From Pastor Molly: Wonder
I was speaking to a local MOPS group here in Redondo Beach this morning. (MOPS is an organization for mothers of preschool-age kids.) This year's theme for their program has wonder as one of its key ideas. It got me thinking about times when I've been stopped in my tracks to notice something wondrous, amazing or beautiful.
Last weekend, the full moon rising caught my attention.
This week, it's the commitment of volunteers who show up at the church every week for Shared Bread.
Everywhere around us, tucked into all the busyness of the world, there are signs of deep love, immense beauty, and resilient hope.
In order to have the strength and daring to continue to choose grace, to live mercy, to work for peace and to pursue justice, we're invited to notice the wonder all around. Breathe deeply, knowing the beauty of this world and its people. May that small wonder give you great strength for today!
Grace and peace,[Pastor Molly Vetter]
I will be away this weekend, celebrating my 40th birthday. I'm so grateful to Rev. Nicole Reilley who will be preaching on Sunday! I will look forward to seeing you next week, on World Communion Sunday.

Genesis 25:19-28
"Better Together: Forgiveness & Reconciliation"
Rev. Nicole Reilley, preaching
Scripture Text for
Genesis 25:19 Here is the history of Yitz’chak, Avraham’s son. Avraham fathered Yitz’chak. 20 Yitz’chak was forty years old when he took Rivkah, the daughter of B’tu’el the Arami from Paddan-Aram and sister of Lavan the Arami, to be his wife. 21 Yitz’chak prayed to Adonai on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. Adonai heeded his prayer, and Rivkah became pregnant. 22 The children fought with each other inside her so much that she said, “If it’s going to be like this, why go on living?” So she went to inquire of Adonai, 23 who answered her, “There are two nations in your womb. From birth they will be two rival peoples. One of these peoples will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
24 When the time for her delivery came, there were twins in her womb. 25 The first to come out was reddish and covered all over with hair, like a coat; so they named him ‘Esav [completely formed, that is, having hair already]. 26 Then his brother emerged, with his hand holding ‘Esav’s heel, so he was called Ya‘akov [he catches by the heel, he supplants]. Yitz’chak was sixty years old when she bore them.
27 The boys grew; and ‘Esav became a skillful hunter, an outdoorsman; while Ya‘akov was a quiet man who stayed in the tents. 28 Yitz’chak favored ‘Esav, because he had a taste for game; Rivkah favored Ya‘akov.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for
Genesis 25:19-28
Verse 20
[20] And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
And Isaac was forty years old — Not much is related concerning Isaac, but what had reference to his father, while he lived, and to his sons afterward; for Isaac seems not to have been a man of action, nor much tried, but to have spent his day, in quietness and silence.
Verse 21
[21] And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife — Though God had promised to multiply his family, he prayed for it; for God's promises must not supersede but encourage our prayers, and be improved as the ground of our faith. Though he had prayed for this mercy many years, and it was not granted, yet he did not leave off praying for it.
Verse 22
[22] And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.
The children struggled within her — The commotion was altogether extra-ordinary, and made her very uneasy: If it be so, or, since it is so, why am I thus? - Before the want of children was her trouble, now the struggle of the children is no less so.
And she went to enquire of the Lord — Some think Melchizedek was now consulted as an oracle, or perhaps some Urim or Teraphim were now used to enquire of God by, as afterwards in the breast-plate of judgment. The word and prayer, by which we now enquire of the Lord, give great relief to those that are upon any account perplexed: it is a mighty ease to spread our case before the Lord, and ask council at his mouth.
Verse 23
[23] And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
Two nations are in thy womb — She was now big not only with two children, but two nations, which should not only in their manners greatly differ from each other, but in their interest contend with each other, and the issue of the contest should be that the elder should serve the younger, which was fulfilled in the subjection of the Edomites for many ages to the house of David.
Verse 25
[25] And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
Esau when he was born was red and hairy, as if he had been already a grown man, whence he had his name Esau, made, reared already. This was an indication of a very strong constitution, and gave cause to expect that he would be a very robust, daring, active man. But Jacob was smooth and tender as other children.
Verse 26
[26] And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
His hand took hold on Esau's heel — This signified, 1. Jacob's pursuit of the birth-right and blessing; from the first he reached forth to have catched hold of it, and if possible to have prevented his brother. 2. His prevailing for it at last: that in process of time he should gain his point. This passage is referred to Hosea 12:3, and from hence he had his name Jacob, a supplanter.
Verse 27
[27] And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
Esau was an hunter — And a man that knew how to live by his wits, for he was a cunning hunter.
A man of the field — All for the game, and never so well but as when he was in pursuit of it.
And Jacob was a plain man — An honest man, that dealt fairly.
And dwelt in tents — Either, 1. As a shepherd, loving that safe and silent employment of keeping sheep, to which also he bred up his children, Genesis 46:34. Or, 2. As a student, he frequented the tents of Melchizedek or Heber, as some understand it, to be taught by them divine things.
Verse 28
[28] And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
And Isaac loved Esau — Isaac though he was not a stirring man himself, yet he loved to have his son active. Esau knew how to please him, and shewed a great respect for him, by treating him often with venison, which won upon him more than one would have thought. But Rebekah loved him whom God loved.

