Great Plains Annual Conference Episcopal Area’s Weekly Update – Sunday, 5 January 2013 - Fire destroys First UMC, Syracuse, Neb.
A Boy Scout troup was about to meet at 6:30 p.m., at the Syracuse, Neb., UMC, when the leader arrived to the church about 6:20 and noticed the odor of smoke. The fire department was called about 6:29 p.m. The leader went next door to Pastor Gary Ganger who then walked through the basement of the church and the main floor to unlock doors for firefighters. At that time, Ganger did not see any flames but became aware the smoke was getting bad and vacated the church.
With sub-zero temperatures the fire was difficult to fight as trucks had technical issues along with the hampering temperatures making the water ice as soon as it hit surfaces.
A Lincoln television station featured the fire in its 10 p.m. newscast.
Photos by Kathryn Witte were taken between 9:20 and 10:20 and are posted on the Great Plains United Methodist Conference facebook page.
Church member Dottie Halvorson said a meeting will be held Wednesday evening at a yet to be determined time and location to evaluate next steps. Those wanting to add their names to a volunteer list should contact Prairie Rivers District Disaster Recovery Coordinator Lyn Seiser at 402-840-3464.
Pastor Ganger asks for prayers for the congregation and the community. The main part of the church was102 years old.
