John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Text to read: Luke 9:28-36
Verse 28
[28] And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
Matthew 17:1; Mark 9:2.
Verse 31
[31] Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
In glory — Like Christ with whom they talked.
Verse 32
[32] But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
They saw his glory — The very same expression in which it is described by St. John, John 1:14; and by St. Peter, 2 Peter 1:16.
Verse 34
[34] While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
A cloud came and overshadowed them all. And they, the apostles, feared, while they (Moses and Elijah) entered into the cloud, which took them away.

Text to read: Luke 9:28-36

  • Read Luke 9:28-36.
  • What would it have felt like for Peter and James and John to be suddenly covered in a cloud? (HINT: learn what clouds signify in the Bible.)[CLOUD: "The Hebrew so rendered means "a covering," because clouds cover" "the sky. The word is used as a symbol of the Divine presence, as" indicating the splendour of that glory which it conceals (Ex. "16:10; 33:9; Num. 11:25; 12:5; Job 22:14; Ps. 18:11). A "cloud" "without rain" is a proverbial saying, denoting a man who does" not keep his promise (Prov. 16:15; Isa. 18:4; 25:5; Jude 1:12). A cloud is the figure of that which is transitory (Job 30:15; Hos. 6:4). A bright cloud is the symbolical seat of the Divine "presence (Ex. 29:42, 43; 1 Kings 8:10; 2 Chr. 5:14; Ezek. 43:4)," and was called the Shechinah (q.v.). Jehovah came down upon Sinai in a cloud (Ex. 19:9); and the cloud filled the court around the tabernacle in the wilderness so that Moses could not "enter it (Ex. 40:34, 35). At the dedication of the temple also" "the cloud "filled the house of the Lord" (1 Kings 8:10). Thus in" like manner when Christ comes the second time he is described as "coming "in the clouds" (Matt. 17:5; 24:30; Acts 1:9, 11). False" teachers are likened unto clouds carried about with a tempest (2 "Pet. 2:17). The infirmities of old age, which come one after" "another, are compared by Solomon to "clouds returning after the" "rain" (Eccl. 12:2). The blotting out of sins is like the sudden" disappearance of threatening clouds from the sky (Isa. 44:22). "Cloud, the pillar of, was the glory-cloud which indicated God's presence leading the ransomed people through the wilderness (Ex. "13:22; 33:9, 10). This pillar preceded the people as they" "marched, resting on the ark (Ex. 13:21; 40:36). By night it" became a pillar of fire (Num. 9:17-23).]

It’s destroying him! 40 I asked your talmidim to drive the spirit out, but they couldn’t.” 41 “Perverted people, without any trust!” Yeshua answered, “How long do I have to be with you and put up with you? The story of Jesus' transfiguration (Luke 9:
28 About a week after Yeshua said these things, he took Kefa, Yochanan and Ya‘akov with him and went up to the hill country to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed; and his clothing became gleaming white. 30 Suddenly there were two men talking with him — Moshe and Eliyahu! 31 They appeared in glorious splendor and spoke of his exodus, which he was soon to accomplish in Yerushalayim. 32 Kefa and those with him had been sound asleep; but on becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Yeshua, Kefa said to him, not knowing what he was saying, “It’s good that we’re here, Rabbi! They were frightened as they entered the cloud; 35 and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to him!” 36 When the voice spoke, Yeshua was alone once more. They kept quiet — at that time they told no one anything of what they had seen.
28-36) begins with these words, "Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray." What sayings came just before? Read Luke 9:18 Once when Yeshua was praying in private, his talmidim were with him; and he asked them, “Who are the crowds saying I am?” 19 They answered, “Yochanan the Immerser; but others say Eliyahu, and others that some prophet of long ago has risen.” 20 “But you,” he said to them, “who do you say I am?” Kefa answered, “The Mashiach of God!” 21 However, he, warning them, ordered them to tell this to no one, 22 adding, “The Son of Man has to endure much suffering and be rejected by the elders, the head cohanim and the Torah-teachers; and he has to be put to death; but on the third day, he has to be raised to life.”
23 Then to everyone he said, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him say ‘No’ to himself, take up his execution-stake daily and keep following me. 24 For whoever tries to save his own life will destroy it, but whoever destroys his life on my account will save it. 25 What will it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but destroys or forfeits his own life? 26 For if someone is ashamed of me and of what I say, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and that of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 I tell you the truth, there are some people standing here who will not experience death until they see the Kingdom of God.”

Sermon Story "Transfiguration or Transformation" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 7 February 2016 with Scripture Text to read: Text to read: Luke 9:28 About a week after Yeshua said these things, he took Kefa, Yochanan and Ya‘akov with him and went up to the hill country to pray. Transfiguration means a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful or spiritual state: "in this light the junk undergoes a transfiguration; it shines"
Transformation means a thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance: "its landscape has undergone a radical transformation"
---------------------

As we remember the moments of Jesus' Transfiguration, we are reminded of His promise to transform us to allow the light of His to shine from us to others around us. The disciples were heavy with sleep when Moses and Elijah first appeared to Jesus and talking with Him about His soon death on the cross and resurrection for all creation. When they did notice, the only thing that Peter could think of to say was to build three tabernacles in honor of Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. Yet, as soon as the words came out of Peter's mouth, a cloud surrounded them and Moses and Elijah were taken back up and a voice came from the crowd saying that Jesus is His beloved Son and they are to listen to Him. How often do we really listen to what Jesus is telling us to do and be? Jesus went on to say that they were not to tell anyone what just happened until after He is glorified meaning after is suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension back to the Father. We seek ways to honor God and Jesus in building large church buildings or retreat centers when all He ask of us is to love Him with our whole hearts, minds, spirits, and bodies then love love all other people into His kingdom by His love and mercy. Lord, how often do we fail in this matter by rejecting certain people due to their culture, skin color, sexual orientation, different thinking and understanding, or different abilities/disabilities? Lord, we come to take and eat Your Body and drink Your Blood in our participation of the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist to receive more Love, Mercy, and Grace to give to all others. We come to receive singing the Hymn "How Can We Sinners Know" by  Charles Wesley

1. How can we sinners know
our sins on earth forgiven?
How can my gracious Savior show
my name inscribed in heaven?
2. What we have felt and seen,
with confidence we tell,
and publish to the ends of earth
the signs infallible.
3. We who in Christ believe
that he for us hath died,
we all his unknown peace receive
and feel his blood applied.
4. We by his Spirit prove
and know the things of God,
the things which freely doth impart
and signs us with his cross.
5. The meek and lowly heart
that in our Savior was,
to us that Spirit doth impart
and signs us with his cross.
6. Our nature's turned, our mind
transformed in all its powers,
and both the witnesses are joined,
the Spirit of God with ours.
