Explosive growth follows 2010 Haiti earthquake
Evangelism Coordinator Bernie Slingerland had no idea how God would work in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake devastated the country. Now, eight years later, the Nazarene population has exploded in Haiti, and a new district is being organized.
As Mesoamerica Evangelism Coordinator Bernie Slingerland surveyed the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, it was difficult for him to imagine how God could use His people to grow the church in Haiti.
Since then, the Church of the Nazarene went from planting no new churches to planting hundreds of new churches a year. Now, in the last three years, more than 1,000 new church plants have been established.
As a result, more than 10,000 people have accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior, and a new district has been organized in the country. This was made possible thanks to the JESUS film, countless volunteer missionaries, and many other church planting strategies.
Slingerland has led the revival in Haiti for the last 16 years, but he will be moving on to a new assignment this October.
"It's up to a new evangelism coordinator to continue facilitating the work in Haiti and beyond,” Slingerland said. “It's time for a Joshua to rise up and continue the work of regional evangelism in Mesoamerica." (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

Panama church encourages missions giving through yearlong emphasis
El Progreso Church of the Nazarene hosted a "missions party" with decorations and food from each country on the Mesoamerica Region to help raise $1,000 for Nazarene missions.
The Nazarene Missions International team at El Progreso Church of the Nazarene challenged the congregation to raise $1,000 for Nazarene missions between October 2017 and August 2018.
Leaders encouraged each Sunday School group to give toward the goal throughout the year and hosted a “missions party” on the final day of the initiative to raise the remaining funds.
Church members decorated the building with the colors and symbols of each country on the Mesoamerica Region and prepared traditional dishes.
After each group brought their offering forward, the attendees celebrated exceeding the $1,000 goal.
“What a blessed time,” said Ana María Crocker, NMI regional coordinator. “A person received Jesus as his personal savior [at the party], and many more came to the altar to pray for their health. [The World Evangelism Fund] continues supporting the missionary work of the Church of the Nazarene because local churches are faithful in giving, by grace, for that which they have received by grace.” (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

Pastor of largest Nazarene church in Philippines passes away
Angelito Agbuya, pastor of the largest Church of the Nazarene in the Philippines, passed away 4 September after serving the church 52 years. Agbuya was also an educator, college president, and district superintendent.

Angelito Agbuya, pastor of Angeles City Church of the Nazarene in the Philippines, passed away 4 September at the age of 67.
Throughout his life, Agbuya served the Church of the Nazarene in many capacities, including as a professor at Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary; president of Philippine Nazarene College(formerly Luzon Nazarene Bible College); founder and president of the Nazarene Academy, the first Nazarene K-12 school in the Philippines; superintendent of the Philippines Metropolitan Luzon District; and senior pastor of the largest church in the Philippines — Angeles City First Church — where he served for 52 years until his death.
Agbuya became the second pastor of the Angeles church after Ronald Beech, who pioneered the church in 1964 with the assistance of U.S. servicemen stationed at the nearby Clark Air Base. During Agbuya’s tenure, attendance exceeded 900 each week and 10 other congregations were planted.
While serving the Angeles City church, Agbuya was also a professor at APNTS. He began teaching in 1980 as part of a Nazarene Theological Seminary extension program held on the campus each January. In 1983, when APNTS commenced its own classes, Agbuya became a member of the founding faculty.
APNTS President Bruce Oldham recognized the impact Agbuya had on those around him.
"We at APNTS are mourning today the passing of Dr. Angelito Agbuya, who served the Angeles City Church for 52 years and was a founding faculty member [of APNTS],” Oldham said. “For me, he expressed the powerful reality of God’s work [as] a pastor and mentor for so many here in the Philippines. I, too, was honored to know him as a friend and an encourager. We pray for his family and his congregation during these days of grieving. His influence will continue in the lives of those he embraced and shared the love of Christ. His godly legacy as pastor and friend will live on among us all."
Agbuya served as superintendent of the Philippines Metropolitan Luzon District from 1997 to 2014. He also served as the president of Philippine Nazarene College in La Trinidad from 2005 to 2008.
Philippines-Micronesia Field Strategy Coordinator Stephen Gualberto thought highly of Agbuya.
“Rev. Dr. Angelito Agbuya dedicated his life to preaching the gospel, touching the lives of many in the Philippines,” Gualberto said. “It is bittersweet to hear of his homegoing this morning, as he will be missed, but we know he heard those words, ‘well done good and faithful servant.’ We mourn with and pray for his wife and children. May the Lord surround them with his love, peace, and comfort during this time of sorrow.”
In 2016, the Angeles City church presented Agbuya and his wife, Rose, with a Distinguished Service Award during its 53rd anniversary celebration.
Agbuya earned a Master of Arts, a Doctorate of Philosophy, and a Doctorate of Education.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Canieso; their four children, Ammie Rose Gates, Lemuel Agbuya, Faith Joy Agbuya, and Jeriel Agbuya; and five grandchildren.
A celebration of life was held 7 September at La Pieta Memorial Park in Angeles City, Philippines. (Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary via NCN News submissions)

Volunteers reach community, receive call to missions in Mexico
More than 15 people in Tuxtla Chico, Mexico, accepted Christ as their Savior after a group of volunteers served the community through Project Paul. Several of the team members felt a call to missions work during the project.

Nearly 20 volunteer missionaries served through Project Paul 5-12 August in Tuxtla Chico, Mexico.
The team served in the 15 de Abril, La Granja, San Joaquín, and Manuel Lazos communities, and throughout the week 17 people accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior, and 23 people agreed to receive a follow-up to hear more about a life in Christ.
“The Rains of Grace Church and its pastor, Pablo Zunun, will give a follow-up visit to those who asked for one,” said Andrea Margarita López Miguel, Global Missions coordinator for the Mexico Southern Border District. “The pastor and his wife, Xochitl Ramírez, are very happy and thankful to God, the district, and every person who prayed for this project.”
In addition to reaching many people in the city of Tuxtla Chico, several team members encountered God as well.
“During the project, many of the volunteers felt a call to serve the Lord through missions work,” Miguel said. “They committed to pray to go wherever God takes them.” (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