Special Music: "Jesus Will Make a Way" by the Chancel Choir with Will Martens, and "You'll Never Walk Alone," sung by Julie Brody
"Jesus Will Make a Way" (written by John P. Kee)
Chorus
Jesus will make a way out of no way,
when you feel all hope is gone.
Jesus will make a way out of no way,
when you feel you're all alone.
Don't let trials get you down,
Jesus is the best friend I have found,
He will make for you a way;
He will make a way out of no way.
Verse 1
I remember when I was young, growing up in Durham,
on Sundays at eight, we'd all gather 'round to pray;
Grandmother would be there, I can hear her in her prayers saying,
He will make a way out of no way.
Verse 2
Walking down Trade Street, a lady I did meet,
I wondered why there was a tear in her eye.
I didn't hesitate to say, He'll make a way out of no way;
He will make a way out of no way.
Bridge
Jesus, He will make a way, oh.
Jesus, He will make a way, oh.
Jesus, He will make a way, oh.
Jesus, He will make a way.
Vamp 1
Jesus will make a way.
Jesus will make a way.
Vamp 2
I know He will make a way.
I know He will make a way.
"You'll Never Walk Alone" Written by Oscar Hammerstein Ii, Richard Rodgers
you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

Some weeks I have no idea what to include in this essay, but I have memories of days past, I begin with this brief story which happened to me in World War II. In 1943 1 was temporarily stationed in New York City, a wonderful place to be even for a while. The U.S. Coast Guard had trained me in LORAN, Long Range electronic navigation, now obsolete due to GPS, but which was secret and new in 1943 and I was told to be ready to ship somewhere overseas within 24 hours. So I couldn't leave NYC. I had wonderful perks from the USO and saw the shows, museums movies and fun things for about four weeks. Suddenly I stopped (literally) and thought I was in this wonderful city and didn't know a soul, excepting a few Coast Guard buddies with different interests from me. It was then I stepped into an off Broadway USO operating out of an old Methodist Church building. That evening the girls and women
serving delicious sandwiches, pie and coffee were from Christ Park Avenue Methodist Church near 53ro street. I learned that they were inviting Military personnel to Sunday worship and so the next Sunday I went to church in NYC. To make a long story short, I attended there for nearly a year, made friends and after the war in 1945 kept in touch with several. My family and I even hosted some of them if they traveled out here to L.A. Last year, the last of my old New York City Church friends passed away in Ohio, but I'll never forget their loving friendship and giving spirit. I even visited some of them in Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. Etc. This all happened because I was lonely and their church was so friendly and outgoing. What wonderful experiences can happen in church in addition to sharing religion and learning what we all have in common.
We, here, are coming close to the fall Rummage Sale, and I plan to help out the cashiering a bit. I serve with the late Jim and Darlene Hunter's daughter, Shirley. Stop by and say "Hello" if you're there to pick up an item or two. It's Friday and Saturday, October 7 and 8, with a great lunch at Naomi's Cafe Friday Noon.
Pastor Molly's Fall Theme "Better Together" as it shows and should be our church's goal as we get to know people and become friends. My story above couldn't have happened without people wanting to be friends and getting to know each other. Whether you work the Rummage Sale, just shop or eat lunch, it's a chance to enlarge your acquaintanceship by meeting someone you don't really know yet. Let us be "Better Together" as we worship together. See you in church.
Coming at Church
This Fall: Better Together
It's a church theme, a sermon series and more! All fall, we will be celebrating how we're Better Together, remembering how God works in the lives of communities and in our relationships. As the writer of Ecclesiastes said, "And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
It goes much deeper, too--we come to know about God because of the people in whom we have seen God at work. Our faith and love make sense when we live them out with other people here on earth.
There's much more to say, and we hope you'll be a part of this whole meaningful season.
Looking for Good Stories!

