“The Miracle of Change” - Read: Psalm 25: Prayer for Guidance and for
Deliverance
Of David.
1 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, in you I trust;
do not let me be put
to shame;
do not let my enemies
exult over me.
3 Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;
let them be ashamed
who are wantonly treacherous.
4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
teach me your paths.
5 Lead me in your truth, and teach me,
for you are the God of
my salvation;
for you I wait all day
long.
During this Advent time of waiting, for whom do we wait, and
what do we expect? I suspect that many of us, like those in Judea so long ago, are
waiting for God to wipe out oppression, poverty, disease, and hunger—in short,
to clean up this mess once and for all. And we expect it to be done in one fell
swoop, at the wave of a holy hand, when Jesus returns and finally puts
everything right.
If truth be told, though, we would prefer that God accomplish
this by changing the environment, the economy, the government, the one who hurt
us, the ones who failed us. We want Jesus to change our circumstances, but we
aren’t exactly eager for him to change us.
Yet the miracle in the manger initiated a change that began
simply, almost imperceptibly, in the smallest of ways, on the outskirts of
life. It continues today in my own life not as a single all-encompassing event,
but as a series of small, steady, even imperceptible changes. I am not who I
once was. I am being changed so that I can be God’s agent of change, so that
God is even now putting the world right, through me. And that’s a miracle.
Prayer: As we await the completion of your kingdom, O Lord, make
us to know your ways; teach us your paths. Change us, so that you might change
the world through us, and that you may be glorified through that miracle.(Nancy
