January 2014 “We're all Jacobs”
So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak...
Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but
Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have
overcome." (Genesis 32:24,28).
The journey of faith is not a straight, unbroken path. We all become Jacobs along the way; we all
mess up along the path. Jacob was the master
of the "mess up," cheating his brother not once, but twice.
But therein he gives us hope, because he comes to this point, as
we all do in time (kairos time) when we are alone with God and we wrestle with
God and we say, "Not my will but thy will be done." And then we're free, as free as Jacob
becoming Israel was free.
