Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Chrostek for Friday, September 16, 2016 from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown in Kansas City, Missouri, United States
Greetings RezDowntowners,
I hope this message finds you well…as it is great to be writing you on another Friday morning in KC. I’ve just finished reflecting over the experience and insights shared by our team serving in Honduras. They have been up to so much from putting cement floors in homes for worm prevention to helping to facilitate their sport community outreach program. Please pray for safety and transformation as this team returns to Kansas City tomorrow, in the meantime, in order to see what they’ve been up to, please visit the blog atglobalimpact.blogs.cor.org/category/Honduras.
Also, I’m excited to invite you to join me at FaithWork this Saturday morning at 9am. We’re going to have a great morning serving the city by putting our faith to work. This is the best way to start the weekend! I’d love to see as many of you as possible at the church ready to serve by 9am for a brief coffee and conversation. Afterward, we’ll plan to head out to spend the morning in service all across town, at the Kansas City Rescue Mission with painting projects; Rose Brooks for 'Bingo with the residents;" Whittier Elementary – with various improvement projects; and the Upper Room – to sort and organize books. The Knitting Group will also have a special project beginning this month upstairs in KiDSCOR. I hope you’ll join me, and for more information, please visit cor.org/downtown/faithwork.
I’m really looking forward to so many ministry opportunities we have this fall, from our ever expanding Matthew's Ministries (which you'll hear about in worship this weekend), to our Men's Campout, and our second annual Blessing of the Animals in Washington Park. However, there are two upcoming events in October having to do with our ongoing conversations surround race and our growing collaboration with our friends at Centennial UMC. Please read below to find out more details about all of our events and activities, but pay particular attention to those two special opportunities. I’ll be sure to share in more greater detail in worship this weekend.
Lastly, in addition to worship this weekend, this Sunday night we'll be hosting a Town Hall with updates regarding our Building Project and new property (the KC Star Parking Lot). The Town Hall Meeting will take place in the sanctuary on McGee at 6:30pm this Sunday night. I'll share some building updates as well as some information pertaining to our Tranforming the Heart of the City Capital Campaign as well. I hope you'll consider joining me on Sunday evening as well for this exciting Town Hall!
In the meantime, below you'll find several ways to plug into our community as we seek to build community and change lives in the heart of this city:
Holding Up Your Corner: Continuing the conversation on race with Rev. Dr. F Willis Johnson, pastor of Wellspring Church in Ferguson, MO!
On Saturday, October 1 from 8:30am to Noon at 1522 McGee in the Sanctuary, Resurrection Downtown and Centennial UMC will be spending the morning exploring and sharing our own stories, fears, and realizations about race. We’ll learn from Willis and each other about what it means to ‘be an EMT’ and to hold up your corner. It’ll be a challenging and inspiring morning, and your life will almost certainly expand in some way! Bring a friend or colleague, and experience Holding Up Your Corner: Guided Conversations on Race. For more information or to register, visit cor.org/downtown/conversationsonrace.
Christmas in October – Sign up to transform the city with Centennial UMC! The time has arrived to sign up for helping fix up houses with Christmas in October, we are scheduled for Saturday, October 8! We look forward to working alongside our friends from Centennial UMC in the neighborhood of our partner school, Wendell Phillips at Attucks Elementary. To sign up as a Captain or a worker go to cor.org/downtown/cio. If you have questions, please email or call Pastor Patrick at patrick.mclaughlin@cor.org or (816) 979-1330.
2nd Annual RezDowntown Blessing of the Animals – Saturday, September 24, 9-11 am at Washington Square Park. Feeling blessed? Your pet should too! Don’t miss out on bringing your pet, your memory of a pet, or just come to volunteer and help it all happen with the Blessing of the Animals at Washington Square Park (Pershing & Grand, across the street from Crown Center). We need volunteers to help with set-up and take-down as well as lots of pets and their owners! Your pet will receive a blessing and a small gift, and if you have a special pet you want to remember, we will have a blessing and a gift in their memory, too! For more information or to volunteer, contact Lea.Morrison@cor.org or visit cor.org/downtown/blesstheanimals.
RezDT 20/30 Game Night - Monday, September 19 at 6pm. Come out for a fun evening of sand volleyball at the new volleyball courts on the east end of Berkley Riverfront Park. Contact Audrey Thrasher (audreythrasher31@gmail.com) with questions.
Friendship on the Margins – Thursdays at 6:30pm, beginning September 22. Join Pastor Patrick as he leads this 6-week study which deals with the concept that in our anonymous and dehumanized world, the simple practice of friendship is radically countercultural. Sometimes Christians inadvertently marginalize and objectify the very ones they most want to serve. When we befriend those on the margins of society by practicing hospitality and welcome, we create communities where righteousness and justice can be lived out. The book for this study, Friendship on the Margins, by Christopher L. Heuertz and Christine D. Pohl may be purchased on line. Scholarships are available. For questions, contact Patrick.mclaughlin@cor.org. To register for this class go to cor.org/downtown/classes.
Men’s Campout! September 23-24. Join other guys for this amazing time of fellowship starting Friday, Sept. 23, at 1 pm with lunch, followed by an afternoon of hiking, fishing and target practice. Dinner is at 6:30 pm, followed by a spiritual lesson around the campfire. Stay the night and sleep under the stars on private land near Williamsburg, KS (about 1 hour south of RezDT). Enjoy breakfast together, more spirit-led discussion and be out by mid-day. Cash donations to help offset groceries will be collected in a free will donation at the event. For more information and to register, visit cor.org/downtown/menscampout or contact dan@starkravingsolutions.com.
Positive Parenting begins Sunday, September 25 at 10:30am. It’s a negative world and often a hard place to be positive, especially when parenting. Stress, jobs, activities and more make it difficult to raise our children in a positive way. Be a part of this 3-week study led by Justin Bastin, a licensed therapist, who will help you create strategies for raising your child or children in an uplifting fashion for both you and your child! Childcare will be available at the McGee building while you attend these classes at the Grand location. (Children’s programming will be available all morning for both 9am worship service and this 10:30am class.) For questions contact Justin Bastin as jbastin188@gmail.com. Registration is required, please go tocor.org/downtown/classes.
Nominations for Resurrection Committees seeking candidates to serve beginning in 2017: finance, trustees, staff parish relations, foundation, nominations and lay delegates to annual conference.
