First United Methodist Church’s Water Edge – Friday, 10 January
2014 – “Finding hope for the future”
When was the last time you've been to a wedding? Weddings are
wonderful celebrations with friends and family gathering, abundant food and a
party to go with it afterwards.
But the real joy of a wedding comes from seeing the bride and
groom look forward to the new life that is about to start. There is a sense of
excitement, anticipation of a shared life, and hope for a future.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus goes to a wedding where the wine
has run out. There Jesus performs his first miracle by turning water into wine.
We've all heard that story before. But the lesson to be learned is not the
miracle itself but the amount of wine that Jesus made - six stone jars holding
30 gallons each. Now that's a lot of wine!
Enough to liven up any party. Well, the life that we have in God is like
having that abundance of wine. It's cause for celebration and joy.
This Sunday we will be observing the Baptism of our Lord Sunday
as we remember our baptism. It is a time for us to recall that the life God
promises us is a life of abundance with hopes of looking into the future. Join
us this Sunday as we worship and thank God for the lives we share together.
Blessings,
Pastor Elbert

Interfaith Shelter at First Church
More volunteer opportunities - February 9 - 22
We'll be hosting the Interfaith Shelter Network here at First
Church from February 9 through 22. The Interfaith Shelter Network is a 27-year
old collaboration of 120 congregations in seven areas of San Diego, working
together to house homeless women, children, and men. Several of our rooms will
become "home" for 12 to 15 people who are working towards finding
permanent housing. We need many volunteers to help our guests feel welcome and
comfortable while they are here. Some of the ways you can help are by preparing
the evening meal or staying as an overnight host. Donations of sheets, pillows,
towels, and toiletries, as well as cash contributions would be greatly
appreciated. Come to the table on the patio on Sunday, January 12,
19, 26 and February 2 to sign up to volunteer or contact Brenda Blake at
619-297-4366 ext. 125 or Bblake@fumcsd.org.
W.E. Can
Don't forget to bring your cans on Sunday!
W.E. CAN
With recent budget cuts from the food stampsprogram; our food
ministry has become an even more important resource for hungry families. One of
the goals for the Water's Edge congregation this year is to support our First
Church Food Ministry: Loaves and Fishes. Besides canned food items, milk, eggs,
and bread are always welcome. You may leave your donations in The Cove, or in
Linder Hall.
Our service is modern and inter-generational with weekly
communion, open to everyone.
The band plays both current and traditional praise music, as
well as original Christian music.
