Trinity United Methodist Church of Gainesville, Florida, United States Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Thursday, 1 January 2015 "The 'Catholic Spirit'"
In one of his most famous sermons, "Catholic Spirit" Wesley wrote, "Though we can't think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion? Without all doubt, we may."
By "Catholic" Wesley meant "common" or "universal." He was teaching his followers then and now to build bridges rather than walls. The unity of the Body of Christ is at stake, and we ought always to work to preserve its unity. Similarly Paul in I Corinthians reminds his readers that the unity of the followers of Jesus is hugely important, so follow the most excellent way of love: "Love is patient, love is kind..."
Remember, this Sunday we are back to our regular worship schedule of 3 services, and the very special John Wesley Covenant Service; it will get your new year off in the best possible way.
