Welcome News
We got some big (and good!) news last month: President Trump announced his openness to adding sentencing reforms to the FIRST STEP Act. This is welcome news for the faith community, which has championed the need for proportional sentencing and a more constructive prison culture. You can read our reaction to the president’s comments here.
While this is hopeful news, the president has indicated that a vote on the legislation will wait until after the November elections. This will leave a very narrow window of time to achieve passage. We need your help to keep this issue a priority until the election and to get the FIRST STEP Act over the finish line. If you haven’t already, use our simple online tool to let your senators know you support the FIRST STEP Act!
Bring Justice Reform to Your State
The FIRST STEP Act would impact more than 180,000 federal prisoners, but did you know that there are a total of 2.2 million people incarcerated in America? Prison Fellowship is working to remember these prisoners and advance criminal justice reforms in 11 states this year through legislative action.
In Texas, Virginia, Tennessee, and Michigan, we’re ensuring that young people who commit crimes are met with punishment that reflects their unique capacity for change and keeps them close to home, church, and mentors. In other states—like Minnesota, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Louisiana—our advocacy team is partnering with policymakers to create second chance-opportunities for those who have paid their debts. But we can’t reach our targeted states alone.
You can help us bring justice reform to your state. Prison Fellowship’s Justice Ambassador program equips Christians to build relationships with lawmakers, publish letters-to-the-editor in local newspapers, host small group discussions on justice issues, and more. We need Justice Ambassadors in every state to advance reforms, but we especially need more applicants from our 11 target states, as highlighted in the map below:
