The Deaf Devo from The Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States "Sweet Smell" Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 for Saturday, 12 November 2016
2 Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to God, who in the Messiah constantly leads us in a triumphal procession and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of what it means to know him! 15 For to God we are the aroma of the Messiah, both among those being saved and among those being lost;

On Wednesday nights I attend a Bible study at church. Before I enter the classroom where we meet, I already know if my friend Maria is there. How can I know that? As I am walking down the hallway or up the stairs to the room, I can smell Maria's perfume!
Today's Bible verses talk about a sweet-smelling perfume. "God uses us to spread his knowledge everywhere like a sweet-smelling perfume" (verse 14b). When we share the Good News about Jesus with others, it is like spraying some good-smelling perfume in a room.
But we can't buy this perfume in a store or order it online. This sweet smell comes from having a relationship with Jesus and being filled with the Holy Spirit. As we grow in Jesus, people will be able to see that He lives in us. Then they will want to know about Jesus and follow Him, too.
Share the Good News about Jesus and live for Him today![SQ]
"We loved you very much, so we were happy to share God's Good News with you. But not only that - we were also happy to share even our own lives with you."[1 Thessalonians 2:8]
PRAYER: God, thank You for the Good News about Jesus. In His name. Amen.

The Deaf Devo from The Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States "Proverbs (10)" Bible Reading: Proverbs 30:5 for Friday, 11 November 2016
Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God’s is pure;
he shields those taking refuge in him.
-------
If a bad storm or an angry dog frightened me when I was young, I would run to my safe place. My safe place was behind a big, red velvet chair in our living room. I would lean against the back of the chair and rub my face on the cloth. Then I would close my eyes and forget about what had frightened me.
I am an adult now. Most of the time, I am happy. But sometimes I become afraid. When I feel afraid, I can't hide behind a big, red velvet chair any more. Instead, I read my Bible and pray. I trust God's words to help me feel safe and secure. Proverbs 30:5 tells us, "You can trust this: Every word that God speaks is true. God is a safe place for those who go to him."
Maybe you are facing some frightening things in your life today. Maybe you want to feel safe and protected. Trust God to be with you, love you, and keep you safe![BR]
"God, hear my cry for help. Listen to my prayer. You are my place of safety, a strong tower that protects me from my enemies."[Psalm 61:1a, 3a]
PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, I know that You will surround me with Your love and protection today. Thank You! In Jesus' name. Amen.

The Deaf Devo from The Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States "Proverbs (9)" Bible Reading: Proverbs 20:24 for Thursday, 10 November 2016
Proverbs 20:24 A man’s steps are ordered by Adonai,
so how can a person understand his own ways?
-------
When I was young, my family and I traveled a lot by bus. We had to walk from our house to the bus stop to get on the bus.
As we went to the bus stop, we walked beside a creek. Sometimes my parents would stop and let me play in the creek. I would find bits of grass, paper and sticks and float them in the water. Often these bits would get caught on a stone and create a little dam. Then the water had to find a different way to continue flowing downstream.
Our Bible Reading today says, "The Lord guides our steps, and we never know where he will lead us." Sometimes the water flowing in the creek near my house had to turn and follow a different path. In the same way, God leads us to do different things in life. When we become old, we may look back on our lives and be amazed at how God has led us and blessed us.
Live how God wants you to live today. He will bless you and guide you to serve in His kingdom.[BR]
"Yes, you are my Rock and my protection.
For the good of your name, lead me and guide me."[Psalm 31:3]
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for Your blessings and for guiding me every day. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The Deaf Devo from The Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States "Proverbs (8" Bible Reading: Proverbs 19:16-29 for Wednesday, 9 November 2016
Proverbs 19:16 He who keeps a mitzvah keeps himself safe,
but he who doesn’t care how he lives will die.
17 He who is kind to the poor is lending to Adonai;
and he will repay him for his good deed.
18 Discipline your child while there is hope,
but don’t get so angry that you kill him!
19 A violent-tempered person will be punished;
if you try to save him from it, you make things worse.
20 Listen to advice, and accept discipline,
so that in the end you will be wise.
21 One can devise many plans in one’s mind,
but Adonai’s plan will prevail.
22 A man’s lust is his shame,
and a poor man is better than a liar.
23 The fear of Adonai leads to life;
one who has it is satisfied and rests untouched by evil.
24 The lazy person buries his hand in the dish
but doesn’t even bother to bring it to his mouth.
25 If you strike a scorner,
the simple will learn to act wisely;
if you reprove the intelligent,
he will understand what you mean.
26 One who mistreats his father and evicts his mother
is a son who brings them shame and disgrace.
27 My son, if you stop heeding discipline,
you will stray from the principles of knowledge.
28 A worthless witness mocks at justice,
and the mouth of the wicked swallows wrongdoing.
29 Judgments are in store for scorners
and blows for the backs of fools.

When I was a child, I held the map as my dad drove my family to our vacation destination. I would tell him to turn right or left to find the lake or our campsite. Dad trusted me to direct him to the best place for our vacation.
Just as I had a map that gave us directions to our campsite, God has a plan for each of us. We need to trust God to lead us according to His plan. Our Bible verses today give us advice on how we can follow God's plan. These verses talk about our relationship with Him and about our relationship with other people.
Proverbs 16:9 says, "People can plan what they want to do, but it is the Lord who guides their steps." It is important for us to make decisions about our families and our jobs. But it is more important that we trust God to lead us according to His plan.
Think about your life today. Are you depending on your own knowledge? Or are you depending on God to lead and protect you?[BR]
"People might make many
plans, but what the Lord says is
what will happen."[Proverbs 19:21]
PRAYER: Dear Lord, show me Your plan for my life and help me to depend on You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
