From the President's Desk
If you haven't seen it yet, the breaking news this week is the new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, "Families Caring for an Aging America." The report reflects a national consensus building process to identify the challenges facing family caregivers of older adults, and recommends a national plan for caregivers.
This summer has been an exciting time for caregiving. The Alliance released the Cancer Caregiving in the U.S. study, with the National Cancer Institute and Cancer Support Community. If you missed it, check out the webinar featuring an overview of the report and a caregiver perspective. We also had the opportunity to brief Vice President Biden's Moonshot Initiative team on the report, specifically on the demographics of cancer caregivers and the need for end-of-life decision-making assistance.
June also gave us the opportunity to celebrate the Olmstead Decision's 17th anniversary. The Supreme Court's 1999 decision advanced the cause of people and families who manage disabilities, finding that people a right to receive home- and community-based services.
As we approach the fall, we're excited to announce three new projects. In October, we'll be hosting a series of webinars on falls prevention with the National Council on Aging and launching #HealthyFamilies #StickTogether - an adult immunization drive and social media campaign in collaboration withPfizer, CVS Health, and Walgreens.
In late October, we're launching #TalkBrainHealth, a social media campaign and toolkit encouraging conversation among families about brain health. We're working in partnership with the Alzheimer's Foundation of America to release the kit just in time for National Family Caregivers month. Check out the Caregiving Advocates Corner for more on these upcoming campaigns.
Finally, we're rounding out the year with a new white paper on Dementia Caregiving in the U.S., in partnership with the Alzheimer's Association,Home Instead, and Eli Lilly.
As always, we appreciate your support as we continue to look for new and better ways to support America's caregivers.
Best,

Gail Gibson Hunt

Member Spotlight: "Caregiving + Tech = Now"
Parys Grigsby, Special Assistant to the CEO
As an innovator in healthcare, Philips is leading a national conversation on technology and family caregiving. The Alliance is honored to be a part of the Aging Well Hub, a collaborative research and development initiative aimed at delivering innovative connected solutions and services for aging well across the continuum of care. We spoke with the Philips Long Term and Post-Acute Care and Aging Well Solutions team to better understand how their work fits into the needs of caregivers.
Philips is generally known for their work in technology. How do caregiving and technology work together? And how does caregiving fit into Philips' overall mission?
Our products and technologies support people across the lifespan, from people who are in their early lives such as babies, new mothers, and then all the way through to technologies that are used in hospitals for acute care, and everything in between. The Home Monitoring organization in particular focuses on seniors living well across the spectrum of care. Caregivers are a key part of that healthcare spectrum and are key to ensuring that people live as healthy as possible.

Legislation & Advocacy Updates
Michael Reese Wittke, Director of Advocacy
ABLE Savings Accounts
Passage of the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act of 2013 (S 313/HR 647) brought with it the ABLE savings account - a savings account for individuals with disabilities who qualify for Federal programs such as SSI/SSDI. The savings account allows eligible beneficiaries to save money without losing eligibility for public benefits that require meeting a means test. While anyone can make deposits in the ABLE savings accounts, only eligible enrollees can access funds. Ohio and Tennessee rolled out the accounts in June; Nebraska, Florida, North Carolina and Utah are soon to follow. The minimum annual contribution is $50 while maximum annual contribution is $14,000. On average, $1200 per year is deposited into the account.
Independence at Home Act [S. 3130]
Senators Ed Markey (D-MA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Michael Bennet (D-CO), and Rob Portman (R-OH) in July introduced the Independence at Home Act of 2016. The legislation would expand and scale the Independence at Home (IAH) demonstration program. IAH requires primary care providers to provide care in the home setting, 24/7, and to meet specific quality measures, including providing advance care planning.
Kevin and Avonte's Law [S. 2614]
[H.R. 4919]
The U.S. Senate in July passed S.2614 with unanimous consent. This bill aims to safeguard individuals who have autism or other conditions that may cause them to wander away from caregivers. The legislation is named in honor of two boys with autism who perished after wandering. The bill would reauthorize the expired Missing Alzheimer's Disease Patient Alert Program and include new provisions to support people with autism. The companion bill H.R. 4919 still awaits passage in the House.
