January 2013 – "Beautiful Savior” ELW 838
1. Beautiful Savior,
King of creation,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I'd love thee,
truly I'd serve thee,
light of my soul, my joy, my crown.
2. Fair are the meadows,
fair are the woodlands,
robed in flow'rs of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer,
Jesus is purer,
he makes our sorrowing spirit sing.
3. Fair is the sunshine,
fair is the moonlight,
bright the sparkling stars on high;
Jesus shines brighter,
Jesus shines purer
than all the angels in the sky.
4. Beautiful Savior,
Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor,
praise, adoration,
now and forevermore be thine!
This is my favorite hymn. I learned it as a child with my
grandma playing on the piano. I remember singing it with my Mom and Dad as we
traveled in the car and also singing it with my head resting on my Dad's
shoulders during worship. I will always remember singing it at St. Olaf College
and singing it as I rocked my children to sleep. We sang it at both of my
parents' funerals and I want it sung at mine someday. It is a beautiful song of
praise to Jesus our Savior, who shines in our lives with radiance and joy. It
speaks of a deep desire to love and serve this beautiful Savior. The older I am
the more one of the lines especially stands out: "He makes our sorrowing
spirit sing." Oh, it is so true!
Beautiful Savior, truly I’d love Thee, truly I’d serve Thee,
Light of my soul, my joy, my crown. May we sing a song of praise to you all the
days of our lives. Amen.
