Resurrection West,
Greetings this wonderful Friday morning! Make plans now to be present in worship on Sunday as pastor Adam preaches through the Exodus wilderness story. The Israelites had quite a journey through the wilderness bringing about great fear. Do you encounter fear in your life experience? Fear can be devastating, even debilitating in our lives. How do you get thought it? We will learn together how we face fear and the wilderness moments in our own lives this Sunday!
It’s been such a fun and exciting week of ministry. On Monday evening during our Moses study I looked outside and saw every field filled with football teams and cheer teams practicing (with over 137 kids participating across three sports). Some of the kids were in their game-day uniforms because they were so excited. New coaches were coming on board being mentored by previous coaches. It struck me that sometimes we think of the Holy Spirit of God coming in a mystical and supernatural way and certainly God does, but this week I witnessed the Spirit of God moving in the building of relationships, the forming of christian community, and building bridges across language and cultural barriers. Then on Wednesday night rezlife youth groups were filled with energy as they came together to eat, play, learn, and worship with one another - over 50 at High School Youth group alone. Last night Financial Peace class launched with a group of people learning to grow in stewarding the resources God has blessed them with - and later today I’ll meet almost 25 guys to start our men’s fly-fishing retreat weekend!
I hope this testimony inspires you to get connected in a smaller group! Small groups are about connecting people in christian community, helping us to become deeply committed christians and equipping us to serve Christ with our God-given gifts. We would love to start a new 40-something women’s group for single or married women who would meet at least twice a month. We are always interested in helping to start new small groups. Interested in serving those who’ve been affected by the floods in Louisiana? You can serve on a Disaster Response Trip – Sept 18-24. The team will be serving in the Baton Rouge area removing water damaged sheet rock, mud and debris from homes affected by the flooding in Louisiana. Safe Gatherings certification is required, must be 18 or older. cor.org/disaster

Neighborhood Food Drive – Homerun for Hunger! Help hit hunger out of the ball park in Kansas City this fall during the Neighborhood Food Drive. Pick up food donation bags this week by the front entrance and consider getting some to share with neighbors or coworkers so you can invite others to get involved. Recent statistics show that one out of seven people in the greater Kansas City area will seek help this year for food insecurity. You can help by filling a sack or two or more! Pre-Baptism Class – Join Pastor Jason on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 5:30 pm in the Sanctuary for this pre-baptism class (children welcome with families for the 40-minute class). Holy Baptism is a Covenant between an individual and God. It is God’s word to us, proclaiming our adoption by grace and our word to God, promising our response of faith and love. Prior to being baptized, all adults or families of children need to attend the Pre-Baptism Class to prepare for this sacrament. Persons of all ages can be baptized at Resurrection. We baptize by sprinkling Holy Water and making the sign of the cross on the forehead with anointing oil to invite the presence of the Holy Spirit. Sacred Steps 5k Walk/Run & Kids Fun Run – September 24, 8 am, Resurrection Leawood. Participate in this meaningful and fun annual event and help transform lives in Malawi by providing clean water. For more information and/or to register, visit cor.org/sacredsteps.
Christmas in October – Saturday, October 8, 8 am – 4 pm. Resurrection partners with Christmas In October, a local non-profit, that for the past 33 years has been focused on rehabilitating the houses of lower-income homeowners in the Kansas City area at no cost to the homeowners. Through our relationship with Christmas in October and your help, Resurrection has become a major force in helping elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners remain in their homes. Some of what will happen on October 8, is winterization, painting, yard cleaned up and minor repairs. This year RezWest is sponsoring two houses. We have 27 spots available to fill up with RezWest people. For more information and/or to register to help with a RezWest house, visit cor.org/cio.
3rd Grade Bible Presentation – All 3rd graders are invited to participate in the 3rd Grade Bible Presentation coming up on Sunday, October 9. Register online to attend the service of your choice atcor.org/west/3rdgradebible. If your 3rd grader cannot attend, please register and we will still reserve a Bible for you!
The Road to Wisdom Marriage Course - This study uses the Enneagram Personality Assessment to help you understand not only yourself, but also your spouse’s personality. The Enneagram identifies nine unique personality types. Dr. Dennis and Reve Butler have led this course for business organizations, staff teams, individuals and church groups for years. The class will meet Monday evenings from 6:30-8:15, Oct. 10, 17, 24; Nov. 7, 14, 21. For more information, contact Dave.Robertson@cor.org.
TGiF! 4th and 5th Grade on October 14 from 6-8pm – It’s a night just for 4th & 5th graders! Come out for pizza, Minute-To-Win-It challenges and dessert creations. RezChat Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study – Would you like to look deeper into the meaning of scripture? You are invited to join this group any week on Sunday mornings at 9 am in the annex building outside the back doors of the lower level. Topics vary from week to week, but all are focused on scripture.
Nominations for Resurrection Committees – seeking candidates to serve beginning in 2017: finance, trustees, staff parish relations, foundation, nominations and lay delegates to annual conference. Refer someone you know, or indicate your interest in serving by Sunday, Oct. 16, at cor.org/committees.
