Although the morning of Saturday, April 25th dawned grey and cool in Calgary that wasn’t enough to dampen the enthusiasm and excitement of the 136 Ambrose graduates preparing to receive their diplomas from President Dr. Gordon T. Smith. Always a highlight of the school year, this year’s Commencement did not disappoint and the gymnasium was filled to capacity with proud family, friends and supporters of the graduates. Of the 136 graduates, 96 graduated with an Arts and Science degree – including 25 with the Bachelor of Education after-degree – and 40 from the Faculty of Theology. Led by senior administration and faculty, the graduates entered the hall for the ceremony to Processional music by Henry Purcell. Proceedings were projected onto screens so that no one missed a moment, and also streamed live for those who could not be in Calgary.
Dr. Bruce Hindmarsh of Regent College, Vancouver was the Commencement speaker and he reminded graduates that what they have received from a quality education at Ambrose would carry them through many of the experiences they will face in life. He also spoke powerfully of the importance and value of Christian higher education to the future of the Church and to society.

Connecticut pastor shot early Sunday
A Connecticut pastor was shot early last Sunday morning, May 24, while putting out Memorial Day flags, NBC Connecticut, the Hartford Courant, and several other news outlets reported.
Augustus Sealy, 54, pastor of Hartford First Church of the Nazarene, was shot twice in the leg and once in the shoulder around 6:30 a.m. local time. The Courant reported he was found in the road.
A little over 10 minutes later, another individual was shot six times. The 27-year-old male victim was shot in the torso and arms, NBC Connecticut reported. Both victims were taken to the hospital and released this week.
Police believe the shootings are related and released video footage of a suspect. They are also investigating the shootings as a possible hate crime.
Hartford First Church official Elton Adams told NBC Connecticut on Monday that Sealy was outside the church placing flags in the yard as part of an annual tradition for the church's Memorial Day celebration. The Courant reported American flags bordered the front lawn of the church along the sidewalk, but stopped abruptly.
A service was also planned later that day to honor Sealy's fifth anniversary at the church. WFSB reported an associate pastor at the church canceled the Sunday afternoon celebration though Sealy requested things continue as planned.
Members of the church arriving for Sunday services were shocked to hear the news about their pastor.
A note on the church's website requested prayer for Sealy and his family.
"There’s so many mixed emotions right now. It’s hard," Myrna Springer, a secretary at the church, told NBC. "People’s spirits are low. We just don’t know.”
She told NBC Connecticut that Augustus is a "very caring" and "comfortable person" who is "easy to get along with."
According to reports, there have been at least three fatal shooting in Hartford in the last two weeks.
Prayer is requested for the victims and Hartford First Church.

Commencement: Class of 2015
Thousands of people gathered at Trevecca’s Quad under a cloudless spring sky on Saturday, May 9 for the University’s 114th Commencement. The McClurkan building set the backdrop for the annual graduation celebration. Six thousand chairs filled the Quad, but the event was overflowing with many more than expected, as is the yearly trend.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, titled “The Mission: Knowing, Being, Doing,” was Dr. Alisha Russell, associate professor of biology. She referred to the Class of 2015 as her “adopted class.” She challenged graduates to apply what they learned at Trevecca to the context of their journeys moving forward.
Three graduates accepted that challenge and spoke, representing their respective degree types: Jessica Long, for traditional undergraduates; Carey Richmond, for degree completion students; and Gregory Steward, for graduate students.
The University presented diplomas to 739 graduates, who were welcomed into the Alumni Association by its president, Mr. Don Hastings.
One of the highlights of this year’s commencement was the first graduating class for the University’s new Christian Ministry Online degree. Ten students graduated with the degree, which is designed for people who desire to be actively involved in ministry in whatever facet of life they make their mark in.
Another highlight of the day was the awarding of three honorary doctorates. Ben Speer, original member of the renowned gospel music family, the Speers, was honored, along with Faye Speer, his sister in law. They were recognized for their years of Christian service through evangelism and gospel music, as well as their continued support of the University. Ben completed his degree at Trevecca in 1954, and Faye attended Trevecca from 1946 until 1948, when she married the late Brock Speer, who was also given an honory doctorate in 1995. She later on went back to complete her degree, graduating in 1974.
Ming Wang, PhD, MD was also given an honorary doctorate for his work as a laser eye surgeon and philanthropist. Wang, has performed over 55,000 eye procedures, many of which were on patients who would have otherwise not had the opportunity or the resources needed for the procedures. He also has a ministry which is working to provide 10,000 Chinese Bibles to the people of China. Wang has spoken at many Trevecca events about his work.
Dr. Dan Boone, University president, presented this year’s Trevecca Citizenship Award. The award is given to a student who best exemplifies the qualities that Trevecca wants its students to develop. The award was presented to Corey Williams, a commercial music major from Escondido, California.

