Greetings Torrey Pines Church,
I couldn’t be more excited about the trajectory of TPC. The spiritual growth and numerical growth are a wonderful confirmation of the decision to merge. One of the agreements we made in the merger was to add an elder from the pre-merger TPCC membership to the 2017-2019 EastLake Church Network Elder Board.
I’m very happy to let you know that Darren Klassen has agreed to serve as an elder over our network of churches. Please pray for the ELC Network Elder Board and the Staff at all our churches as we close out another year and launch into 2017. (and pray for the Oregon Ducks as we select a new football coach)
Merry Christmas,
Pastor Mike

ADVENT DAY 1 from Torrey Pines Church of Eastlake Church in La Jolla, California, United States "Advent Readings for Torrey Pines Church"
Welcome to Advent
In this series of e-mails you'll be getting from Torrey Pines Church over the next 25 days, we'll be giving you some prompts for a daily reading. They are intended, in the spirit of Advent, to help us identify with the ancient waiting of God's people for the coming of a Savior and for the coming Advent of Jesus' return. Our prayer is that they will encourage you as we all make an intentional lean towards Christmas as a community of faith.
DAY 1:
Day 1 is rare. Think about it. We really don't have a lot of firsts in life. You only get a first day on the job once. You only have one first day of being married. You'll have only one first day of college. There is only one first day as a parent, or as a licensed driver, or tasting sushi, or even a first night in a new place. They don't come every day. So when they do come, they're worth siezing. It's worth pausing and noticing the significance of it. It's why people say, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression". Firsts are significant.
Maybe this is not your first Advent. Maybe you've seen December 1 come and go 34 times and it's never meant that much. But today, this first can be a FIRST. This can be the first year you truly celebrated advent. It can be a first year you put stickers on a calendar, counted down the days, prayed with anticipation, read the Scriptures and waited for Christmas... for no other reason that you deeply yearn to intentionally do life with the God who is with us!
Listen to what the prophet Isaiah told God's people to anticipate...
Isaiah 11:1–5 (niv)
“Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. He will delight in obeying the Lord. He will never judge by appearance, false evidence, or hearsay. He will defend the poor and the exploited. He will rule against the wicked and destroy them with the breath of his mouth. He will be clothed with fairness and truth.”
A FEW QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:
As you count down the days to Christmas, what do you most yearn for from God?
Is there a character trait of the Messiah found in Isaiah's prophetic words that you want God to do in or through your own life?
What would happen if you began to pray for that over the next 24 days? "God, help me to _____ like Jesus did."
Save the date and invite your friends and family for a great celebration!
Christmas Eve services will be at 2, 4, and 6 pm on Saturday, December 24th!
