Text to read: Luke 4:1Then Yeshua, filled with the Ruach HaKodesh, returned from the Yarden and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days of testing by the Adversary. During that time he ate nothing, and afterwards he was hungry. 3 The Adversary said to him, “If you are the Son of God, order this stone to become bread.” 4 Yeshua answered him, “The Tanakhsays, ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’”[Luke 4:4 Deuteronomy 8:3]
5 The Adversary took him up, showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world,6 and said to him, “I will give you all this power and glory. It has been handed over to me, and I can give it to whomever I choose. 7 So if you will worship me, it will all be yours.”8 Yeshua answered him, “The Tanakh says, ‘Worship Adonai your God and serve himonly.’”[Luke 4:8 Deuteronomy 6:13–14]
9 Then he took him to Yerushalayim, set him on the highest point of the Temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, jump from here! 10 For the Tanakh says,
‘He will order his angels
to be responsible for you and to protect you.
11 They will support you with their hands,
so that you will not hurt your feet on the stones.’”[Luke 4:11 Psalm 91:11–12]
12 Yeshua answered him, “It also says, ‘Do not put Adonai your God to the test.’”[Luke 4:12 Deuteronomy 6:16]13 When the Adversary had ended all his testings, he let him alone until an opportune time.---------------------
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Luke 4:1-13
Verse 4
[4] And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Verse 6
[6] And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
I give it to whomsoever I will — Not so, Satan. It is God, not thou, that putteth down one, and setteth up another: although sometimes Satan, by God's permission, may occasion great revolutions in the world.
Verse 8
[8] And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Verse 10
[10] For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
Verse 12
[12] And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Verse 13
[13] And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
A convenient season — In the garden of Gethsemane, Luke 22:53.

Sermpn Story "Temptations" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 14 February 2016 with Scripture Luke 4:1Then Yeshua, filled with the Ruach HaKodesh, returned from the Yarden and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days of testing by the Adversary. During that time he ate nothing, and afterwards he was hungry. 3 The Adversary said to him, “If you are the Son of God, order this stone to become bread.” 4 Yeshua answered him, “The Tanakh says, ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’”[Luke 4:4 Deuteronomy 8:3]

We read and hear now how the Spirit led Jesus out into the desert to be tempted after He was baptized by John and God's voice was heard saying that Jesus is His beloved Son in whom I am pleased. This was a high point for Jesus because of the voice and the Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove. We look at this passage and realize how often we ourselves are tempted after some kind of Spirit high we have receive from God no matter what the circumstances. As Jesus was led and fasted and prayed for orty days to build strength for what the Father has called Him to do and be, we can relate as we are called into certain ways for our lives. Too often, we hear God's call and begin doing without preparing ourselves with God's Holy Spirit for the tasks ahead of us as Jesus did. As the forty days of fasting and prayer ended, the Devil came to Jesus and tempted Him in three ways to quench His hunger, to prove God's love for Him, and with the power of the world, yet Jesus conquered these temptations by rightfully using the correct interpretation of Scriptures. The hearing Jesus say that people do not live by bread alone and that we are not to tempt the Lord our God and we are to serve God alone and nothing or no one else. Lord, ae seek the ways Jesus resisted His temptation when we are tempted to use the Holy Spirit's Power and His Word to resist the temptation no matter what the temptation is. We seek only to love and serve God for His purposes not our own to gain worldly fame or wealth. How have we sought to yield to our temptations rather then to resist them? Will we understand God's power given to us to resist and temptation to sin? How will we come to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus through the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist eating His Body and drinking His Blood to receive God's Power to resist temptation that comes our way? We come to receive singing the Hymn "Yield Not to Temptation" by Horatio R. Palmer (1868)
1. Yield not to temptation,
For yielding is sin;
Each vict’ry will help you,
Some other to win;
Fightvaliantly onward,
Evil passions subdue;
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.
Refrain:
Ask the Savior to help you,
Comfort, strengthen and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through.
2. Shun evil companions,
Bad language disdain;
God’s name hold in rev’rence,
Nor take it in vain;
Be thoughtful and earnest,
Kindhearted and true;
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.
Refrain:
Ask the Savior to help you,
Comfort, strengthen and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through.
3. To him that o’ercometh,
God giveth a crown;
Through faith we will conquer,
Though often cast down;
He who is our Savior,
Our strength will renew;
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.
Refrain:
Ask the Savior to help you,
Comfort, strengthen and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through.