Rwanda native shares testimony
Lucie and her husband, Elysee.
Lucie Nzayisenga, a pastor in Malawi, shares her personal testimony.
I was born in Rwanda from a churchgoers’ family, but both parents were in different denominations — my father was in one denomination and my mother was in another. As children we were following our mother, but as we grew up we needed to choose ourselves where to belong. My three brothers decided to go with my father and my two sisters and I remained with my mother.
It was difficult to be together as a family and enjoy celebrations or agree together. The reason was firstly, my parents had different views about their religions; secondly, my father was polygamous, though later he came to divorce the first wife and got married to my mother legally.
The year 1994 was a wicked year for every Rwandese. There was a severe hatred among two ethnic groups in our country where many people lost their lives, including my two uncles and other relatives, within a short period of three months. However, though the war was so intense all over the country, my father did not want us to run away since he loved his cattle. One evening, a large group of people came and attacked our home carrying violent arms: machetes and (pangas) and other traditional arms.

- The tent package includes heavy duty vinyl for roofing, galvanized steel posts, metal stakes, nylon ropes. If extra funding is available, we include some plastic chairs and lectern.
- The tent package is given mostly to new church plants in the rural areas and to congregations whose church buildings were destroyed by natural disaster.
- The tent is also used (if needed) as a child-friendly space during disaster response. It serves as a venue to conduct stress debriefing and spiritual and psychosocial care for children affected by calamity.
- The size of the tent varies depending on the need and size of the church lot. The smallest size is 12 x 15 feet. Each tent ranges from US$500 to $600.

The two were out of their minds with a kind of madness for years that had placed great tensions and burdens on the whole family.
Sajita sought out medical doctors as well as witch doctors for healing for their mental state, but no one knew what to do.
Her brother, Akash*, now 18, remembers what it was like when he was sick for four years, since the age of 12. It was like he was unconscious, and words came out of his mouth, but he didn’t know what they meant. For four years he was unable to continue going to school, and hadn’t learned how to read or write. He was also aggressive, sometimes attacking people. Their father was the same.
Then some Christians came to their area of Kathmandu, Nepal, to show a gospel drama. For Sajita, the gospel message presented a hope for her family that she had not found anywhere else. She believed in Jesus and began to follow Him.

Haiti pastor receives new house
An 11-member Work & Witness team from West Virginia, USA, arrived in Haiti May 8 to finish constructing a parsonage for Pastor Paul Oulus and his family.
The group worked quickly to finish construction and present the house May 14. They started work in the early morning, painting the ceiling and building the furniture with help from the local congregation. A stove and propane tank were also provided to Pastor Paul's wife, who previously cooked with charcoal.
The property has a well built by the Haiti Water Project and sponsored by a group from West Virginia, but the water from this well is not safe to drink, so the team also provided the family with a water purifier.
The leadership and the team shared a special time with the family worshipping the Lord together.
Pastor Paul Oulus and his family now have a new home thanks to Darin and Tonya Kucey, Haiti Work & Witness coordinators, the U.S. W&W teams serving in Haiti, and the local congregation who participated in the construction.

Maximum Mission event reaches Guatemala community
San Antonio Nejapa, Guatemala
A group of 26 young adults from the Guatemala Central District visited the community of San Antonio Nejapa May 1 through 3 for a Maximum Mission event called “Living the Great Commission.”
Several activities were held, and in each of them God’s blessing was felt by both the community and the volunteers. They also presented the “Goal Project” in which 70 youth and children participated. Guitar and drums lessons were also given to 15 teenagers.
Eighty children attended the Bible school and visited 35 houses to share the gospel message with the EvangeCube. Despite rain, they presented the JESUS film to 50 people at night, with some viewers accepting Jesus as their Savior. The team also provided Bibles and New Testaments to those that accepted Christ.
In addition, there was a medical clinic in which free assistance, anti-parasite medicines, vitamins, and medications (according to the medical diagnosis) were provided to 127 people. Two Nazarenes dentists treated 30 people.
Children received toys and stuffed animals during all activities and on the last day, they were given clothing.
“We thank God for allowing this activity in which we share the love of Christ with the people in the community and for all the people who collaborated for the purchase of everything we used," Nelson Morales said. "May honor and glory be given to the Lord!”[Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica Region]

