace, warmth, and safety. My anxiety left me. I felt the prayers working in my life in a way I had never felt before. Reading the thoughts and prayers of my social media friends helped me face my health issue. Reaching out to others who share my faith in God gave me strength. I know prayer works, so I continue to pray for others no matter how the request comes.
TODAY'S PRAYER: Dear God, thank you for the strength Christ brings us when we pray. Amen.
TODAY'S READING: Ephesians 6:
18-18 as you pray at all times, with all kinds of prayers and requests, in the Spirit, vigilantly and persistently, for all God’s people.
19 And pray for me, too, that whenever I open my mouth, the words will be given to me to be bold in making known the secret of the Good News,
 (Complete Jewish Bible)
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
My prayers can strengthen others.