Chris Tomlin was born in Texas in 1972 and learned to play guitar by playing along with Willy Nelson recordings. He has become one of the dominant forces in contemporary Christian music, and in 2012 CCLI announced that his songs were played 3 million times in churches that year. His 2013 album Burning Lights debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, only the fourth Christian album ever to open at No. 1, and he was pronounced the most sung songwriter in the world that year.
The Brooklyn Tabernacle is a non-denominational, multi-cultural church in the heart of downtown Brooklyn that began as a small congregation worshiping in a rundown building, and has grown into a congregation of over 16,000. The husband and wife team of Pastor Jim Cymbala and music director Carol Cymbala took over leadership of the 30 member congregation in 1971. By the 1980’s, the church had grown enough to purchase the 1383-seat Carlton Theatre and convert it into their sanctuary. By 2002, they had outgrown that facility and purchased Loew’s Metropolitan Theatre, a former vaudeville theatre, and renovated it into a state-of-the-art, 3,200-seat worship facility.
The choir began with just 9 members in 1971 and grew with the church. Carol Cymbala began writing music for the choir, and they recorded their first album in the 1980’s. Now numbering over 280 members, their music is sung all over the world, and they sang at the 2013 inauguration of President Obama. This week’s anthem, Jesus Will Make A Way, is one of Carol’s classics – simple and beautiful with a gospel accent – and features our own Will Martens as the soloist.
You’ll Never Walk Alone is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musicalCarousel. In the second act of the musical, Nettie Fowler, the cousin of the female protagonist Julie Jordan, sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" to comfort and encourage Julie when her husband, Billy Bigelow, the male lead, commits suicide after a failed robbery attempt. From 1964 through 2010, Jerry Lewis concluded his MDA Labor Day Telethon by singing this song. In addition, at the end of a concert by the rock band Queen, the audience spontaneously sang this song, according to lead guitarist Brian May, and this inspired the creation of their rock anthems We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You.
David Wallace Crowder, who goes by the mononymous stage name Crowder (in the finest tradition of Cher, Madonna, Adele and Prince), was the lead singer in the now defunct David Crowder Band, a contemporary worship band that disbanded in 2012. He has since gone on to a solo career, releasing his first solo studio album in 2014, under the sixsteps/sparrow label, called Neon Steeple. Come As You Are, one of the cuts from that album, peaked at #3 on the US Christian Songs chart and went on to receive a Grammy nomination in 2015 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song.

"Indescribable" by Chris Tomlin
From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea
Creation revealing Your majesty
From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings
All exclaiming
Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name.
You are amazing God
All powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim
You are amazing God
Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go
Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow
Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light
Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night
None can fathom
Indescribable, uncontainable,
You placed the stars in the sky and You know them by name
You are amazing God
All powerful, untameable,
Awestruck we…