Trevecca Urban Farm receives award from Tennessee governorTrevecca Nazarene University’s Urban Farm was recognized by Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) as a winner of the 2015 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards.
The Urban Farm won the award in the category titled “Environmental Education and Outreach – Schools" for its efforts to educate people in the surrounding neighborhoods about sustainability and farming.
Located at the back corner of the university’s campus, the Urban Farm was built in 2011 as a teaching tool for students to learn how to help food-insecure neighborhoods, as well as for community members to learn how to grow their own food in an area known as a “food desert,” since food is not closely accessible to those living in the neighborhood.
The farm is operated by Jason Adkins, environmental projects coordinator and professor at Trevecca.
The farm helps conserve fuel that would otherwise have been needed to truck in food for members of the community where it is set. Farm staff, students, and volunteers have been among those who have helped keep the farm running, as well as teach the locals about farming — especially in an urban setting.
Projects included farm camps, two community gardens used for growing food, and presentations locally, nationally, and worldwide in places like the Philippines.
Chris Farrell, emeritus professor of biology and the environment, has been heavily involved with many of the farm projects since the farm first began.
“The most gratifying thing about the unfolding of this community resource is the number of students and community members that are excited and continue to contribute in unusual ways,” Farrell said. “Jason Adkins and I have often found ourselves in awe of the way in which this farm grows."
TDEC Commissioner Bob Martineau spoke about the award winners.
“The quality of our environment directly impacts our quality of life, impacting how Tennesseans live, work, and play," he said. "It’s important that we pause to recognize the people and organizations that work so hard to protect our environment while teaching others about sustainability.”
The awards program “recognizes exceptional voluntary actions that improve or protect the environment and natural resources with projects or initiatives not required by law or regulation,” according to the statement released by TDEC.
Trevecca will officially receive the honor June 23 at an award ceremony for the 2015 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards in Nashville.[Trevecca Nazarene University]

Ambrose launches Diploma in ActingAmbrose University announced the launch of the Diploma in Acting program for fall 2015. This two-year commencement into the art and industry of theatre prepares students for careers as professional actors, directors, and playwrights. It also provides a strong foundation for a variety of roles in theatre management.
The program is unique in Canada. Program instructors are working theatre professionals who bring relevant hands–on experiences to the classroom stage. Through intense training, students will develop the rigour required to create good stories and the personal fortitude needed to sustain a life in the arts. Instructors also introduce students to the Calgary theatre community through collaboration, production, and internships.
For Barrett Hileman, director of Theatre Program, the most exciting aspect of the program’s design is the integration of faith and learning.
“Our program is a unique combination of conservatory training and discipleship, challenging you to incorporate personal faith into art,” he said.
From acting to stage combat, playwriting, and dance, the Diploma in Acting program aims to create artists of excellence with a foundation of faith.

Churches invited to set aside Sunday to advocate for children in needNazarene churches are invited to participate in the inaugural Child Sponsorship Sunday on Sunday, June 14. Through this event, individuals who currently sponsor children through the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Child Sponsorship program will have a chance to share about child sponsorship with their local congregation.
The theme of the event is "Be a Part of the Story," a concept centered around the idea that sponsors can help children living in poverty to change their stories. Churches are also invited to schedule the event on alternate dates if this Sunday is unavailable.
Local congregations around the world partner with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries to meet the spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, and relational needs of children living in poverty. The holistic child development model also incorporates family and community, working to equip them to provide safe, nurturing environments for their children.
Through the Child Sponsorship program, children are able to attend church-led child development centers, where they receive education and tutoring, supplemental nutrition, hygiene education, counseling and support, play-based social development, Bible-based teaching, and spiritual nurturing.
Through the program, children gain skills and opportunities to interrupt the cycle of poverty they were born into, learn about and experience God’s love, and grow into the people God created them to be.
A recent study of more than 1,380 children in Bolivia, India, Indonesia, and Kenya showed that children who were a part of a child sponsorship program experienced higher levels of self-esteem as well as educational and occupational aspirations. They were also more likely to become community and church leaders as they grew up.
Child Sponsorship Sunday is a day set aside for churches to advocate on behalf of children in need. Through child sponsorship, children gain the opportunity to change their stories from those of poverty to those of possibility.
Currently, 12,000 children worldwide are being sponsored through the NCM Child Sponsorship program, but thousands more are on the waiting list.
